He was a terrible awful person. His proclamations on condoms *not*(?) being a useful tool for the prevention of HIV/AIDS in Africa and worldwide was a terrible crime on humanity that undoutably led to greater numbers of deaths. He was responsible for much of the covering up and moving from parish to parish of sexually abusive priests until the mid 00's when great public attention was the only motive for him changing methods to giving any responsibility and punishment to these monsters. His teachings while in charge of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on abortion, women and homosexuality were incredibly dangerous and reduced the move to tolerance of Catholics on these important issues. I truly believe that Ratzinger was responsible for the greatest exodus of Catholics from the Faith and I personally began my journey from being devout with weekly masses until the age of 16 towards atheism/agnosticism as a result of this monsters terrible positions and teachings. It's really not that bad and certainly nothing to be afraid of. In the meantime, I try to do good things like volunteer for charities; help poor people; donate to charities; etc. Merely praying and having faith will not make my wishes come true.
