When you mentioned her shrieking fits, her insistance she was damned, and the alternating between these states and near catatonia, I immediately thought "bipolar". It runs in families, can be triggered by stress, and tends to get worse with age. High anxiety is often comorbid, and even during normal periods, the sufferer tends to be emotionally sensitive (not unstable, just feels things strongly). We have this in our family. My sympathies to the poor woman and her family, long dead though they might be.

These time "induced" mental illnesses scare me more than the thought of death.. Right out of high school, I worked in a geropsych unit as a security guard. There was a constant cycle of new patients on holds and for diagnosis.. it broke my heart to see these poor people battling between being completely gone and holding onto bad experiences from their pasts.

I think that is a good possibility, but having worked briefly in psychiatry (switched specialties), it can be tricky. Just like many infectious diseases have similar symptoms (dozens of illnesses with symptoms of fatigue, fever/chills, headache, sore throat, runny nose, maybe a rash, etc), many neuropsych disorders have very similar symptoms as well. Depression/mania could be a number of things, including thyroid disorders or just the extremes of grief after the deaths of her husband and kids, with people trying either to distract themselves frantically with “fun” or secret substance use, or in darkest grieving and it seems she developed dementia later (by her 70s).

@@Itried20takennames Her appearance does not support thyroid issues nor substance use. The relatively late onset is not typical of bipolar disorder. Anyways, the family history is and the loss of her husband must have hurt her a lot. Having worked in psychiatry for 30 years and specialty in severe illnesses, like schizophrenia and bipolar. Had she not been made to marry her uncle, her offspring would have hopefully been stronger and she would have suffered less stressful events.

Portuguese princess were forced to give up their rights to the throne to marry a foreign prince and she couldn't do it as the heiress to the throne, but she couldn't marry anyone that was less than royal, so her uncle was the only groom possible. I wish she had a better life and better help to her distress ... A life of tragedy and misery 🥺 Thank you for honoring her with such great video ❤

Insanity was once kept very secret in families, because no one wanted to marry someone who might taint their children, and it is possible just like other physical conditions. Her father's illness brought on by the earthquake, might have been a foreshadowing. It's not perfect, but we can help people who have mental illness. Through therapy and medication, most live normal lives. I sincerely thank God for our progress

Marriage for the upper classes was about acquiring more status, property & money by joining two families thru marriage . It wasn't about love . Girls married young, but back then, life expectancy was 55-56 at best.

It was not about life expectancy it was about ignorance. Religion brutalizes people. Makes them subject to superstitions like monarchy and misogynist traditions. It never had to be that way by necessity it's just that religious zealotry is stubborn.

They were married off young, but they weren’t stupid. Consummation, regardless of age, wasn’t even expected until the woman was about 18; any younger and they’d risk losing her and the potential heir during or shortly after childbirth. And cases of a young woman marrying an older man were also rare. Why? Because the odds were high that he’d die long before she would. And we already knew how people thought of women ruling them. The incest though? That was legitimately based on ignorance and the desire to keep power as close to the family as possible.

Being forced to marry her father’s brother and having sex with him no doubt might have traumatized her plus postpartum depression and the deaths of her children, the Lisbon earthquake could all have contributed to her suffering. Plus the restrictive clothing in humidity and heat would have made men weak if they had been forced to wear what women had to. Have noted that anything to do with Portugal is always narrated by men, never by Portuguese women. Makes me suspicious of the ‘history.’ What is needed is a balanced views from others not just from Portuguese ‘historians.’

I enjoyed that historical royal piece. A lot of tragedies crippled her, all those babies dying in infancy, and then the inbreeding didn't help. When it was noted and told of her shrieking and crying a lot, your heart really would go out to her. Her father the King being so unsettled by the tsunami, he had to move, struck a chord with me. The big Tsunami that happened Christmas 2004, over in the Indian Ocean, I'll never forget although I live thousands of miles away, I can just imagine the devastation of such a geographical and forceful event. She was half Spanish so no wonder she went mad, but seriously who knows what they meant by mad. Did this mean that she suffered from clinical depression, bipolar, post-traumatic stress due to the earthquake? Who really knows because with misogyny and the patriarchal system will exaggerate or even outright lie. Maria didn’t marry a cousin she married her father’s brother which is incest. Incest has always been taboo even back then. Yes marrying cousins was normal back then but not uncles and aunts or siblings which happened in Ancient Egyptian Royals and Hawaiian Royalty. In Europe hemophilia is common due to all the inter-marriages.

Very true, but her parents were second cousins and both were descended from the Austrian and Spanish Habsburgs. Maria's paternal grandmother was a Habsburg, Maria Anna of Austria as was her maternal great-great grandmother, Maria Theresa of Spain; Louis XIV's wife. Her uncle and grandfather also had melancholia and sever depression at the end of their lives. She was not incestuous, but her ancestry was; being descended from the Habsburg dynasty certainly didn't help.

Maria's life was a fascinating life. That poor woman and what she went through, but the medical, not to mention the mental, help was not available. I don't know as much about the Portuguese Royal as I do Spain and that not very much. I do know of the Habsburgs and their many, many incestuous marriages. I thought of Juana the Mad, older sister of Katarina of Aragon, while watching this. I would like to see a video of Joan of Arc. I have wondered if Joan may have had mental issues as well, possibly, schizophrenia? However, I am not arguing that she did indeed hear angelic voices. There are things that just cannot be explained. Thank you again for your informative and concise historical lesson today.

