Kubota was a fan of anime since he was a child, drawing flipbooks in class, including a lot of Dragon Ball in middle school. (collège = middle school (age 10-14, four years (6th, 7th, 8th and 9th grades for US) At the age of 11 he decided to become an animator. Besides Dragon Ball, he was also a fan of works like Macross Plus, Evangelion, Ah! My goddess, which influenced his drawing. He worked on many projects but he is particularly proud to have worked on Space Dandy and One Punch-Man, there was a very competent staff on it, qualifying them as "Top class". For the last episode of Space Dandy, Kubota was quite sad to leave all this group but Shingo Natsume offered him to be a character designer of his next project (One Punch Man). Concerning Dragon Ball Super Broly, he had been a gengaman on it, he asked Hayashida (the producer) during the otsukare (party to celebrate the end of the production) to entrust him one day a character design of Dragon Ball, because he considered himself as the most fan of the franchise in the animation staff. There was not to be a 2D scene planned (for DBSSH). Kubota said as a condition of his participation in the project, to put some 2D in. Toriyama's line is something quite difficult to put in volume. This is one of the difficulties that Kubota had during the making of the film. He had to get a lot of things corrected, he had to look at each of the cuts one by one, manually correct them, and send them back to the 3D staff for corrections. It took him a lot of time, in addition to drawing the 2D part himself. The deadline was coming, and he felt the deadline pressure but TOEI Animation was hacked so he was somehow lucky to have had 2 more months to polish things for the movie. His next project is an original animation movie, he hopes his son will be able to see it. (Von's note: I don't know exactly why he wishes his son will be able to see it; either he's sick, or it's going to be so long he might die of old age, or he hopes it'll be age-appropriate? idk) Unfortunately, he never met Akira Toriyama. Toriyama had met the main staff of DBS Broly but as it was post-covid for DBSSH, it didn't happen for them. In 2D, the pencil is more expressive, Kubota explains you can more easily draw emotions. He doesn't really understand power level differences in Dragon Ball, his job is to make them look powerful on the screen. (Von's note: I would say he means what we say in English as "powerscaling", so I would venture and say he was not thinking about MUI or UE and how Piccolo and Gohan compared to them) When he was first told about DBSSH, he thought it was a shame that it was in 3D, that's why he insisted on a 2D part. (Von's note: "it's a shame it's 3D" is a STRONG sentiment to express imho, especially with Japanese employee culture. Kubota is extremely confident and assertive of his beliefs, I believe this is much more meaningful than we expect. Especially as a freelancer) Before he was passionate about Dragon Ball, he used to draw Doraemon or Per-man. He had a friend, Tatsumi, who drew GeGeGe no Kitarô better than him, and if he progressed it's because he wanted to become better than him. The production of DBSSH lasted one and a half years. (For comparison) The first episode of One Punch Man took 6 months and the last one took 6 weeks. He already talked with Hayashida that if there is ever a remake of Dragon Ball, you should definitely call him. The 2D part of the movie is for him a portfolio to motivate them to do it. Added from another attendee: "There's no current anime project for Dragon Ball, because if there was, he (Kubota) would put every other project on the back burner to work on it" (his other projects being that he is/was on the 3rd season of One Punch Man)

I think what a lot of people actually don't realize is that a lot of the frames and scenes in Super Hero are actually in fact gone over again with 2D alterations and 2D art in combination with 3D characters and assets. The movie is not 100% pure 3D and there are many times where if you pause and actually look at the scene and characters, you can see the 2D alterations, touch-ups, and inclusion. One of the biggest examples is when after Gamma 2 punches Orange Piccolo and Orange Piccolo is just looking down at him menacingly.

A slight correction for Kai. It temporarily ended with 97 episodes for the pre-Buu arc instead of planned 98, due to news covering the tsunami that struck Japan. The episode 98 was released direct to video. It did return in 2014 for the final chapters. I'm glad that you pointed out how a Dragon Ball remake will probably contain alterations... which will without a doubt become controversial within the fanbase. Oddly despite the fact that Dragon Ball's story has potential for being better written(as due to Toriyama writing as he went, left alot of narrative abd consistency weakness ) most of his and toeis backtracking and retconing of the original story has only made it worse/makes no sense/removed strengths in my opinion and I'd rather not have them go back and toy with the original, aka the last piece storytelling that most fanbase values the highest unanimously.

And regarding a full on Dragon Ball reboot, Toei has already gone that route with some of their other shows like Saint Seiya, Kitaro (multiple times to boot), Digimon, Sailor Moon and especially Dr Slump back when GT ended. And while none have reached the popularity and relevance of their respective originals, I don't see DB being in a similar situation given how it's literally the most successful anime IP. Plus, i love Kikuchi's music to death, og DB without his music would just feel wrong lol

There is a very valid reason to remake all of DB and Z but people aren't going to like it, its kids. DBS was and still is a huge hit with kids but most of them didn't even bother with Kai and only know the original series from clips on KZbin or pirate sites, TV channels and most streaming services don't want to touch OG DB because of the raunchy humor. Mind you the kids that grew up with DBS are already into their teens, DBS will keep going but eventually they have to make the old content more approachable.

