Everyone should be more like Forrest, I appreciate that you recognized that. To add the scene with him at Jenny's grave was one of the first filmed in the movie, that's a testament to Tom Hanks acting ability. He had barely developed the voice.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for responding to Jenny with empathy and understanding. I’ve seen so many reactors disparage her and treat her like a villain, and it always hurts as someone who relates a lot to her story. I originally came here for your IWTV reactions, but I stayed for your compassion and emotional intelligence. I wish you a lovely day, and a wonderful new year.

The Watergate scandal was a major political scandal in which the administration of President Richard Nixon (which resigned because of it) attempted to cover up a break-in at the Watergate hotel in Washington (To spy on political opponents iirc) Forrest was invited by Nixon to stay at the Watergate Hotel, where he saw people with flashlights in another room of the complex, outside of his window. Assuming that their lights had gone out due to a loss of power, he called the Watergate office to tell them about it, and security guard Frank Wills responds, implying that Forrest set the stage for the scandal to be discovered.

@mausilw

I think part of why jenny was so scared to be with him is because he’s vulnerable and she felt like it would be taking advantage of him, the way her dad did as a child. Plus she didn’t feel worthy of pure love like he had for her. I feel so terrible for jenny.

Exactly. I think most people don't realize how triggering it must have been for her to sleep with Forrest. She wanted him to know she loved him and she showed it to him in the way that she had been conditioned to, not because he needed or wanted physical intimacy.

skimming the comments, it looks like a lot of people already touched on some of the historical events in the movie, so i'll share my favorite fact about the making of this movie instead: the accent adult forrest uses is the same accent as the actor young forrest had in real life. tom hanks sat with the little boy and just asked him questions and talked a lot to get to hear how he spoke and to memorize his mannerisms. he preferred that than some generic movie version southern accent.

@ She’d been a Beatles fan since she was a teen. During that cultural milestone of their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show (the day Beatlemania started, 2/9/64), when there were all those girls screaming in the audience-my mom was screaming in her living room watching their performance, and my Nana came running in thinking there was an emergency! 😄 The Beatles were the emergency. And with great respect for the other three members, John was on another level. The way he used his fame to try to make the world a better place was on another level. Listen to his song John Sinclair sometime-you’ve probably never even heard of it-Lennon was a radical activist and a genuine threat to the system because of his incredible, Taylor Swift level popularity and the fact that he was constantly using it to incite the working class to direct action. Rest In Power, John. 🕯️💔

The music in this is the soundtrack of many of our lives. All the hits. And Forrest affects all historic events- like giving Lennon the words to “ Imagine”. Gary Senise- Lt Dan- has been a massive advocate for veterans over the decades. He has a band, too, called “ Lieutenant Dan”! Forrest inadvertently called the cops on President Nixon’s illegal Watergate complex break-in to subvert the Democrats. Nixon was found guilty and resigned.

I say this every time because it hits me every time. My mom looked exactly like Sally Field when we were kids and were convinced she had a secret movie career. I sincerely cried when she died. And that's all I have to say about that...Tom Hanks is absolutely brilliant, even when playing a local idiot. When LT. Dan comes with his magic legs made from the same material as the space shuttle...the next year they were in Apollo 13th together! Jenny isn't the villain as some suggest to Forrest, she was a victim. One of the most hilarious, clever, heartfelt films ever.

Loved your reaction to this one, and still had to watch it again, knowing it was a reupload. Not sure if I got to comment this on the other one, but the floating feather I like to interpret as Jenny's presence, since when they were children, she had that prayer that God turn her into a bird, so she could fly far, far far away from here. The floating feather the proof that she was there with Forrest as he lived his experience and then at the end with little Forrest. Jenny passing was the bird flying away, the feather in his favorite book the direction of his love, first floating down to him on the bench when Jenny decided to stay, and their love together, then when it falls from the book, and floats away, when Forrest vocalizes his love for his son. Thoughts?

Jenny died of hepatitis. So many hate her because she didn't love Forest mutually. She did not have to do anything. Many don't acknowledge she was broken. No mother, sexually abusive father and separated from her siblings while young. Jenny was in pain. Real pain. The scene where Forrest talks at Jenny's grave is one of the best scenes in cinema to me. And it's what won him that second Oscar. I love your reviews. 😊

I think Jenny died of Aids. Think of the time period. The Aids epidemic was running rampant and Jenny was a drug addicted, sexually liberated woman of the 70's/80's. Doctors at the time were calling it the "Gay plaque" because it was an unknown disease spread through sexual contact and needle use that was ravishing the gay community without a cure in sight.

