Not only is there a wraith in both Pikmin 2 and 3, but after beating Hey Pikmin’s final boss, it’s revealed that it was being controlled by some sort of semisolid, parasitic creature inside it, resembling the previous wraiths. I’m starting to get the feeling that wraiths are gonna be the Pikmin equivalent of Kirby’s Dark Matter bosses

It doesn't say anywhere that it was the Plasm Wraith, technically, but its a common theory that it was responsible (though after playing Pikmin 4 I'm starting to have doubts about it really being the wraiths causing the crash).

But outside that, the fact Olimar keeps on crashing and the Plasm Wraith is obsessed with keeping Olimar implies it's trying to KEEP Olilmar there and the Drake was crashed as collateral presumably to try to STOP them from taking Olimar.

I don't think the purple pikmin and waterwraith interaction has been officially explained but... In Pikmin 2, Olimar notes that the violet candypop buds contain various smelly oils. When I first played the game, I assumed that purple pikmin were coated in these oils, and the oil disrupts the waterwraith and makes it vulnerable / turn purple like them... because, well, it's made of water. Kinda dumb but it's a fun headcanon.

In Pikmin 4, the thud that Purples makes are explained as systemic tremors so perhaps these tremors are able to shake the otherworldly waterwraith into physical form.

Just played the Pikmin 4 demo and I can say every cave has a different theme and mechanic being explored, they are not randomly generated and are all puzzle based, also they seem shorter so you don't spend most of your time in the underground and time does pass by while you are inside of a cave but its really slower yet you can spend as most time as you like inside one since when you go out or while you are inside the 10 seconds until Night time timer will never pop up, there is 4 explorable caves in the demo and 1 cave that does requiere the use of Blue Pikmin and Winged Pikmin to be able to complete it.

To me, Submerged Castle is still the greatest part of any Pikmin game. It breaks all rules and expectations of the player in a way that makes it challenging, disturbing, crazy, chaotic, and but at the same time is fair, fun, and overall just memorable. It takes the entire Pikmin formula and pumps it up to 11.

I wonder why the Plasm Wraith was so possessive of Olimar, and so despairing at his departure. Maybe it could have just been trying to reciprocate the attachment that Olimar must have had to it, as he came for it thinking it was a treasure. Hopefully this take is worth something.

As far theories goes, it is speculated, that the Plasm Wraith could be the planet PNF-404 itself or being connected to it. If you search up the texture for PNF-404, you see, that the full map actually looks very similar to the Plasm Wraith. Funny thing is, that the Plasm Wraith is located in the center of the map inside this huge hole. Think about it, if the Plasm Wraith may be the planet itself or being connected to it, it also was the cause for each crash landing in every game, having control over gravity as well and each time, it was a captain. If I remember correctly, the japanese word for "wraith" in the original japanese is "Umibōzu", which is a sea creature, that tries to kill the captain and harvest their treasure. The Waterwraith also has this similar name called "Amebouzu". We are unsure, if there is a connection between the Waterwraith and Plasm Wraith, because I ain't sure if the japanese also has similar names for both, but I remember, that the notes of Olimar's Piklopedia entry mentioned, that the Plasm Wraith is different, than the Waterwraith. Either both are just different incarnations of the same being or are different beings of the "wraith family". Yet speculations still regard the Plasm Wraith's intentions with Olimar. Maybe it wanted to gather information from Olimar, maybe also killing him like the Umibōzu's goal is as well. I remember a comment from one video which mentioned, that Olimar passes out due to his suit, giving the Plasm Wraith the chance to drag him back. The connection was, that the Umibōzu also keeps the corpses of the captains. Which in this case, Olimar seems like to be in a "dead-like phase" and the Plasm Wraith keeping him there and watches him, sounds like a similarity to the Umibōzu. There is nothing really confirmed yet and all these are just speculations, but maybe you guys can fix or add something to what I mentioned. Maybe I have mistaken some theories or put them in wrong words, let's see what you guys can come up with. :) vvv ALSO PROBABLY SPOILERS FOR PIKMIN 4 BELOW!!! vvv To be honest, seeing this clean house and in Pikmin 4 is a bit fishy to me. It seems to me like a work of some anomaly like a wraith or something. Either this house is just a trap for the captains to get lured, like a sinister intention. Maybe it is a throwback to when humanity was still alive, but it's actually a trap in disguise. Maybe it's a wraith or any other creature, which shapeshifted into a human-like being and being the final boss of the game. Or maybe, humanity rebuilt their civilization somehow, but don't ask me. These are just my thoughts. :)

There was thoughts of the Plasm Wraith wanting to kill Olimar, but i have some doubts about that. If it wanted to find a way in his suit, it could've just used it's razor-pointed needle arm trick to pulverise his suit until it breaks. I mean, a single hit of that needle stab already takes a large chunk of health off the trio that tries to safe olimar. Imagine how many times it could stab him in the long time that he was captive.

