So they admit that they give us huge workloads and tight schedules that directly conflict with the safety procedures we would otherwise follow, yet KEEP such strict parameters regardless? Yeah. I do what i need to do to meet the quotas. You dont like it? Loosen the schedules, or distribute the work better.
@Robidu1973
@Robidu1973 3 жыл бұрын
If the schedule is impossible to meet, I'd just let the machines run out of material so production grinds to a halt. Since the machine operators don't blame me for it (they know what I'm capable of doing), they make an appropriate statment in their production reports that surely gets seen by our boss. The results could become interesting.

I know right? I work as a reach truck operator in Sweden, I am one out of THREE reach truck operators in our company, yet we supply the entirety of Sweden with their DIY and paint supplies, luckily we have a fourth truck on the way. Anyway, I am constantly filling up picking locations and trying to work around the orderpickers, and they almost never follow safety guidelines and regulations. This one time I was raising a pallet up to the 5th shelve (nearly 9 meters up), and this guy walked UNDERNEATH my load trying to pick something!! I didn't notice him because I keep my eyes on my load, as I should. So I begin to extend the mast, and he was still there. He had to jump ONTO the pallet in front of him in order to not get crushed. He then had the BALLS to blame me for not seeing him!! Like, what the fuck, BASIC warehouse rules say to stay away from reach trucks with their loads high up in the air, at least the length of the mast in distance. Those pickers never do. Pickers... am I right?

Time = money. The more time a driver takes to operate, the more money the company loses and that's the bottom line. Drivers should not have to feel this pressure, they're not the owners of said company and they don't foot the bills. BUT, they do feel the pressure, self imposed or boss imposed. That's when they start taking shortcuts and bam, somebody gets injured or worse, dies. So drivers have got to use their judgement and keep a balance between speed vs safety. Sadly, judgement is an ability that not everyone seem to possess.
@alfabutt1
@alfabutt1 5 жыл бұрын
I teach and I think this is a great neutral comment. In a perfect world we can drive this way 100% of the time, however, due to idiots in management they expect everything done faster. This only leads to mistakes and complacency which if someone is injured or worse could close a place down which in turn nothing will get done and no money will be coming in.
@davidmurphy1207
@davidmurphy1207 5 жыл бұрын
Very true. You could definitely go faster than this. Bottom line production based budgets start getting curbed real quick when a single wrongful death suit claiming pressure from quotas had a hand in the accident has a massive impact on that bottom line. A single death could cost millions in lost revenue. Couple that woth workman's comp claims and it's a losing strategy exacerbated by a tightening labor market. Safety was easily overshadowed in the past decades. In the last 5 years logistics is going away from this credo.

Thank you so much for these tips. i recently graduated out of Forklifting Operations Safety from MidFlorida and the class only took 3 days to learn. Afterwards I kept watching tip videos so I won't jump into these kinds of jobs and make a mistake. So far when I was going through this training sequence I only made one mistake. Not properly placing my load whether it was big or any other size. I already know the safety of ALWAYS looking back once you hooked on your load. And always wait until you reach your destination to raise your load for placement. This helps VERY much.

Goods load onto second-level shelf/rack is not supposed to be shrink wrapped as we use tugger to reach to pick ordered-items onto tugger from this second-level shelf/rack . I did a course this week and passed for 2 forklift trucks, the practices used here were similar but ours were intensive in safety. The course allows for only 25 points. 3 of them can be added for distances and non vertical mast. Fatal 5 points is considered an observational check, or drive ng with forks raised above a certain height, even driving up inclines can get you points. Ive warched some failure videos today, brolliant examples of ehat can go wrong.

The second guy also had his head hanging outside the confines of the truck, since he was carrying an oversized load which was obstructing his view, and that should have been yet another mistake. Traveling in reverse to have a "better view" is not recommended. It should only be done when actually backing away from the load location after receiving or delivering a load, or when moving the truck out of a parked position where there is not sufficient room to move forward and out of that position. He should have taken those 2 pallets in separate loads rather than take them together in one oversized load, even with someone to guide him. No pedestrian should be near the fork truck when it is in motion. This is coming from someone who is very interested in becoming a forklift operator. Learning as I watch more of these scenarios. SAFETY FIRST and ALWAYS.👍

Almost none of the safety precautions take any more time worth complaining about it. Looking behind you before backing up is just common sense, just as is driving backward when your forward view is fully obstructed by the load. Lifting and traveling is not a big deal, so long as you're reasonable about it and have cleared the workspace beforehand. If the site is being worked properly, others will not be trying to scoot in and around a moving forklift anyway. The nature of the crates and aisles I deal with require that one lifts and turns into the racking, rather than the other way around. Move fast when it's safe and slow when there are risks. Common sense.
@weeardguy
@weeardguy 3 жыл бұрын
Yep. There are a few people at work that always drive forwards with a load so big you can't oversee it AT ALL. I always make sure I'm not around when they are moving it as I just consider it plain dangerous. Lifting while travelling: darn, if I could not do that, jobs would take a lot longer. But indeed, sometimes I pick up loads I know are wobbly and I certainly won't be lifting while driving towards the truck.

