I believe his organization is called The Gary Sinise Foundation they do so much for SO many veterans. He is a truly good man.

When she was a child, she knelt in the cornfield with Forest praying for God to make her a bird so she could fly away free. The feather flying away at the end is very significant. Jenny is free from the demons that plagued her life.

It was never that Jenny did not think Forrest was good enough for her, but the other way around. She did not want her own lack of worth to brink Forrest down. Forrest was the only man in her life that only wanted her rather than something from her.

This movie is actually a really good lesson in American history. Forrest is involved in several real historical events like the school desegregation in AL and Watergate. There's also real events happening in the background while the story progresses like when Forrest starts running and the barbers are listening to the news or when he jumps into the water after hearing his mom is sick, Reagan(?) is getting shot at. One last thing, the college football coach with the black and white checkered hat is Bear Bryant. Until the current coach Nick Saban, he was the winningest coach in University of Alabama history. My dad hates this movie's portrayal of him because he says Bear would never swear like that and that he was the nicest person. He would go on news conferences after games and either praise the team if they won or took the fault himself if they lost.

Fun fact: The actor who portrayed Bear is Sonny Shroyer. Most famously known for his role as Enos Strait in the original Dukes of Hazzard television series. He also played the motorcycle cop who pulls over Snowman (Jerry Reed) in Smokey and the Bandit, and gets the middle finger from Frog (Sally Field) before chasing the Bandit (Burt Reynolds) and crashing his bike into a pond.

The issue is that they would be appropriately angry because the reason people are so understanding these days is because they think empathy is a virtue. Empathy is not a virtue because you will make the same garbage excuses for them that you would for yourself in that situation and usually they are not deserved or warranted. The only virtues are compassion and sympathy. And only when used appropriately. This tramp Jenny didn't come back to Forrest until she was an AIDS riddled waste to con Forrest into thinking that's his kid. And every bit of decency and anything valuable about her had been used, abused, and given away to everyone other than the person who loved her. Jenny is absolutely the villain in this story. And the reason the world is on its way to hell today is because of the exact same lack of accountability you are willing to give a movie character. Imagine the lack of accountability and responsibility you expect from anyone else in life. And just like jenny, especially when it comes to women, accountability is kryptonite.

Gary Sinese, who played Lt Dan, was so moved by his role and the part that real military man have played in keeping our country safe that after the making of the film, he spent that time to the present working for various veterans charities and has received many accolades from the veterans administration for his tireless efforts in helping veterans.

Jenny was not always leaving because she wanted to hurt Forrest, but because she felt unworthy of him, and that by staying she _would_ hurt him. She saw Forrest as an innocent, a child-man who didn't know what love is. Her own innocence was stolen from her, and she didn't want to do the same to him, forcing (as she saw it) her love onto someone mentally younger. So every time she felt drawn to Forrest romantically, she left. Only after exorcising her own demons was she able to accept and reciprocate Forrest's love. Even though her period of lucidity was cut short by the consequences of her chaotic life, she was finally able to give Forrest something of what he (and she) had always craved, spending what remaining time they had with each other. Some people in her situation never attain that lucidity, nor exorcise those demons. Jenny finally did.

Don't worry about crying. None of us were expecting to cry when we first saw the movie back in 1994. It's always a bit unsettling when you see the audience coming out from the previous showing wiping their eyes. Including the guys. They don't say in the movie but I later read that the authors said she died of Hepatitis.

What a great film. Robert Zemeckis directed a lot of great ones, including Back To The Future (all 3), Romancing The Stone, Who Framed Roger Rabbit (phenomenal movie that combines animation and live action with no CGI) and Contact. If you want a movie that has visual effects that still hold up after decades, he's the guy. So many people misinterpret Jenny. They hate how she treats Forrest. One of my favourite lines is "sometimes there just aren't enough rocks." Forrest may have a low IQ, but he understands that Jenny had a horribly abusive childhood (SA), and that can mess any kid up. That's where Run Forrest Run comes from. The only way she knows how to deal with something is run away from it. She's not trying to hurt or use Forrest. He's the only thing that holds her together. But some people need to go on their own journey. When she says "you don't want to marry me" she thinks she's protecting him because she knows she's gone through a lot of misery in her life and doesn't want to dump that into her best friend's lap. For a guy who didn't do well in school, he understands people better than anyone else. He knows why Jenny is the way she is and doesn't judge her for it. He's very forgiving of everyone in his life because he has a high emotional intelligence.

You know it’s weird. My memory of that part played out just a hit differently; then with all the reaction showing the scene it’s making me scratch my head. I remember the scene; he says “is he smart or is he LIKE…” and then he mouths the word “me”. That’s the way my mind tells me it plays out.

