Full interview with former UDA terror leader Johnny 'Mad Dog' Adair
Speaking to crime and investigative journalist Patricia Devlin, Adair - jailed for 16 years for directing terrorism - talks about his paramilitary past, supporting peace in Northern Ireland and new threats against his life. The loyalist also gives his views on allegations of collusion, the instability surrounding the Northern Ireland protocol and the current threat paramilitaries pose to peace.

I am the same age as Johnny and I grew up on the Shankill Road. Thankfully, I never got involved with the Paramilitaries. His explaination about seeing the wild west all around him as a child is very accurate. Strangely, my father was a fervent Orangeman and loyalist, but when I reached the age of eighteen, I moved to England to work. I met a girl from Dublin living in London and I married her. Eventually we moved to Dublin, where I still reside ten years after her passing. You never know where you will end up in life.

Not going to lie but this dirt box was responsible for murdering my father, he was only 28 and because he was Catholic. Yet here I am looking at him and it fills me with joy that I don't feel hate for Adair because if I did, I would be similar to men like him and we're nothing alike, as i won't allow hate to consume me like it did him. Turn me into a serial killer. You may have killed my father but not his spirit. I loath all paramilitaries, on both sides. I'm a strong man who achieved my goals in life through hard work and never got into trouble, treating people with respect no matter their faith, my girlfriend is protestant. So I have no hatred towards anyone. I do want to hear things from his point of view and must admit, I respect him for speaking about this when others will not, perhaps watching this might make me stronger. Yet I do believe there's a special room in hell for monsters like him. Long live the peace process.

@@johnbest4513 Hi John, are you talking about Adairs boy? Mad Pup? Mad Dog, Mad Bitch, and Mad Pup, he has neither. Driving about Seaside Town "Troon" as if he's a celebrity, he's in severe medical pain, you can see it, he's self medicating with Alcohol, I mean listening to it today, well I could only watch first 10 minutes and off he went. My pal put a ball hammer over his head at a March, and he walks with a limp, he's old, frail, but no doubt he'll get to live. Look at Martin McGartland! Last time I saw it, he was getting on a ferry to go back to Ireland, that's what They want. Him in familiar territory. Look how many bullets have been in him, so they've not forgotten and have long memories, McGartland is either buried in a bog, or back in England. How can Adair live above his means? Soft Top BMW? What a "Mobility Car" bull! Punts Weed, aye yea dae. You couldn't find target's, you were passed info from Brian Nelson, UDR, "Martin Dillon - The Dirty War/Shankill Butchers, IRA "Tim Pat Coogan" "Ed Moloney "A SECRET HISTORY of The IRA" Great books, and I see the name Freddie written, Scapateche? I’m a Catholic and detest the likes of Adair and take issue with his rather bellicose statements that he makes when trying to claim he was taking the war to the IRA when most of the victims were innocent catholics however, one point I will make, is that, surprisingly, he is a lot more coherent than I would have thought given the fact I read that he largely flunked school/education in his formative years. He is able to express himself to a good level and is a lot more articulate than you would initially think. Whether it is something he was able to cultivate along the way I don’t know but it was surprising watching this video how well he was able to express himself

Protestants should not have permitted Catholics and Nationalists to be treated like shite by Stormont the Unionists politicians and London. However, they actually enjoyed it from my experiences even rigging voting against our communities to keep the power. I have Protestant friends but they still barely speak to me around the 12th fortnight as we call it and which i never understood why . Now the Protestants and Unionists parties are whining about how they are treated but deny what i have spoke of here . I care about my Protestant friends and would do anything for them but i will never forget nor forgive they way they allowed us to be bullied around and even murdered by the RUC B-Specials and the British Army . Some Protestants did try to stand up to it for their Catholic neighbours and they were ruined by the authorities and their own people for doing so . A lot of shite to happen in a wee Province that London Stormont and even Dublin ( because they were cowards ), allowed to continue for decades . By the way living in a basically Loyalist area as a Catholic like i did was not easy. The ironic thing is it was Loyalists who walked me home as a child not Unionists nor the average Protestant when i was jumped when something bad happened or around the 12th. when real hate was shown towards Catholics . However , it was the Unionists and ordinary Protestants who were doing the jumping and beating the shite out of me and others while the Loyalists came to my / our rescue and i will never forget what the Loyalists done for me and others on the positive side .

