The last of the pruning groups to to cover is the young roses plants that have been in the ground for less than 24 months
🟢 make sure you save this video for later if you have young roses yet to be pruned in your garden
These i leave to the end of the pruning cycle to allow them to harden up and send just as much starch and sugars down to the root systems as possible
The first few years in the ground is all about establishing your plants getting it happy settled and growing away well and creating your permanent framework
Remove any dead diseased dying or crossing stems first , once this is complete it’s time to open up the centre of the plant or bowl as we call it
This can involve as little as just removing one central stem allowing for
as much light and airflow to the centre of the Plant as possible
remove any weak stems which will be unable to bear the weight of a flower and then shorten your other stems back creating a permanent framework around 30 to 45 cm high, selecting an outward facing Budd wherever possible
doing this will encourage the plants to grow outwards and naturally create its own open space in the centre of the plant fending off mould mildew and fungal problems in the future
when you’re finished, make sure the plants is completely de-foliated and has no leaves left whatsoever, collect any that have fallen around the plant and give it a thoroughly good mulch with well rotted manure, home-made garden compost wood woodchip or soil conditioner
And then has everything it needs for the season ahead
Slow release granulated fertilisers can be added in late March or early April or you can supplement your mulches with liquid feeds as and when the plant needs them when it’s actively growing or flowering