I think it would be funny if the plasma becomes a recurring antagonist only for something more deadly comes up and either minces the wraith or just sidelines the wraith. The wraith is still more dangerous due to its focus on the captains but other beasts can be more generally dangerous or even vengeful as in they will seek out any captain that wronged them and so on. I have a head cannon that there is an absolute beast slumbering beneath the ground and when it wakes it will be an apocalyptic event

@@somestupiddudewithayoutube4676 Again the idea I am going with is that the Wraith isn't the only threat. It is relatively new in the series if it was the single celled creature in pikmin 1. So my idea is that there is an ancient creature that probably is too powerful/ large for the wraith to assimilate or is say a predator of the wraith. The wraith seems to be beyond our world but as with the water wraith it really isn't. It is just an apex predator who has a unique morphology that allows it to dominate. So what if there is something that can overcome that? We already saw that the wraith can take the form of different creatures in 3 so seeing it take on a behemoth form is fine but not really as unique as say a different creature. It is like bending over backwards to make bulbords into skitter skates at some level. You remove the original inspiration and it becomes its own unique thing at that point. Like emperor Bulbord is really unique and it still keeps the idea of the regular ones, same with the wraiths.

⁠​⁠@@victory8928Ehh I’d rather them not, I’d be fine with the plasm wraith not being the final boss since they’re supposed to be out of the spotlight, but I think having something kill it or be it’s predator would be a waste. The plasm wraith and it’s cousin, are very clearly not supposed to be animals or even alive in the traditional sense. They are powerful supernatural beings that are so unnatural that Olimar wasn’t even convinced they were real in his notes. Also regardless of the size of whatever opponent, the plasm wraith made an ecosystem out of itself, and unless it’s carrying something like olimar it’s completely invulnerable. It may even be immortal too.

I mean to be fair you can also cheese the Submerged Castle pretty easily. I recently played all Pikmin games again and, since I never got to beat 1 and 2, beat them for the first time, and thus I also played the Submerged Castle for the first time. Anyways, basically what I did was set up a 5 minutes timer on my phone, collect all treasures possible, leave before the timer ended, and repeat the process, if I didn't get some treasure which I think only happened twice, I just had to enter the cave again.

The one thing that detracts from Formidable Oak, for me, is the captain controls. The game controls aren't designed to care which captain is which, so if some of them are in the same squad, it's tricky to switch which one you're controlling or throwing.

I remember back when I didn't have a Wii U and was the biggest Pikmin fan (because of the Wii port of Pikmin 1 and 2), I watched the KZbinrs of back in the day (spanish ones obviously), and when I saw Formidable Oak for the first time I absolutely shat meshelf. It was terrifying, intense, and kept me in the edge of my seat just scared and fascinated of this beast chasing after the heroes in an attempt to consume Olimar and keep him from escaping. And then when I got a Wii U (thanks uncles!) and got the game to play it for myself, I wasn't scared any less than I was before. As a matter of fact, even with the knowledge of what was coming I would say I was even MORE scared by it LMFAO. Really good video, really great at showing the point, 10/10. Chefs kiss, even. (Also reminded me that I am yet to play Pikmin 4... Oops! :P)

Nah, the time limit was an iconic part of Pikmin 1, that added that edge of tension that helped make the RTS aspect of the game actually a viable and interesting factor. 2 did such a disservice by removing such a core part of what made that RTS experience, creating the weakest core Pikmin quest, only surpassed by Hey Pikmin! It doesn't matter if its doable, it provided enough pressure to drive the gathering of parts, which 2 fails at. Even the few regenerating enemies fail at this, and are instead irritants, not to mention how they removed any of the complexity and fascination in above ground level design for shitty looking caves.

@egbertmilton4003 you'll hate pikmin 4 then. So far it doesnt have a limited number of days and it looks great. Also the RTS experience isnt taken away from by having unlimited days. Pikmin 3 has an overabundance of days and no ones complaining that it lessens the RTS experience. If you want a story reason for wanting to get done quick, the president gives you one when hes hunted down by the loan sharks. Idk what enemies you're talking about. Also the overworld is the same size as pikmin 1's if you think about it. They add to the experience by having wonderful caves in which you have a different constraint on your rts experience. It's beautiful.

I absolutely love the fight with the Plasm Wraith, its easily the best setpiece in the series. It takes the "big invincible monster harasses you through an entire dungeon before you finally get to stand your ground and fight it at the end" thing that the Submerged Castle did, but even better since it not only adds plot relevance but shifts the mood of the actual fight from cathartic to climactic. Actually fighting the Waterwraith is the payoff, being able to effirtlessly stun it, break its rollers then chase it around the floor like its a Benny Hill skit is absolutely hilarious, but it wouldn't fit the end of a game's story, so shifting the tone to less of a "finally i get to read this thing the riot act" and more "i have to stand and fight if i hope to get olimar back safely". And THAT MUSIC, my god it's beautiful. Having beaten 4, while I think its the overall better game (more variety with dandori challenges and battles, a tougher and far longer main story, etc.), nothing it did quite topped the Formidable Oak for me. Even if it is easy to cheese by having Brittany run around in loops so the Wraith stays near the entrance while Alph and Charlie can clear a path without the giant lump of jelly getting in the way.

