Forgotten Shine Restoration

The old rusty pulley from an old barn does not have many parts, so disassembly was straightforward. In this project I have had to make several bolts new on the lathe, welding, paint spreading, sandblasting, grinding and then some. Please also note that this video is not just to quickly show someone how something works, but also to relax and unwind from the daily grind!
------------------------------------------------------------
▶ What did I do ?! ◀
To disassemble the antique idler pulley it was enough to pull two bolts and disassemble the plain bearing to hold all the parts in my hand. After washing them off in water, I sandblasted all the parts in the sandblasting cabinet. After removing burrs and imperfections, the major components could be painted with rust preventative paint. The bolt, on the old pulley had to be replaced because the old one had too much play in the fit. The bracket, including the bolt that holds the idler pulley, also had to be rebuilt. After all parts were reassembled, the bolt could be filled with grease. As a small detail, the letters were colored to match the pulley.
------------------------------------------------------------
▶ Good to know ◀
I used the following tools: Water pump pliers, pin punch, hammer, dishwasher liquid, brush, screwdriver, wire brush, compressor, sandblasting cabinet, abrasive corundum, key file, metal rust preventive paint, paint brush, lathe, lathe chisel, center drill, drill, cordless screwdriver, saw, tap, center punch, caliper, countersink, polishing machine, polishing paste, multifunctional tool, scriber, parallel scriber, stop angle, angle grinder, welding machine, welding helmet, adhesive tape, lubricating grease

Turtle's digusted face while looking at the old grease was just classic! The pulley came out wonderfully, and now i am thinking of Hogan's Heroes (Hochstetter). 😊 Such a wonderful job on the old pulley. I hope it has many good years left.

Not poop, but it may have been a pulley wheel with either a leather or rubber bedding to make the wheel less noisey.
@Dave_en
@Dave_en Жыл бұрын
I think its leather or rubber gasket for smooth noise free operation. It's purpose may be to prevent wearing off the pulley and its replaceable component. The leather rotted and appeared to be poop.😂😂😂

Nice save of that pulley system. And the colors look good too. One suggest, if you have the space, install a backup washer before installing the cotter pins. That way if, or when, the cotter pins spin, it won't scratch up the finish. Thumbs Up!

I have two theories as to what that stuff caked in the pulley was: 1. It's manure/dirt from lying on a barn floor for many years 2. It's the disintegrated remains of the rope that use to go around it
@ForgottenShineRestoration
@ForgottenShineRestoration Жыл бұрын
I suspect the rope was pulled on the floor (full of poo) and then transported into the pulley...🐢
@vathraq2727
@vathraq2727 Жыл бұрын
I see a similar effect in my work. The pulley starts making noise. They put a lubricant. In this case probably grease. The grease, because it's wet, gathers dirt and dust particles causing it to cake up and dry. Then you have scrape it off to clean the pulley.
@kumar_ankit28
@kumar_ankit28 Жыл бұрын
That's not a poop IMO. It must be some rubber type thing over a pulley so that the rope is easily pulled without being friction with frame. Rope gets a grip and pull things easily. BDW Amazing work.
