Former Chinese senior colonel: War in Ukraine 'has nothing to do with China' | DW Interview

Former Chinese Senior Military Colonel Zhou Bo told DW's Richard Walker at this year's MSC that although the war in Ukraine was "not in China's interest," it also was not an issue Beijing could solve. "War in the heart of Europe has nothing to do with China," he said. "This war is not in China's interest. If it would stop immediately, we would be very happy." Zhou added that it was wrong for Western politicians to blame Russian President Vladimir Putin for the invasion of Ukraine, saying that Russia "took this action because of NATO expansion and Russian leaders have been talking about this since the Soviet time." He also said that since China and Russia share a long border, it was in both countries' interests to ensure they had a "good and stable" relationship.

This is a great reporter. He raised questions and did not disrupt the interviewee and waited for the response before asking a follow up question. Why can't reporters all do it? Those so-called reporters seem to just raise questions for the sake of making a posture.

It's nice to see an "old-fashioned" interview that follows diplomatic rules. No aggressive wolf warrior muscle flexing on the one hand, no aggressive rhetoric on the other. Diplomacy is not easy and rarely direct. But you can learn from both sides of a respectful interview if you listen to it critically and with distance.

There is too much diplomacy. China does not follow protocols, probably most don't anywhere in the world but we are in a serious crisis with them and asking diplomatic questions and getting diplomatic answers is a game of underhanded gibbirish. What are we learning? I learn that they don't want to take responsibility or admit anything. Not if it puts them in a vulnerable situation and it's understandable. But since they have proved over and over again blatant dishonesty.

Total double talk from China. China is hedging its bets because it wants to invade Taiwan. Mainland China has NEVER had control of Formosa. Taiwan has never been part of China. Don't ever forget what Xi had to do to his political opponents to become a new Mao. Posibly half of them dissapperead from this world. How can you forget "0 covid" policy when people been starved to death becasue couldn't go out to get food. I will never forget Tienanmen's student massacre. The guy is a diplomat talking rounded and well chosen words. Basically he expressed Chinese strategy "a tiger on the hill watching two elephants fighting". In reality it's Sun Tzu teaching they want to encircle US so the the military confrontation won't make any sense. Imagine if China convince Putin to satlle and could guarantee a peace with Ukriane. They would gain a lot of control in Europe and the most european powers would be very happy. China plays the long game so that you'll miss the moment when you realize you lost. Therfore I guess US is provokative as long as they have military superiority over China.

@@dl8935 The West actually put intense pressure on Ukraine to negotiate and give up territory back in the mid-'10s when Ukraine would've preferred not to. The US government is not the driving force behind this war. Neither is the military-industrial complex, although they're happy to take advantage of the situation to boost sales and rake in gobs of money. The US isn't the center of the geopolitical Universe, believe or not. Far from it. Also, the US is not neglecting its people because it wants to support Ukraine. It has plenty of money to do both and would have even more if it decided to actually tax all of its citizens. Unfortunately, there isn't sufficient political will to do this (for a number of reasons, most of them involving campaign finance) nor is there to invest in and improve the lives of ordinary citizens. Every attempt is blocked.

One can never overrate the importance of mutual communication. Listening to the grievances, objections and complaints of a sometimes irrationally or even mythically envisaged "Enemy" could lead to a more emapthically perceived thinking and most of all an awareness of the generally irrational albeit often through thoughtless statements provoked fears of theirs. This could well lead us also to question our own thinking. Zhou Bo forinstance mentioned the divisive opnions even within the military establishment of USA, a career driven enterprise, if there ever was one. No body is perfect, even when some are driven more from fear than others. Fear mongering however is the bread and butter of many human beings and the ultimate driving force that galvanises the masses. Well done. More such communication should be the order of the day.

Different peoples of humans have different cultures and civilizations. Zhou was merely responding with his own personal opinions, and based upon his own Chinese culture aspect and how they might view things. There is nothing wrong with people and civilizations having different viewpoints and opinions.