Because everybody already knows that? Because it’s a moot point, and the answers can only be what we already can imagine. You’re wanting some kind of reckoning as if the reporter is fit to represent God himself, and she’s smart enough not to shut down her interview by taking it on herself to preach righteous indignation at a man she already knows was part of a brutal conflict before she agrees to sit across from him. Sanctimonious denunciations from the pulpit wouldn’t improve these interviews as much as you fancy.

Both sides were as bad as each other simply isn't true he has a selective memory. Chosen to forget the fundamental cause of the trouble was hate and discrimination against catholics which came to a head in the pograms of 69 when they tried to murder and burn 1000s of catholics out of their homes. The UVF carried out murders and bombing from 66 onwards before the troubles officially began.

But yet he glorifies Loyalist Serial killer Michael Stone. Who indiscriminately attacked men, women and children, killing 3 with Grenades and 2 pistols. The victims were attending the joint funeral service of Gibraltar 3, in the Milltown Massacre of 1988. He's cliams both sides were bad but yet defends the ideology of loyalist paramilitaries who mainly commited Secterian killings against catholics and mistakenly protestants thoughout the while conflict.

Although this was a really interesting interview and I can see Johnny has progressed he was disingenuous regarding the targets of the UFF. They killed very few active IRA members. Almost 100% of Loyalist targets were innocent catholics. Just like the kid Noah recently was picked up and murdered by loyalists who are being protected by the PSNI as suspected informers. I really despised the republicans growing up as they were indirectly responsible for innocent catholics murdered and also killed many people in cold blood. I have no illusions about the republicans and hated everything they represented and what they did. However the loyalists didn't take out the republicans. The targeted innocent people like Rosemary Nelson or Martin O'Hagan or just regular fellows walking along the street at the wrong time. Johnny can dress it up all he likes but he was behind many atrocities against innocent people not involved in anything. One of the Loyalist mottos was KAT. Great interview but Johnny was no saviour for Ulster. I'll never accept paramilitaries as being legitimate. I've lost too many friends to legitimise their existence. I'm glad he's on a better road but his understanding of history of the troubles is sheer delusion.

IMO paramilitaries are both sides of the same coin, I don't have any love for Adair but at least he has the sense to recognise that violence is never the answer and recognise the error of his ways or so to speak and half a sense of humour. Edit: I've read reports in the media that Adair was person A and 14th Intelligence company along with the MOD confirmed all of this, however Adair does raise a very valid point that he was under constant 24/7 surveillance by the RUC and 14 Int, again in my own opinion it's very hard if not impossible to go to a secret arms cache, get firearms, ammunition, load said firearms with ammo, then plan, organise and carry out a brutal murder while under 24/7 surveillance. I again want to reiterate that I don't have any sympathy for Adair or people like him but he does raise this crucial point. Comment for you Patricia Devlin, I really enjoyed this episode I'm going to watch more of your fantastic content and see where it goes, but please keep it coming, one of the best podcasts I've listened to in a while. I wish the verse below would convict both sides of the conflict of how ridiculous this all is. It’s ironic how those who use the religious title of being a Catholic or Protestant yet hate each other, go totally against the God who they say they serve and believe. 1 John 4:20 If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.

Jonny is rewriting a lot of history here and is trying to present himself as a respectable character, which he was not. Almost everything he is saying here - from how he joined the UDA to how he went against the IRA - is false. An RUC man once described him as a gangster wrapped in a flag. Read a book about his antics if you've got the stomach for it; even amongst the paramilitaries he was a total lowlife. I like this podcast but I do question the ethics of giving someone like this a platform in which they largely go unchallenged. However, if he was really challenged he would likely storm out (at best).