Ancient Egypt’s pharaohs had generation after generation of very ill and defected kids.. In real life, King Tut’s body was an absolute mess. That gold death mask of his is what he WISHED he looked like. Movies always portray him as a good looking warrior type. He absolutely was NOT!…

I learned from the family genealogist that I am a descendant of that family, too. Actually, the line that runs through the marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. I don't think I should dust off the old tiara (I WISH I had one) right away, as I'm waaaaay down the line of those having a claim to the throne. You mentioned something that... Let's put it nicely, teachers avoid the topic altogether at schools in Portugal. To us, she's recalled not as "the mad" that often but as "mother of people", "the pious one". Only recently did they started to mention her mental issues, only briefly,at more advanced levels of History class. I'm 33, and when I went to school there was no mention whatsoever. That's a good reason why I love to watch History material from a foreigner point of view. "History is written by the victorious". But every country has a different perspective on one same event. On one character.

Portugal held its colonies of Goa, in India, and Guiné, Cape Verde, São Tomé e Príncipe, Angola and Mozambique, these all in Africa, until the second half of the 20th century. In the 19th century, after Portugal being the first nation in the world to abolish slavery, our then king and Maria I eldest grandson, Pedro IV, declared Brasil independent, gave up the Portuguese throne to his daughter, Maria II, and became the emperor of Brasil (where slavery was still allowed like in everywhere else besides Portugal at the time). What most likely drove Maria I to her "madness" were the traumatic losses she endured, especially that of the infante Dom José. She even built a cathedral where she had the Prince's body embalmed and in a display coffin so she could visit him every day. It's still there.

I used to hear stories about my family who hailed from the Azores and of an "incest castle" and supposed "royalty". I still don't believe it. But this sheds SoME kind of light on our family history back over there. They migrated back in the early 1900s. I would love to know more. But I can't seem to find much info on the island was said for us to be from. I just know it was a castle, in the Azores on an island that started with an f

Yes, she was a very distant descendant of Juana. She was descended from the Spanish and Austrian Habsburgs on both her maternal and paternal sides. This is also probably where her mental illness came from, as many of her family members had been inflicted with melancholia and depression. Not to mention that all the inbreeding the kingdoms of the Iberian peninsula and the Habsburg dysnasty did. Maria most likely suffered from depression and schizophrenia or bipolar disorder and eventually dementia.

There was a time in wich it was sort of "normal" among the royales to marry cousins, uncles an so on. Just look at Elizabeth 11 and Phillip, his Mother was Victoria's grandaughther and Elizabeth's father was thé grandson of Victoria's also. Im not saying this to be mean towards them.

True , she might have been a victim of Bipolar Disorder swinging between mania and depression . A pubertal affliction due to hormonal interplay mainly epinephrine , serotonin . The trigger could be genetic as she had mental illness in the family . Normally bipolars don't have impact on longevity and they are intelligent people . But in manic stages they develop the feeling that they are the best and a sense of grandeur and arrogance . This is the time they take sudden ,rash , risky decision and become aggressive , dogmatic , ruthless , for instance ,she removed the competent Minister because she only thought it to be right . Since at that time such illnesses had no medication her mental health declined . There is no cure but there is Lithium Carbonate treatment that one has to have for life . One other thing is bipolar hits during puberty and most turn sexually aggressive so much so that they can have multiple partners as the urge gets unbearably strong as they age . Not sure Maria had gone through this experience but the fact that she was not choosy and married a 42 year old at the age of 25 and produced 7 children of which 4 died is an indication that she had strong urge to mate . Having said that she did not have menstrual cycle disorder with severe cramp developed due to short cycles and resultant primary or secondary amenorrhea is an indication that she was suffering from hypo mania rather than typical bipolar disorder . Interesting life of a Queen never the less largely successful in her governance and as a hypo manic you can still be a competent individual of authority .

I know it was considered normal back then for family members to marry each-other but I have always found it disgusting when much older men marry young girls. I love my uncle, but the thought of marrying him makes me feel sick, so I can't imagine what the poor girls must have felt, especially if they had to travel to a completely different country.

The royals thought incest was ok because the gods some of them were into worshipping were always doing incest and then looking out for humans as concubines. They thought of themselves as apart of the gods bloodline and still do to this day.

@@NannupTiger Im talking about all the royals. They may have stemmed it out a bit and switched to their 8 or 10th cousins. But if you look at their genealogy it still looks pretty much like incest. I feel like them searching for people related to them for marriage and breeding is still a form of incest. It just is a smarter way in avoiding deformation and disease. Plus it also gives a illusion off to dumb people that anybody can marry into royalty in modern day.

@@NannupTiger Being from different countries doesn’t mean anything. They spread to all countries as a form of control. A different last name and language means nothing. It’s a bloodline system stemming back hundreds of years. They all are cousins. I repeat they do not let outsiders in. Apparently you have never done extensive research on the Illuminati bloodlines. The royals are on top of the pyramid system. The only ones greater then them is The Beast system and Satan and the fallen angels. Why would they let a commoner or useless eater as they call the public into their family?