My brother had leg braces just exactly like what Forrest wears as a child. Lots of kids did back in the early 1950s. Back in 1952, my younger brother and I both caught polio while on our way with Mom from Oklahoma to join Dad in Japan. There was no polio vaccination back then; no one had yet determined how the disease spread. But polio ravaged the bodies of so, so many children. Some, like me, just suffered a bad fever, and that was it. But way too many kids, like my brother, suffered deforming damaging to their legs. My brother's Achilles tendons were really shortened, causing him to walk on his tip toes, which then cause deformation to his toes. He suffered from this condition from 1952 until he died in 2010. Some kids suffered damage to their respiratory muscles and had to spend the rest of their lives in an "iron lung" with only their heads outside the machine. It was as huge a deal to parents as was Covid. It was a world-wide monster, just lying in wait and hidden, ready at any moment to ruin those precious kids.

The feather is a metaphor of the unpredictability of where life may take you (where the wind blows). Forrest says something to that extent at Jenny's grave when he talks about destiny. It's also reflected in one of the popular sayings of the movie about the box of chocolates; "you never know what you're gonna get."

While you didn't show them all in your reaction, Forrest met 3 Presidents, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon (and he called security, which led to the Watergate scandal which caused Nixon to resign). He met famous musicians John Lennon (and inspired Imagine), and Elvis Pressley (and taught Elvis how to shake his hips). He was awarded the CMoH for his actions in Viet Nam. He participated in the ping-pong matches that were part of US-Chinese reproachment. He played football for Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant at the storied University of Alabama. He was present at the desegregation of the University of Mississippi, and the Viet Nam stop the war protests in Washington DC. He was kicked out of a meeting of the Black Panthers. Probably a couple of other famous events that have skipped my mind. A lot of the footage was from real events with Forrest placed in via CGI, and sometimes with the audio dubbed in (like with John Lennon). A great movie.

Kurt Russell met Elvis as a kid,then did a movie with him a few years later,then did John Carpenter first TV movie about Elvis, then played Elvis a couple times like in 3000 miles to Graceland, then does Elvis voice, here! Lt. Dan DID end up being an astronaut of sorts, with those titanium legs they used to make the Space Shuttle. (Reference to scene in bar when Lt. Dan sarcastically says that if Forrest becomes a boat captain, he'll become an astronaut). Also, the flock of birds flying off when Forrest is at Jenny's grave ... Jenny, remember, as a young girl, prayed to be a bird to fly far, far away from her abusive father. She got her wish. By the way, the flock of birds in that scene were a happy accident of nature, not computer-generated.

Sending mail from Vietnam to any US address was free. No stamp required. There was no problem receiving mail. It did back up a bit when troops were out in the boonies, but it all got caught up upon return to the rear.

So to explain the return mail….. remember Jenny was allowed to live with an aunt or Grandmother or something? Thats the address on all the letters …. Now you would think that the grandmother or what ever would accept them or something….. so the only logical conclusion is the grandmother is dead and now total strangers live in that home…. If Tom Hanks likes working with you in a movie, there is a good chance that you will appear in other movies with him. Barry Pepper is the sniper in Saving Private Ryan, and one of the prison guards in The Green Mile. Gary Sinise is Lt. Dan in this movie and also in Apollo 13.

Well no, that's getting the basic premise of the movie ALL WRONG. All Jenny knew to do was run away, from the sexual abuse, and she's the first to tell Forrest to run..."run AWAY Forrest", when he RAN AWAY from the kids who threw the stone, run Forrest run, he RAN AWAY from the guys in the truck, "if in trouble (in Vietnam) promise me you'll just run Forrest"...granted, he ran and saved lives, bc Forrest was everything of good intentions, so Forrest running away always turned to something good, he never knew those things would happen though, "he was just running", never knowing what he was running toward, Jenny didn't either...."What's my destiny, mama?" But significant when Forrest decided to go for a run (for 3 yrs), he was RUNNING AWAY from things (at home) he didn't understand (SAME AS JENNY HER WHOLE LIFE) that caused him pain and confusion..."Why are you dying, Mama", "Why won't you marry me, Jenny?", then she left again...FORREST RAN AWAY from the pain and confusion too, SAME AS JENNY...they were really both alike along the way really. End of his 3 yr run, he said "I'm tired, I think I'll go home now", that was symbolic of Jenny as she had ran he whole life, and got tired and went home...recovered spending time w/Forrest, he was ALWAYS her safe space, even as a kid when she would sneak out at night and sleep w/him, well as an adult, SAME THING AGAIN, she knew she was still running though, and didn't feel worthy of Forrest, but she always loved him, and so she had sex w/him, the only way she knew to express love, as was done to her as a kid, and that's what her father probably told her, even though abuse, that's the only love she knew or was shown, sex was love...so she felt bad for telling Forrest no she couldn't marry him, she knew it hurt him, so there, sex reverted to sex as the only way she knew how to express love....but how could Jenny love Forrest as he deserved when she couldn't even love herself.... of the awful things that happened to her as a kid, taking her self worth? It was when THEY BOTH stopped running... away...culminating in his 3 yr run away from home which was Jennys whole life of running from home, that they found each other. Yeah, good things happened to Forrest when he ran...shit happens/have a nice day...but Forrest was always running away too, just like her...what she told him to do...run Forrest, run, "run away Forrest"...from the kids throwing rocks, and he did...later on "I did like you told me, Jenny". Forrest and Jenny were both always running AWAY. The 3 yrs run he went on may seem the quirkiest in the film, BUT IT WAS REALLY SYMBOLIC of Jenny's whole life running away...mom died "Why...?", Jenny wouldn't marry him "Why....?"...so he ran away....Jenny's sexual abuse, I'm sure she asked why, so she ran. They were both alike the whole time really....but when Forrest was running, he was always running away too if you think about it, never knowing where, or for what...he even said that w/his 3 yr run (even after successful, asked him mother wht his destiny was).

