every member of that 2016 team will always be loved and embraced by chicago.

I’m shocked Maddux received that reaction…the ownership made it clear they weren’t going to retain him. And he still appreciated the Cubs fans

It was a different time. A lot of old school baseball fans from the 50’s-70’s were still regular baseball fans in the 90’s, and they grew up seeing a ton of players playing their career’s all for the same team. They assumed anytime a player signed with another team, it was because the had no loyalty and only cared about the money. In the modern day, that can still be true that it’s 100% about the money. Some could argue that is why Bryce Harper left the Nationals. But, for the most part fans today see it as a business decision and that it’s normal to see HOF players play for several teams over their careers. As far as the ‘92-‘93 off-season goes, I’m willing to bet the fans weren’t educated enough on why Maddux left. There wasn’t an internet for example. But yes, the Cubs pretty much ran him out of town even though he wanted to re-sign. They thought they could get 2 quality players for the price of Maddux. How wrong they were.

Chicago fans were simply jealous with Greg, the sad part was they took it out on him and not the idiot GM who didn't even bother offering a qualifying offer where the Cubs would've gotten an extra draft pick once he signed with Atlanta. He went on to even more accolades and the fans got crapped on by that GM and more after.

Harry actually read the Cubs fans the riot act for that during the game - and again during the postgame show

The first thing I thought of when I heard the Cubs fans booing Maddux was the end of the 1998 NLDS when the Braves manhandled the Cubs. An ESPN anchor casually joked, "If only the Cubs had a Greg Maddux of their own..."

These are all awesome. Do the Mets next, please.

Why would anyone Boo Gregory Maddux?! It was basically Cubs decision for him not to return.

All that love…..and then there’s Greg’s reception. 😂. Like the one poster said earlier, it was just a different time. And also, if we’re being honest, that one stung and hurt the most. We now know what happened with the cubs front office but at the time it felt like a betrayal.

I hate that Sammy never got this moment and likely never will. 😢

He doesn’t deserve it. He disrespected the team and the game by using Steroids
@PrazMasterАй бұрын
@ For moments like those that are featured in this video, that shouldn’t matter. I’m one of millions of millennial Cubs fans who became Cubs fans largely BECAUSE of Sammy. Both the Giants and (kinda surprisingly) Pirates have welcomed back Barry Bonds. The Cardinals have welcomed back Mark McGwire. The Cubs owe it to what is likely the largest or 2nd largest age demographic of their fan base to have him back. Everyone who grew up watching the likes of Banks, Santo, Fergie, etc. got to see those guys paraded around Wrigley after they retired. We should be afforded the same opportunity with Sammy.
@cathykobiske6928Ай бұрын
@ it’s about respect to the team. Corked bat steroids they come with the responsibility. He knew he was using and still to this very day won’t admit he is guilty. The cubs won’t let him anywhere near the organization until then

@@thegoat6189I think he’s referring to a one day contract. I think they should do that with all of the core from that 2016 team. That title was so special, I don’t think anyone would have a problem with that. I wish we could have kept that team together, but it was time to break them up.