The world is too small, and China too large and central to imagine things moving without their involvement. As an American, I am used to our government being fairly blunt and unashamed in it's broad foreign policy strokes, especially when they are made in error. China has the advantage of centuries of geopolitical and strategic experience to draw upon, and as a superpower going forward, has a lot to teach, while still having the opportunity and real need to take lessons form the West as well. For the time being, Russia is surely the world's problem, but one that lies literally at China's doorstep, so it shouldn't be surprising that they would see no advantage in confrontational posturing at this point. A journalist's job is to report truth. In my prior comment I gave an example of two blatant lies. That should be challenged by stating current known truths (the sky is blue and Putin does not have coitus with his mother) and then have the interviewee explain/provide evidence for their position. As it actually stands, many journalists don't challenge lies for fear of looking biased which in turn has created a false equivalence problem where every stated thing is left to actually seem like there are two sides to every argument when in fact there isn't. Unironically, this strategy is often used by despots and authoritarian regimes like Russia and China to create confusion and just enough doubt in the populace in order to keep them from challenging the powers that be on their lies.

@jeanpierremichel. Hahaha, you must be right. People in the west arrogantly think that people in the Global South jungle are salaried obedient servants, but those in the western garden are full of knowlege, wisdom and objectivity (and maybe needed no salary). And they hang on to the fantasy that Putin woke up one morning in February 2022, felt bored, and decided to invade Ukraine unprovoked. Since the start of the Ukraine war, I am beginning to understand why Europe gave us World War I and II. Europeans (or at least their leaders) seem fully incapable of self-reflection. They think they are the angels, and the Chinese and Russians are the monsters. Well, China and Russia didn't give us World War I and II. And it looks like Europe is now determined to give us World War III. That says something.

There is little to understand. Free, happy, and prosperous Taiwan is a direct threat not to China but to the CCP cabal that claims to speak for all Chinese people. The CCP does not speak for all Chinese people. There are over 50 million outside of the CCP control or less than 5% and that burns them up--like it does to all absolutist tyrannies. The CCP under Xi is not a force for good in the world: territorial expansion, debt control of countries to obtain objectives, sea expansion, wolf warrior diplomacy, etc.

What a fantastic interview! This is journalism at its greatest! Extremely well put questions by Richard Weller answered equally extremely well by Zhou Bo. Kudos to both of you! I am especially impressed by the answers given by the latter. I don't think I've ever watched a Chinese official - or 'just' one 'Chinese Senior Military Colonel' attending the Munich Security Conference as he's described in the introduction - being so direct and open in answering the questions he was asked. Agree with him or not isn't the question here - this is journalism - but he gives a valuable insight in how the future may look. Thank you very much, both of you, for making - I hope - everybody wiser by watching this.

This is a great interview! It really shows some of the miscommunication and misunderstanding, I think, between the United States and China. There are trust issues with the 2 countries, and I would argue the trust issues go both ways and are valid on each side. I have to say this is an amazing interview though.... hats off to the interviewer and DW! Hats off to this Chinese colonel for showing transparency or at least what seems to be transparency. The East and West think so differntly, but hopefully our humanity will bring us together. Can the human race be civil and respectful to each other? Even though history doesn't share my optimism, I think and hope we can. Thanks for a great interview!

What I see is someone that repeats what someone else told him. NATO expansion has nothing to do with why Putin invaded Ukraine, Mikhaïl Gorbatchev said it multiple times, there was never questions about NATO expansion back in 1990, he never asked for it, and quite frankly it was inimaginable that any country of the ex USSR block will trust the west to ask them to join NATO. It is quite insulting to pretend otherwise

@@TheJoBlackos You see someone that repeats something that someone told him? He does it so naturally without notes or scripts in English (not his mother tongue) in detail and logic. Many politician can't even read their notes or speaches in their own language that well. Nothing to do with Nato expansion? Look at how the US reacted to the "spy/weather balloons" that flew over their country? What was their reaction? Two missiles spending over 1 million US dollars to shoot it down. Imagine when you have increasing numbers of military bases surrounding your country by you so called "enemy" what would your reaction be?