Useful entry level learning tool. Now for the fork truck operator in me, definitely a demo truck. There’s absolutely no scratches on the sides or back plate and the forks look absolutely brand new. On a serious note, why is there no pulse light on the rear of the cage? Also I’m fairly certain OSHA requires all PITS, regardless if it’s a high reach stand up, standard loader or warehouse forklift, or MO/tugger trucks to have their headlights on. 🤷🏼‍♂️ I’d also like to add that most forklift to pedestrian accidents are caused, not by operator error/unsafe operations, rather pedestrians being distracted by paperwork, cellphones, and ESPECIALLY, not following safety protocols involving following designated walk ways. Where I work, it’s a constant problem, people have been hit, it’s always the operator, with no load, simply didn’t see them because of the mast, and the pedestrian came across a production line into the drive path into the lift its self. Just saying. Safety involves everyone, not just operators.

Yep! I also see a lot of newbies coming waaaayyy too close to my reach forklift when I'm operating with a pallet on the top shelves, sometimes just outright coming below the forks even when I ask them to stay back. Orientation is way too short and lacks critical safety related instructions being taught, since even the trainees are too unaware of the rules. I'm basically the only person who takes stuff seriously sometimes. There was once a situation when one worker thought he could just come pick up his products right next to the forklift and when I told them the minimum distance from the reach forklift was 5 meters, he shucked "Oh I thought it only meant when I was on my forklift". Asked him why he thinks the rule exists in the first place and explained that if something were to happen and stuff started falling down, he'd be dead then and there.
@Thealmightybyron
@Thealmightybyron 9 ай бұрын
@@finniko1995 seems to be that common sense is a rare trait these days. 😆. I am constantly dumbfounded that in moments like you described, that no one ever takes gravity into account. Most skids I deal with are interlocking poly totes, however, I often get products on my loads that are cardboard and wood pallets with really poor wrapping. If you’re like me, you probably despise repeating yourself? I grow very tired of telling pickers to back off. I have to constantly tell them when they get too close (they’re in a rush so they can get some down time to go take a 💩 or go get a snack or socialize/play on their phones before they deliver.) that if that falls, it isn’t going to be a clinic visit, it’ll more likely be a meat wagon hauling them to the morgue. All I get is “oh my bad”. 🤦🏻‍♂️. Always a young kid. Sometimes an old guy that just gives no F’s anymore. Either way, it’s stupid and management wants to blame the unloader/stocker, not the person breaking the rules.

I caught all the errors, however one thing we do at our warehouse is never travel distances or round corners forks first. If there's someone around that corner and you run into each other the forks are going to do much more damage to the machines or the product you're carrying than if your counterbalances hit each other. Also if you're traveling forks first and stop suddenly you risk loosing (some of) your load which can be especially dangerous to pedestrians. Our machines are set up so that the forks first travel doesn't have access to the higher speeds. This encourages operators to put the forks behind them.

I do drive a forklift and if you do it this way nothing will ever get done and you will get fired don't get me wrong safety first but also common sense should prevail if you were allowed to drive a forklift in the first place you should know all this and do what suits your environment and just not run over people

Personally I saw other violations on the first half of the video. 1. Driver was not wearing a Safety Vest (Which is required by OSHA) 2. Driver placed a pallet of items in the steel that where not shrink wrapped. 3. Driver drives with Forks forward. You should always drive with the Forks tailing behind you./Drive backwards.
@brandoncaldwell95
@brandoncaldwell95 6 жыл бұрын
craigerlist The vest crap ive never done. The pallet unwrapped, common. Especially in grocery stores. Coca cola pallets are the worst of them ive seen and another i dont remember the company. The forks behind, ive always done as it just feels safer overall. Especially on those walk behind. I swear ive maxed that walk behind machine out with a soda pallet. Very weird having to swing that damn lift while it way up in ther air as no room for the lift to begin with. That damn lift was rocking and twisting.. First and last cola pallet i did..
@brooksp1191
@brooksp1191 6 жыл бұрын
None of those are violations. 1. Vests are only required for pedestrians not lift drivers. It is only required if the driver is split between groundwork and driving. 2. Unwrapped pallets can be placed in low steel but not high steel and if it is single layered or loose boxes. 3. Driving forks forward is allowed so long as visibly isn't blocked by a tall load. While companies may apply these rules, they aren't actually OSHA violations.

Just the machine itself a regular lifts like the one they show in this is about 3 to 4 times the weights of a car , the linden models where the driver is sitting sideways is a 8000 pounds machine , and that’s without anything to carry so just add what you carry to the 8000 pounds and at this weight even at 2 mph you can easily squish someone and kill themes in seconds

Yeah, managers always want their staff to work quicker until there's an accident. Then all fingers point to the operator who feared for their job. I always say to my delegates, if you're constantly put under pressure by management and supervisors and you think it's unsafe, then the best choice you can make, is to leave that shit hole.

Maybe back in the day that was true. With unemployment as low as it is and every employer getting more desperate for quality candidates, it's becoming harder to get picky about your labor force. You are pretty much scraping the bottom of the barrel now. Your alternatives are usually ex-cons, opiate addicts, and the lazy entitled section of millennials. At this point, almost everyone that wants a job and is productive is already working.
