In the final moments before the collision near D.C., air traffic control recordings show the controller on duty asking the helicopter if it could see the airliner. Paul Rinaldi, former president of the National Air Traffic Controllers' Association, which is their labor union, discusses how the collision could have happened.

Out of thousands of flights in crowded airspace unfortunately there will be crashes. Flying is significantly much safer than automobile travel. 😔

The incompetent helicopter crew called the wrong traffic. They were watching the RJ behind the one that they killed everybody on. The wasteful USA military has horrible oversight, and the people in charge never face consequences for their crimes

@ the commander in chief. Every living POTUS needs to face trial for thousands of Workrimes. Carter is lucky , he went to hell before he had to face trial

ATC did not say "do you have CRJ in sight TO YOUR LEFT"? Heli did not respond "I have approaching aircraft IN SIGHT TO MY LEFT". heli was possibly looking to his right (pilot side of heli), at a different aircraft just taking off. ATC did not advise heli to abort as distance continued to close until collision.

Once pilot confirms visual sight, responsibility transfers to pilot, if they are unsure of what they see it's up to pilot to ask for clarification.

@@Raelven yes, understood sir- but my point was that simply handing-off 'responsibility' without confirming pilot observations does not improve situational awareness or decrease odds of collision with 'unseen' aircraft. Its a procedural swiss-cheese hole...

@@nealsotn1865 The helicopter pilot DID assume “visual separation” two times. You have to listen to the entire conversation. It was the pilot’s responsibility! Also, we haven’t yet heard the conversation that occurred before all of this happened.
