We have previously looked at the original MP-18, the System Schmeisser improvement, and the followup MP-28,II design on the table - but we have not taken the MP-28 out to the range. So, that's what we are doing today - how does it compare to its Schmeisser-magazine predecessor?

Bill, it's always a bigger kick, IMHO, when it's a piece of history like this that you get to pick up and shoot.... As opposed to a replica..... I've fired 5 or 6 different reproduction 1873 Sharps rifles, and they were fun to shoot but none of them could compare to the actual 1873 Sharps that was made in 1882 that I was allowed to fire..... One that had actually been out on the prairie of America in the 1880's and probably dropped a Buffalo or 2 on the way across America to feed a wagon train.... The same with the 1873 trap door Springfield I owned that traced back to to 1883 US ARMY Infentry with it's bayonet and broken shell extractor.... Lord only knows the miles some soldier may have carted that rifle through history..... Or the M1 Garand I had that was a CMP Rebuild from Korea that was lost in combat and bought back, and rebarreled to shoot again.... I could have put a new stock on it, instead of the split and pinned back together original.... But what pages of history would be lost in doing that❓🤔❓🇺🇲 That's why the MP5SD SMG that I shot was the finest SMG I ever used, but didn't give me near the chills that I felt when I got to fire an original 1928 Thompson with the vertical grip, the Cutts Compensater, and the 50 round drum..... The MP5 was a vastly superior weapon..... But I still got a bigger kick (pun) out of the Tommy gun..... That's why I feel Ian has the greatest job in the world (at least one of them) and he's one of the greatest at doing that job.... Because he always seems to find a way to give his audience a little piece of that feeling to each of us To keep and take with us.... So thank you for that Sir.... A satisfied customer

The MP-18/28 really does it for me too. I think part of it is the square cut front of the shroud with the vent holes drilled in it. *Ian style chef's kiss*

@@_ArsNova I think I figured out the myth of Sten taking MP40 magazines. It can’t, but many say it can because of manuals saying it can accept “Schmeisser” magazines. However, as many of us know, the British soldiers called the MP40 the “Schmeisser,” despite neither brothers being involved with the design. But, with this revelation, and Schmeisser being involved with this gun, then it’s actually true that the Sten can take “Schmeisser” magazines. And by that, we mean the actual “Schmeisser,” and not the MP40.

Something I imagine as scary as fuck: Imagine you are a young american/british man, joined the armed forces to kill some Nazis and protect your nation and free others. You are all lit up but then you see wounded, your first corpses. You think: "No big thing, scrifices happen and the germans are retreating, war is almost won." Than you get into combat, in the woods and you hear (sub-)maschinegun fire, angry german voices, screams of agony, plains humming over your head and then artillery bombardment. Hearing the old reports of former soldiers from any side are so chilling.

I can see why it's "smooth" in the slo-mo, as the bolt slows and stops just before it hits the back of the receiver, it looks like, so no slamming going on with a too soft spring or too light bolt. It's tuned juuuust right. :)

@@Ramonatho truly. People think the guns we have now are much more advanced lol. Same ideas just new fancy furniture, light weight alloys etc... I'd say small arms development from the 1950s (ak/ar) to now hasnt changed much. They keep trying to reinvent the wheel basicly. Go look at the fg42 8mm mauser full auto at an insane rate of fire and the weight is nearly the same as modern combat rifles, the recoil isnt even that crazy on it from what ive seen from videos.

That's the movie I call "Clint Eastwood Kills Everyone" I once sat and tallied all his kills in that movie, and it was in the 30s, compared to Richard Burton's handful. Also, that long range kill shot on the tower from the back of a moving bus with an MP-38/40. Funny enough, Eastwood had just come off doing the spaghetti Westerns and had built a reputation for playing the dangerous gunman, only to completely eclipse his kill count in this one movie than all his westerns combined.

It was deliberate. It means you can use any captured magazines. Very important if you are dropping them to the resistance movements or you are a commando on a raid.

As with a couple of other full auto guns you've featured, it's obvious in the slow-mo the bolt never reaches the rear of the receiver. There's no impact. So the spring stretches out recoil _evenly_ over the entire travel of the bolt. This dramatically increases the control and comfort firing, as is obvious from the slow-mo segments. Something I look for now every time.

Watching the bolt handle, it's not bottoming out in the reciever- constant recoil before constant recoil.

It's really wild that such a small change can make such a large impact on how the gun handles in high-speed video. With so many SMGs you see the bolt slam the back of the receiver and the shooter gets jerked and the muzzle bounces off target. A heavier recoil spring or a slightly longer receiver completely eliminates that.

Please bare in mind todays 9mm ammos are absolutely not the same as the ordonance 9mm of the german army. Usually they used +P+ loads with steel core bullets. They might not had the same behavior at the time.

Watching the slow-mo I can see that this beast has relatively soft recoil. The bolt is slowed by that recoil spring beautifully, no horrible jerkiness of a bolt hitting the back of the receiver.