I think she doesn't get enough credit because she really made people not like Jenny, and they forgot that she's an actor playing a role. And also, a lot of people are clueless to the trauma Jenny went through as a child, and how it absolutely affects their personality and behavior as an adult.

As you are younger and not from the US, there may be parts of the movie that you did not fully understand. For a better understanding of some parts of the movie, look up some of these personalities and events. Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant (famous football coach at University of Alabama}, Governor George Wallace (Segregationist Governor of Alabama), Abby Hoffman (Political and Social activist, co-founder of the Youth National Party and part of the Chicago Seven, anti Vietnam war movement leader), Dick Cavett (popular talk show host from 1969 to 1975), Watergate Hotel (site of the break in of the Democratic National Convention headquarters that ended the presidency of Richard Nixon, Black Panther Party (Marxist-Leninist and black power political organization). These figures/events were all depicted in the movie. Reading about these may put some of the movie in better context for you.

Talk about a great year for the Best Picture Oscar. Forest Gump, Pulp Fiction and Shawshank Redemption were all up at the same time. Upon reflection Shawshank may have been the movie that deserved it but I love all three. It is tough for a younger generation and being a foreigner to get all of the historical figures and events Forest interacts with.

Lots of this movie was filmed where I live now !! Twenty years ago I took my daughter to the spot of where he was sitting on the bus bench. Hunting Island is where they filmed the extraction of his crew.

*Jenny's* problems started with her abusive father (many women look for men like their fathers or because how her father treated her she thinks she doesn't deserve a good man.) So she keeps going after "Bad boys" when *Forrest* was right there in front of her the whole time

A few tidbits of info: First, Jenny's 'virus' was AIDS. Second, this is the 2nd movie that Gary Sinise and Tom Hanks did together. (first one was The Green Mile, the second was Forest Gump and the third was Apollo 13). Third, Jenny kept 'running' away because of her traumatic childhood and had to hit bottom before she could get back to living life again and always believed that she always felt that she wasn't good enough for Forest, which is why she was out searching but always found herself back to ground zero which was Forest. Gary is a hero himself as he created a band named aptly called The Lt Dan Band and goes around raising money for wounded soldiers and does a great deal for soldiers. This is Summer, 2024. I wonder how many years from now this will be rewatched. Fifty years? There may be too many references (Watergate, Smiley Faces, etc) for it to hold specific talking points (sort of like the AIRPLAINE NAKED-GUN flics) but I think it's got universal appeals far beyong a few skits.

I get a lot of enjoyment out of watching this along with reactors who know all or at least some of the references. I understand there is a LOT of American historic references, so I don't expect non-Americans to get them, but I am always pleasantly surprised that a lot of British and Canadian reactors actually know most or all of them. The movie had a great soundtrack as well, even though I understand you can't play copyrighted music (or not much of it anyway) on KZbin reactions so we didn't hear any of it. Good reaction! Enjoyed!

I became so pissed at "Jenny" as the movie, finding myself totally immersed in the film! Then I finally realized that it was Robin Wright's great acting, as well as the writing and directing that influenced me.

You have to remember she was sexually abused by her father as a child and never got over that. She did not see herself as having any worth. Her whole theme was to run from her problems and not deal with them. She never dealt with her trauma until the end. She told Forrest that "You don't want to marry me" not that she didnt want to marry him. She knew she would not be good enough for him and she was just too messed up.

A bit of trivia for you, James and Millie. When Forrest talks about getting Jenny's letter, he says " out of the blue, clear sky." Well the saying here in the U. S is " clear, blue sky". Meaning something unexpected. Well, a couple of years after this movie came out, one of the most famous country singers in the U.S. , "King" George Strait, released a song called "Blue Clear Sky". The writer of the song was inspired by Forrest Gump's line.

Two other very good, once in a lifetime must watch, movies are The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Both movies are directed by the Frank Darabont and adapted from novels by Stephen King who is well known for his horror story books, but these two movies are not about horror. He also does very good story telling outside of the horror genre.

Remember when Forrest said that Jenny's Dad was a loving man? He was always touching and kissing his daughters Jenny and her sisters were sexually abused by their Dad. Jenny didn't beliveve that she was good enough for Forrest. She felt that she was dirty and Forrest was clean. That's why she kept leaving him.

People often miss out on the fact that in the scene in Jenny’s dorm, she sexually assaulted him - an instance where someone who was abused goes on to abuse someone else. I’ve grown up with this movie and probably seen it 50 times, but it hits a lot harder when you’re a parent to an autistic child.

the book was written by 3 old guys from Alabama, as a fictional layering of the 3 of their lives. Most of the movie was shot in Varneville, and Charlestown South Carolina (boat scenes).