My only problem with pikmin 3 are the controls, I feel I'm fighting them more than I am using them. I don't know how to explain it but aiming was a lot easier, and felt a lot more rewarding than in 3, where in three you mostly rely on the lock feature. I feel like the camera angle has something to do with it, but that's just my guess.

i remember when i was younger, i would watch my brother play pikmin 3. When he got to the plasm wraith, it took him 5 days to beat it, and he kept practicing the battle even after he beat it. He would also turn the volume up really high. Every night after I watched him play it, i would have nightmares because of how horrifying the music was to me. It would make sense if the wraiths in the real world would be plasma, bacteria, or mustard, and that is hilarious to me. Reasoning Plasma - the namesake and how it seems so malleable, and retaining it's form even when it's not intractable. Bacteria - bacteria can look like nothing, but when dirtier or bunched up, it can be seen on a microscopic level. Bacteria also creeps in the fashion of the plasm wraith. Mustard - it is yellow and goopy, and can be dyed into different colors (like purple for the water wraith) and to clothing mustard can pose a huge threat to the dye of the the fabric. IRL it seems to always be a present threat when using it and scatter about when the bottle is squeezed. It can say, seem to trap smaller things in itself (such as bacterias) and is virtually indistinguishable when grouped back together (via knife.) And, as we all know, mustard has the well known property of transforming Into various different elements and hover as it pleases.

Formidable Oak is peak and good at making me mad cause while you do a bunch of puzzles with multitasking you have to run from the everlasting doom of the plasm wraith worm eating olimar and some of your pikmin then after that you do a hardish boss fight unless you use all rock pikmin

My personal "problem" with 3, i.e. why I can't rank it above 2 overall, is that it's somehow too tight. Every playthrough is basically the same. And while that's great for speedrunning, I love the feeling of never quite being able to be perfect that comes with 2 (among other things). It definitely has the best gameplay so far in the series. Tbh I kinda think this level stinks. It's bad game design to introduce the new "follow Brittany" mechanic right at the end of the game. There should have been 1 or 2 other moments earlier in the game that introduced it and fleshed it out a bit more. Also the entire area can be cheesed by looping the plasm wraith around the first loop area by the crystal wall and the little hill. Also the final boss fight is really easy if you just use only rock Pikmin, the game probably should have made you use every type. Probably my least favorite part of the game

it not really complex enough to happen multiple times, at it's core the boss is about playing the game thinking fast, I think it's a good evolution of the games complex, also I consider it to be the main boss "fight" and the end part is more of a victory lap

Nah, I totally disagree. I like the sudden shift to horror for the Formidable Oak. Its the ultimate test of how well you can multitask with 3 captains, a mechanic that Pikmin 3 prioritizes much more than 1 or 2. And sure it can be cheesed but I don’t think most players will know how to cheese it on a first playthrough which is where the tension is the most effective.

11:15 It's not the easiest boss. It's the worst. It was so annoying. The boss 2 was the best, you could strategize around it, like first remove the electric part using only yellows and then get Pikmin of other colors.

Wow, as if Titan Dweevil isn't easier. Literally, just remove the Shock Device with Yellows, and then spam purples like the rest of the game. None of the remaining hazards are a threat, seeing how easily you can whistle Pikmin out of death. 3 has the best boss, with the Plasma Wraith, as even with the rocks making the fight simple, its also not the proper method, and you really won't get much progress with just rocks. With a full squad, it tests every Pikmin type properly, with an interesting damage mechanic, and has ways that can kill good amounts of Pikmin that aren't exclusive to an easy to disable attack.

I disagree. The Titan is easy; you just have to back up whenever it attacks and rush in when it’s done. It’s just a big old damage sponge with no interesting attacks. The Wraith is different: it changes up its attacks far more often, better utilises arena space instead of just covering the whole thing in a hazard, and while it can be made easier with rocks, you still have the option of engaging with certain hazards, and you also have to dodge them AND counterattack instead of just waiting for them to fishing by leaving.

@@supremekirb The Titan's only easy due to only needing one type and mindlessly spamming and whistling, don't know how they'd fix that issue though, especially if it somehow returns in 4 (then again, Emperor Bulblax is returning, but we'll see in a few weeks time).

I'm playing Pikmin 2 for the first time with the Switch release (missed it on release) and I definitely agree with it being the weakest of the series. The complete lack of time elements, especially having infinite time in caves, just really takes the fun away from me. It also feels like they removed the huge majority of the exploration and puzzle solving elements away in favor of a mediocre (imo) dungeon crawler.

I’m playing it for the first time as well and I think the caves are plain and unfair. Half my Pikmin died from falling rocks! I use to have about 60 of each Pikmin (aside from purple and white) now I’m down to 10, so I’m having to go to the first area for more Pikmin.
