Thank you for this; a remarkable lady. Portrayed on screen by Anne Bancroft in 'Young Winston'. The series 'jennie', in which she was portrayed by Lee Remick, covers many of the events you describe. I knew nothing of the term 'dollar princess' until I watched your video.

Looking at Winston’s Childhood life via his mother’s life is very enlightening. I’ve only ever seen him in my mind as the Prime Minister of the UK. Sometimes it’s hard to keep in mind that all historical figures were once just children at one point. I cannot imagine Healthcare falling down the stairs, Breaking your ankle could lead to infection and a untimely death. Thank you as Always for your research and delightful content.

To add some background to this sort of story one should read Edith Wharton's novel the "Buchaneers" which is about a group of wealthy American young women who go to Britain determined to "land" a titled scion of the English nobility who can add class and legitimacy to the millions their fathers earned in the golden age of the American "robber barons."There was a wonderful TV series too based on the novel.I probably have the spelling wrong as Google is telling me the spelling is wrong no matter how I write the word!But then Google spelling is very narrowly American!

@trj1442 Jenni did have a fall. Her (horrible) sister- in-law tripped her! She (SIL) was jealous of Jennie's and Randolph's happiness and she resented that her husband (Randolph's older brother) as well as his parents liked Jennie too. Randolph's older brother divorced his wife right after their father died. It was Randolph's nephew (and Winston's cousin) who married Consuelo Vanderbilt.

Her father was the namesake of Jerome, Arizona... my personal favorite "ghost town." He actually never visited the town, or mines, but made a lot of money from the copper mined there. Due to the connection, I've always been fascinated with Jennie and afterwards the other Dollar Princesses. I do wonder about what the state of Blenheim Palace would be today without the Jerome money.

@here_we_go_again2571 well, gotta keep those heiresses in the family. I always found it funny that they named Jerome for E. yet he never went there once... 😂 I have to admit that when it comes to historic places to save, Blenheim Palace has been well worth the spending.

@@thescarletgraywitch8052 Blenheim was probably worth saving. Blenheim was saved by Vanderbilt money. (It did not have indoor plumbing until after the Duke's marriage to Consuelo) Jennie's $5 million may or may not have helped keep it limping on to some degree. The lion's share of Jennie's fortune was spent by Randolph and Jennie.

Most people in the era prior to the Industrial Revolution had arranged marriages with a dowery and a contract. The idle rich could afford to have illegitimate "mishaps" after marriage. So long as the wife provided an heir or two whose fatherhood was not questioned; most of those *upper-class* women *so long as they were discrete* could do as they pleased. Not everyone in the upper classes played musical beds but it was not that uncommon. By contrast, the Middle classes were very disapproving of such behavior for the woman (but ignored it by the man)
@MegCazalet

She wasn’t Lady Jennie Churchill, she was Lady Randolph Churchill, as the video later acknowledged. She married the younger son of a Duke, so there was no personal title for her to gain. She would be more properly called “Lady Randolph Churchill, née Jennie Jerome”. Casually she would be called “Lady Randolph”.

As much as I love your accent, while listening I was confused for a minute until I realized you were saying "Boer" war and not "World" war in most instances. But the Boer Wars are not much on Americans' radar, and that may be a problem, too. When I was in my early twenties I saw the graves of Boer prisoners of war in Bermuda, where England sent them. Later I learned that in Bermuda, a spiritual awakening occurred amongst those prisoners of war, and I wondered if my hosts had shown us the cemetery because that site had more than simply military significance.
