I was at a pistol range in the 1970s and though I didn't see this caliber being fired; a man was shooting an 8.15 mm Mauser pistol. Only in SMGs; the Swiss & Hungarians did several & Italy did a rare prototype--Armaguerra OM42. European armies didn't like really powerful calibers for their service pistols. 9mm Mauser *_Export_* was meant for the S.American & colonial Africa/Asia markets. Also, European civilians didn't like big, hip-carried pistols. A nice "What-If" would be the FN Grand Browning (a 7/8th size copy of the Colt1911) actually reaching production. It was originally chambered in 9.65mm Browning (slightly better than 38ACP), but it wouldn't take much tooling to make it shoot 9X25. Given the Mauser's ballistics are a rough match to 38Super, the Grand Browning would have handled it just fine.

Germany was not a big user of the 9x25mm Mauser Export cartridge, but no less than four German companies (DWM, Gustav Genschow, Geco, RWS) made tons of this ammo in the late '30s and early '40s. It was produced in Austria, Hungary and Greece too. Apparently the Axis gave Greek security forces a bunch of MP34s in this caliber. It was also made commercially - I am assuming for the few C96s in this chambering - by Kynoch (UK), SFM (France) and Fiocchi (Italy) through the 50s/early 60s. The John Moss article in the IAA Journal has great info on this including illustrations of all the headstamps.

Have loved the C96 since I was a kid reading comics like Agent Corrigan, Modesty Blaise, Johnny Hazzard, The Phantom and so on. There were a few guns that occurred time and time again in these. Guns such as the 1911 and Browning Hi-Power were usually "hero" guns, while German and Chinese villain's tended to use Luger (often also called Parabellum) or Mauser C96, usually called "broom handle". Most of the time it was hard to see any difference between the automatic pistols in these series, except for the Luger and the Mauser, those were easy to distinguish and especially the Mauser looked so radically different it was easy to fixate on it. Things like calibers and ballistic performance weren't a big thing in these comics so to a kid it was all about visual impact, and both the Luger and the Mauser had that in spades.

@@flightlesschicken7769 lol,are you serious bro?What did you smoke to even suggest that?O_o Neither the luger with it's laughably short barrel and reliability below any reasonable level even for it's time and range of effective fire like 20 yards maximum plus 8rd magazine nor the 1911 with it's bullet slower than a rock that you throw and 7 rocks..Okay,"rounds" in it's magazine both just aren't even close to the performance of C-96!FFS you have 320 meters per second with a 8.1 gram bullet at the muzzle for luger and 450 meters per second with the same bullet in a 9×25 Mauser C-96 that holds 10 or optionally 20 rounds:dude!Where is the luger better here?It sucks!

@@johnsheppard1476 Yes, the schnellfeuer with a stock and long barrel was a pretty viable first generation SMG, though its cost of manjfacture was higher than reasonable.
@johnsheppard14763 жыл бұрын
@@ineednochannelyoutube5384 although in Schnellfeuer they unfortunately didn't solve the problem with the rate of fire exceeding 1200 rounds per minute so I doubt that basically any full auto handgun is going to have any practical advantages due to their very high RPM..Yet back to C-96 it's a great gun anyway just because of it's superior accuracy and power so I really completely understand some people who choose C-96 as their EDC even today!It's still one of the best auto loaders currently existing on the market and won't be a bad choice even in 2021!

The Mauser and single action army always make me think of Metal Gear Solid 3. Eva uses a Chinese Mauser C96 on full auto, and uses the technique where you hold the gun sideways and let the recoil sweep your aim in an arc. Ocelot uses various SAA's in the game, including an SAA with a stock at one point. The main character, Snake, gives Ocelot crap for having a SAA with engravings at one point (which always makes me chuckle). The creator of MGS3 is a gun nut, and he put a lot of gun nerd info into the game. My great grandpa owned a 1911A1 that had the same modifications described in the game, with the exception of keeping the normal grips. He machined his own barrel busing that was extremely well fit, increased the barrel length by 1 inch, and polished the feed ramp to a mirror finish. I inherited the gun, and it always makes me think of MGS3. Eventually i will get a SAA and Mauser to complete my collection. For those curious, the 1911A1 was issued, and its serial number puts it in the last batch of 1911's manufactured for use in WWII. It was used in germany and made its back to the US.

I have converted a number of 9x19 Tokarev barrels to 9x23 Win. As I have Star Super B pistols from 9x19 to 9x23. My C96 Mauser in 7.63, I bought to prove it could take loads that blow up a CZ52. Unfortunately, my C96 has a poor firing pin to firing pin hole fit, and pierces primer right at the blow up load for CZ52. And piercing primers just makes the fit worse. I paid $180 for my C96 in 2003, and any part of fixing it up would cost more than that.

If you needed 9x25 cases you could fire form them by firing 7.63x25 ammo out of the 9mm pistol though it probably wouldn't be good with such a rare item.

@3:27 - *"By developing both cartridges to have effectively the exact same muzzle velocity, that means they have the same drop..."* I'm not good at math, but if the 7.63 is smaller, was it's *mass* the same as the 9mm? I'm missing the part where two objects, with different masses, start at the same energy and velocity, and continue to follow the same ballistic path... I think (with a lot of confidence) - that I am missing a chunk of the ballistics equation. Can someone explain to me where I'm wonky?
