Could you clarify what an emulsion is verses a lotion?

Hi Megan, lotions are technically emulsions. If it contains a water phase, an oil phase and an emulsifier then it is an emulsion. Lotions are often referred to as lighter, thinner emulsions, like sprayable sun screens or thin body lotions. There are so many ways to create an emulsion which depends on the ingredients used, with a big variable being the emulsifier. An emulsion can be a very light, thin and sprayable formula, or a very thick luxurious cream (usually designed as a rich formula for hands and feet). We teach you how to make a range of emulsions on our Diploma in Organic Skincare Formulation :)

can you please spell the name of the emulsifier you love in the uk (MFVE) but has a different name in the u.s.? Discussed at 48:55... and is this good for water in oil emulsions? thank you. oh and that dynamix - is there a lock on it? i don't like using any stick blenders or similar mixers that have locks on them - too hard to hold lock off while also mixing. thank you

For water in oil emulsions, we have a blog post on Olivem 900 which is a W/O emulsifier formulabotanica.com/olivem-900-emulsifier/. We also have lots of information in this post formulabotanica.com/organic-natural-emulsifiers/. The Dynamix that we use doesn't have a lock as such, but you press the button to operate and then release it to stop. It also has a variety of speeds. I hope that helps. :)

Hi Bebo, a homogenizer is a piece of lab equipment which is often used in creating products such as emulsions. They are different to a hand blender as they break up the particles giving the formulation a much better consistency.
