Former MLB executive says Sacramento is taking advantage of opportunity by bringing in A's

The Oakland Athletics are moving to Sacramento, where they will call Sutter Health Park home from 2025-27--and potentially beyond.
During Friday morning's edition of The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross, David Samson, former president of the Miami Marlins, joined the guys to discuss what goes on behind the scenes for MLB owners and executives during relocation and what motivators are at play.

Joh Fisher put 7 playoff teams on the field in the 18 years he's owned the team and the fans still didn't show. I think it's the City of Oakland and the fans that don't care about baseball

@@Spinach_D It’s not Oaklands fault. John Fisher constantly trades star and fan favorite players because he doesn’t wanna pay them to keep them. The A’s historically under John Fishers ownership, have always had the lowest payroll. John Fishers payroll for the entire team this season is $40 Million. Think about that. Theres MLB Players that make that in 1 year. John Fisher doesn’t wanna invest into his team. A few years ago, we had Chapman, Olson, Semien, Piscotty, etc and they were star players but got traded because Fisher doesn’t wanna put out a good team. Thats why there are no one showing up anymore. Why show up if ownership doesn’t show love to the fans and if John Fisher doesn’t care about his team

@@LILDOGGY9922 the A’s having a low payroll is not a John Fisher thing it’s an A’s thing going back to 1900. The A’s have a cycle of putting together super teams that win then they break them apart, rebuild and do it again. They have done this for 105 years before Fisher arrived and they have won 9 x WS and 17 x AL pennants. And with all that success they still can’t get fans to show up. Since Fisher took over he has put 7 playoff teams on the field in 18 years. Few teams have that success. And still the A’s can’t get fans out to the park. The city of Oakland has refused helping fund several new ball parks and renovations. Every other MLB team gets public funds so why should John Fisher be expected be the only MLB owner to pay for his own ball park?

The Vegas deal isn't a done deal, my bet is that the A's stay in Sacramento,, no one in Vegas wants the A's! lol

Absolutely. Sacramento is already infinitely more excited about just 3 years than Vegas is about the entire future. Personally, I believe that the A's ownership is skimming on a lot of details right now on purpose, but I think Vegas is falling apart and they're easing into shifting to Sacramento instead. That's just my tin foil hat take, but I'd bet on it.

I doubt Manfred cares. Viv said there is no guarantee, just an audition. Take in A's, have that opp. Do well and it will get noticed for sure. Whereas other cities won't even have that opp.

That's what I'm thinking, I'm in Oakland but I might be compelled to stay an A's fan as long as they are in NorCal. But definitely no longer. If they stay in Oakland for the interim I might go to some games just for my daughter to see.

Expansion in West - Sactown, Portland, SLC - feel if MLB were smart they would allow a team in South Bay Area and no longer accept Giants' geographical claim over that area.

There's no way Sacramento or Oakland would be expansion options. Sacramento's best shot is Vegas falling through and the A's stay in Sac. Salt Lake City is much more likely for expansion because they've already thrown out proposals showing they're willing to shell out public money. New cities are way more thirsty for sports than existing ones. To their detriment too.

Samson ain't right. Vivek is helping Fisher move to Vegas by giving him a sweetheart deal (did I read this right, NO RENT!) by keeping his costs down so he can use that $ for the Vegas Stadium when the locals refuse to pay for the stadium. All the owners want to be in Vegas and that gambling $.

I see the Athletics future as a brand to represent all of Northern California. They even have green color in logo !!! A Vegas move would be a disaster plain and simple. There is much more money and way more baseball fans in Northern California 👈

Oakland’s failed leadership and politicians drove out the Raiders, Warriors, and now the A’s.. the small number of loyal A’s fans can try to blame the A’s ownership, but why would an owner want to stay in Oakland? Even when they had excellent teams they never were among the leaders in attendance, and Oakland as a city has significantly deteriorated (crime, costs, traffic, etc.) and it’s certainly not a destination…

Do you work for Fisher or Manfred? Unless you live in the Bay Area I don't think you can claim to know. I worked in Oakland. Warriors left for the Big $ in San Fran, Raiders left for the $ in Vegas. It's billionaire $ games. Stop victim blaming.

Exactly. The irony of having this liar and conman on regarding this topic is hilarious. There's a reason this guy has never worked in MLB again (other than for his father-in-law Jeffrey Loria). Nor does this guy care he helped con the taxpayers and fans of Miami and paved the way for Fisher and others. Little to this guy on this topic only to know what not to do and how these cons work. Players are gonna love playing in front of a sold out, rabid Sac fans every night. I even see Fisher allow Dave Forst shopping money for longer term talent. Now that they’re getting out of oppressive and bippin’ Oaktown; it’s time to make new fans happy. Help solidify Vegas’ chances for a stronger and competitive team. Sa cra men to clap clap clapclapclap! Another A’s positive is that the Central Valley sports media now doesn’t have to compete with two sports radio Bay Area stations that will and have never mentioned anything A’s nor Raiders. Their only Oakland team mentioned were the Warriors. The Warriors, Niners and Giants rules Bay Area radio. Rarely any Sharks news either.

Look, guys, the A's are going to Sacramento for at least 3 years. Get over it. I hope they stay in Sacramento. Half of the A's fans base are from Sacramento anyway. I would much rather them stay in California than to move to that overpriced, craphole of a city that BETS on sports. Congratulations, Sacramento and everyone else can just get over it. Oakland has been deteriorating for the past ten years and it has to do with it's politics . I love the A's history but they have always been treated like the Giants evil stepchild . When they won a third straight world series they had to settle for runner up to the Giants and that includes fans attendance . Fisher should be forced out of baseball like the Clippers owner a few years back but lets be real . Oakland is not a viable place for a team

You all need to settle down. Be upset with ownership, be upset with the commissioner. The A's coming to Sacramento is fine. I understand the guilt however the team was drawing 5000 a game which is sad. Levi stadium is almost 40 miles from San Francisco and Oakland to Sacramento is 80. So 40 miles difference and they still will be playing on the same tv channel. There not taking the Sacramento name and who knows whats going to happen over the next 4 years. So be happy and relax.
