I started out back in the early 60's driving hi-lows in a dozen different shops big and small. I remember one warehouse, I was talking with some of the other drivers. One of them said they heard they were coming out with automatic transmissions for hi-lows. We all agreed that was crazy they would never stand up to the abuse hi-lows get. Try and find a hi-low with a stick shift now. One other thing, I just can't remember ever driving one with rear view mirrors? Drivers were suppose to look where they were going. There was just too many things sitting low you would never see if you depended on mirrors. Another thing, every place I worked, people did not respect hi-lows. I constantly had people walking in front of me or behind me. If you didn't see them and they had to jump clear, it was always your fault for not watching; and they would yell at you. One day I was really stressed out when a foreman walked in front of me and jumped over the forks to avoid being hit. He kept going and never looked back. I got off and I was shaking. Another guy came over and asked me if I was OK. I burst into tears and my nose started bleeding. I couldn't get it stopped and had to go to the hospital. I cannot count the times trucks pulled out of the dock before I gave the go ahead. One guy finally caught me and dropped me into the dock pit. I thank the Lord I didn't get hurt. I probably have 25,000 plus hours on those things. Been retired ten plus years and I don't miss them. Very nice job you did on this one. I was fortunate to have gotten to be first to drive a couple of new ones. It didn't take long for them to look like the one you started with. Seats would wear out and it was like pulling teeth to get the employer to buy a new one. The ones with larger tires on the front were much more comfortable to drive, and handled better then the ones with four tires the same size. NICE JOB!