You have to consider that probably 80% of Dragon ball super audience globally, especially the younger ones, that might be the majority, did not watch Dragon Ball, and is such a masterpiece, that it really should be remade, with less "roshi moments" probably, let's see where it goes.

With Toei's size and DB's reputation, they could v. easily make movie quality episodes, but this would require them to produce the product long before its actual debut, dedicate a lot of time to it, and air it yearly rather than concurrently. Toei, a toy company at this point, isn't gonna do that lmao. It'd be pretty dope tho. Kikuchi wasn't the greatest fit for Z, Faulconer was p. bad as well outside of a few tracks, so the only loss would be Kikuchi for DB, but that's not to say it couldn't be better. Better composers, newer VAs, and so on. Given the time and effort it needs, and could easily get because of how massive it is, it would be the definitive way to experience DB, but it won't ever happen because $$$. Sure it'll see a lot of success, but JP companies -- and most companies, really -- are p. silly when it comes to future profits. Joe Schmoe will you tell you that it'd print money and he'd be right, but Toei wouldn't be getting an immediate profit, so it's a wild card and, thus, a potential waste of money. Gotta make billions, not millions. Fun video, though. I like these discussion pieces. Also, you probably said "Z Kai" because that's what the west -- or America at least -- changed it to lol

Kubota’s words on dragon ball for me just makes it all the more frustrating that fans (especially a certain creator) will constantly bad mouth those behind the scenes. And all though I would love a remake of dragon ball to Z I think it should be like what perroit did with road of naruto, a compilation of iconic moments from the series redone with new animation technology with a remixed soundtrack.

The style they choose is one thing but the colors are so detrimental to the tone of Dragon Ball. Animation is Animation! It’s all a form of artistic expression and it’s all really difficult, in every medium. People acting like studios are losing 2D animators because 3D is easier and cheaper. Not the case, in fact, there is so much demand for animators in Japan, and so much anime in production all at once. It’s just a different group of artists making a different take on a franchise. Gatekeeping a medium from an IP just because it’s not what we’re used to is not in the right spirit for me. If it ends up bad, then yes, we can call it bad. But at least it had the opportunity, all mediums should at least be giving the freedom to explore different styles and forms of expression, otherwise animation would all look the same.

HELL YEAH I WANT A REMAKE!!! I don’t care how much they change if it looks like what they did in Super Hero! I believe that any changes they make to the characters or the story would be for the better and give us something fresh for returning fans! If you’re so concerned about drastic changes and enjoy the old, well its still there… just watch the classic stuff then? Id be doing backflips for a new Z Thats looks as good as the opening recap of Super Hero. Of course tho I would only want to see it if they take the time to make it exactly as advertised. Otherwise if it’s truly not realistic for that same level of movie quality I would rather them not try at all.

Although you would get a more animated series, it would never be movie quality the whole way through. It's impossible on a weekly schedule, although going seasonal (which I doubt they would do) would certainly help bump up the quality. And that part near the end wasn't so much my concerns, but more so just me pointing out that a remake would bring a lot more changes than I think many fans expect.

Imo, rather than REMAKE the series, they should just recut/repackge it. I think, especially for newer fans, the viewing order is weird and intimidating, even without the question of which dub to watch. Toei should essentially give OG Dragon Ball the Kai treatment to omit the filler then air/release it followed by Kai (but including History of Trunks) and finally a recut of Super that excludes the filler and perhaps also incorporates all the movies from Battle of Gods onwards in place of the first 2 arcs of Super. Do that and package it as ONE definitive series under a single title (I dunno, Dragon Ball Alpha or something). In other words Raditz arriving on Earth wouldn't be Episode 1 of DBZ or Kai it would just be the ACTUAL next episode after Goku beats Piccolo and Beerus' introduction wouldn't be Movie 14 or Super Ep1 it'd just be the episode immediatey after the defeat of Kid Buu. Then, once they catch up with the Super era they can simply continue with new material. Instead of complicated lists informing fans which series/version to watch and in what order, you just have a HD rendition of everything packaged in one anime that you can just begin at episode 1 with and follow linearly

I think Toriyama is correct when saying that Goku being a righteous hero was always the wrong idea. He is just a guy who likes fighting and loves his world and those around him. His philosophical outlook doesn't go deeper than that. Hence why Goku let Vegeta escape or gave Cell the senzu bean. That's also the same reason Goku is a bad father. Goku is NOT righteous and any portrayal of him being so is incorrect. I think the Hope of the Universe Speech against Freeza was the start of the incorrect path for Goku. Toriyama is at fault for this as well and no doubt would probably change things up in a remake.

I know we've seen a ''kind of Teen Goku'' in the 23rd Budokai but he's already too tall to be compared to teen Gohan, not to say that this ''Teen'' Goku is older than Ultimate Gohan that fough Super Buu. No matter what, height in Dragon ball makes less sense than power levels anyway.