Briefly owned a Lanchester registered tube gun, wondering if someday you can do a comparison video and a short range video on both. My Lanchester was at my dealer awaiting the papers when my dealer called me and said if I'm interested in doubling my money plus some change left over, let him know. Sadly, I fell for it but made up for it in getting an SWD m/11. Sometimes, I have regrets but seeing and hearing the sirens of the dollar signs calling, it was hard to say no. 2:28 The classic open bolt SMG flinch! I did the same when I dry-fired a Sten gun for the first time many years ago and was unfamiliar with open bolt SMG's. For a brief second, I actually thought it fired because of the sound and recoil from the moving bolt. My mother also did it when she dry-fired my MP-40.

I am reminded once again. We were in the armoury cleaning sterlings and brownings. A buddy handed me another Sterling but first cocked it, put the safety on, pointed it at my head, and tried the trigger- safety worked so he handed me the gun. And then I found the duff round in the breach. (We were in a cadet force on an RAF station for a week. We thought the best way to get on the range to do some shooting was to help out in the armoury for a couple of days. Next day we shot sterling, browning, and 😍SLR😍. I was hooked, I went on to RAF Regiment)

Another subgun that uses the Schmeisser magazine is the Belgian Vigneron. My grandfather got to play with one of those while he was in service in the early 60's. I hope you'll get the opportunity to check out one too in the future, i would love to see that!

The MP28 was based off the MP18 (first SMG of WW1) and was the basis for first British SMG of WW2 (Lanchester) which was simplified to the STEN, which was copied by the Germans for the MP3008 as the last German SMG of WW2.

Not according to imfdb. It's been a while since I watched the movie, so I wouldn't rule it out, but perhaps what you saw was a Sterling? Those were widely used in the OT (as the Stormtroopers' standard issue blasters) and they also have perforated barrel-shrouds and feed from the side. Although neither feature is really prominent on the modified Sterlings in the film.

I don't really know how much control you have over it, but I much prefer the videos where the mic doesn't pick up so much of the sound of the bullets firing, and instead picks up the sound of the mechanical action of the gun. Being able to hear those delicate mechanical noises that you'd never hear in person over the sound of the gunfire, seems like an excellent reason to be recording a machine gun in the first place.

Tiny little correction on the history lesson at the start: The Sten magazine comes from the Lanchester SMG, a straight copy of the MP28. The brits had a few in inventory and built upon that for the Sten. Otherwise, you're great as always.

I am lucky enough to own a transferable MP18 with the snail drum magazine. It is a heavy sub gun and has light recoil and a very smooth action. It’s quite noticeable with the snail drum mag inserted.

Essentially perfection in the making. No real fundamental differences between it and arguably by the best SMG ever made, the MP-38/40, just the ergonomics and ease of manufacture being perfected.

@@zoiders The folding stock is probably it's biggest weakness as a firearm I'll agree, but it was one of the first of it's kind worked reasonably well. But if you told me to pick the best 9mm SMG in the world today with iron sights, I'd pick the MP 40 over any gun save the MP5 and UMP. I agree though the PPS 43 is a very good gun and I'd rate it second best of the war. Sten Mk 5 was good enough, it was still just a Sten but one that actually worked reliably lol.

My Lanchester Mk1* uses Sten mags as you know - looks and sounds the same naturally with a very similar kerchunk on the first round and the same slow(!) rate of fire, given that it is a British copy of the MP28. Nice! Thanks Ian.

What I like about inter-war SMGs is, most of them are exceptionally nice. Their design says "trench broom" but their manufacture and finish says "display gun." It's like somewhere between the concept stage and production, someone said "what if we make it as expensive and as shiny as possible, guaranteeing our design won't actually be used in combat due to cost constraints?" When WWII broke out, design philosophy became "we have some sheet metal, some springs, some pipe, and you can use the wood from the pallet they came on *if you have to.* You have until yesterday to make a machine pistol design." Such a stark contrast between guns like the one in the video and a Sten or a Grease Gun.

What a quality! Milled from the full material and with a beautiful wooden buttstock. The later submachine guns were manufactured under the conditions of the war economy and therefore came with stamped parts. The MP38 looks like the cheap version of the MP28. Interestingly, wikipedia believes to know, that MP28 and MP40 weigh about the same when uncharged. About 4 kilograms. The MP28 looks much heavier.

@@Elmarby Ian isn't incorrect as the basic design formed the basis of the MP38/40 magazine and Lanchester/Sten, but there seems to be minor dimensional differences to the MP38/40 magazines that mean they're slightly too wide for the Sten magazine housing, even though they look near identical. Out of curiosity we tried multiple original Stens with multiple MP38/40 magazines and none of the latter would fit. I'm assuming that if a Sten mag fits an MP28 then the latter's mags would indeed fit a Sten though. Anyone own an MP28 magazine and Sten who'd like to try it and report back?

The MP-18 is one of a handful of selectfire arms I actually have experience with. It is front heavy and quite off-balanced with those drums, but I find the weight and slow rpm keep them extremely controllable vs. others I've tried. It's no match for my Suomi, but I do much prefer its aesthetics.
