FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION | TIPS FOR CREATING PURPOSEFUL FORMS

When should you pay attention to the concept "form follows function" in your industrial design work? Here are 3 instances when you should think about form follows function. The example I use is a sun glass case that comes with ICI Berlin sunglasses.

Hi Claus, sure, can you give me some examples of more complicated products that you would like to see? ie. products with electronics? I'm working on a new video where I interview one designer about one of their product designs... we could definitely choose a more complicated product.

Hai Morna, I appreciate what you do and like your channel. Actually I have perspective on the package you've review in this video. Well for me there are more you can come up with that sun glasses package like one for example that package can be made more efficient in material without sacrifice it purpose (because the video is about form follows function). I wonder why the cap is that long in size because the package is to contain an object with fix dimension, was it necessary to have the threads that long just to close it, etc.

Hi, that was a really helpful video.. I was thinking maybe the design had some inspiration from the simple concept of nut and bolt... hexagonal top, threads, I guess maybe it's very obvious

Yes, it's quite likely. In fact, the original purpose of this case was to house Drill bits. Ici Berlin kind of "stole" the form or more likely, purchases the drill bit case and slaps their logo on it.

Hi Leo, yeah that could be interesting. Even within the same category like backpacks.. there are many different forms for different purposes. I have a bunch of new content already planned (and limited time) so I'll need to see if it fits or not. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Hi - I guess the question is "what sort of plastic box" were you imagining? What would the design of a "plastic box" look like and why? The Ici Berlin case is actually not fancy at all. It is the same case that is used to store industrial milling machine tool bits. So in this case (pun intended), Ici Berlin have adopted something that already existed and added their graphic identity. You mentioned your teacher sent you here - May I ask what level of school are you? It'll help me with content.