That's a rural Mississippi accent. While the movie takes place mostly in Alabama, the boy who played the young Forrest was from MS. Hanks had studied and learned the rural Alabama accent, but when the boy they picked to play his younger self was from MS and had that accent, they realized it would be too difficult to teach someone that you a new accent, so Hanks learned his accent instead. The give away is that both people who play Forrest pronounce the usually silent G such as in singing. Both Forrests Sing-ging, which is not how native Alabamans speak.
@browniewin4121
@browniewin4121 Ай бұрын
George Wallace was a strict segregationist Alabama governor. The assassination attempt when he was running for president left him a paraplegic. Over time his views changed and he no longer supported segregation.. In the late 50's and early 60's there was military conscription in the US. When drafted the term of service was 2yrs. The man being depicted leading the antiwar protest wearing the American flag shirt is Abbie Hoffman who cofounded the Youth International Party and was a defendant in the Chicago Eight (later Chicago Seven) trial. The Black Panther Party is responsible for starting public school breakfast programs but were undermined by the head of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover, but then it got taken up as a government program, over his objection. That was the Watergate Hotel and the scandal that forced Nixon to resign was because it came out that he knew members of his reelection campaign broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters with the intent of planting listening devices, and many other crooked dealings by his administration were revealed and that he had lied about his knowledge and involvement. Sally Field who played Forrest's mother is only 10yrs older than Tom Hanks. In the long shots of running that is Tom Hank's brother. Forest Gump is entirely fictional and it's just for fun to attribute all these historic things to his influence. All of Tom Hanks performances are excellent, but one I don't think anyone else could have pulled off so believably is the character in Big (1988). For really early Tom Hanks see Splash (1984), and some of my favorite movies of his are, Dragnet (1987), The Burbs (1989), Joe Versus the Volcano (1990), Philadelphia (1994), Apollo 13 (1995), That Thing You Do (1996), The Green Mile (1999), Road to Perdition (2002), Catch Me If You Can (2002), The Terminal (2004), Saving Mr. Banks (2013), A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood (2019).

Not just the references and the history, but the people and their struggles. I wish I had understood it sooner, how Forrest's outlook carries him through such troubled waters. This is the quintessential “American” movie, from the lessons, to the imagery, to the history... Forrest is basically how I imagined the “American Dream” when I was growing up: You don’t have to be perfect, but if your morals are strong and you fully commit yourself to whatever you do, everything will work itself out. It’s a shame reality isn’t like the movies, but it’s still a beautiful thing to see play out.

1. The music royalties alone must have cost a small fortune🤑🤑🤑🤑 2. Kurt Russell did the voice for Elvis. 3. Typically, boats/ships need a female name. 4. Having gotten his degree Forrest would have gone into the Army as an officer like Lt. Dan. Not a recruit. His ASVAB kills that. 5. He actually saved Lt Dan twice. Once in the field and again to get him out of his post war funk and Dan turned his life around. 6. Normally an enlisted Army person would be fully aware of his/her separation date. 5. Jenny did indeed give him the best gift ever (it wasn't the shoes)😈 8. Jenny died of Hep-C from dirty needles when she was in Caliphony.. 9. It's ironic that Lt. Dan told the guys to take care of their feet because he loses his. 10. At the rally Forrest says, "In Vietnam, sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that." 11. You have had a ride through recent US history and culture. From Elvis, John Lennon, Abby Hoffman to Vietnam and Watergate. Even the jogging craze of the 70's. About the only thing left out was streaking. 12. Observation: Bubba's not a small dude. Forrest carries him with a bullet in his ass. 13. Sometimes, I guess there're just aren't enough rocks"🥺 14. Haley Joel Osmentt/Forrest Jr. steals the show in "The Sixth Sense" with Bruce Willis.🤩 15. Often when he's finishing a segment about death, he ends it by saying "That's all I have to say about that" 16 Keep in mind if Jenny wasn't wasting her life seeking men like her father and was with Forrest he/we wouldn't have had this

This is based on a book; author from Alabama, my state. (Obviously) Many miss the point of the book/movie. It's not about Forest the character. It's about a generation. Each of the characters are types that all experienced profound societal events and changes. So much was shocking and transformative. The war hero, the veteran who comes back cripple and hopeless, the drugged out hippie. Our 3 main characters show this period of American/Alabama history and the difficult journey for each in such confusing times. And through Forrest, we see the events: Assassinations, culture, hurricanes, war, civil rights, political turmoil, etc. Through Jenny we see hippie and Panthers and drug culture, which was new for this generation. It was so much in such a short period. So the book/movie explores the question of whether these events are determined by fate or by chance. And so is Forrest's presence/experience of these events fate/preordained, or chance/random. Remember Lt. Dan said Forrest had cheated him of his destiny. So he believed in the fate answer, but his fate was stolen from him. The conclusion of the author is both fate and chance determine a person's life experiences and society events. By the way, the movie is clearly hinting that Jenny died of AIDS. But the book author said she died of hepatitis B, another virus they had trouble identifying during this time and which is transmitted by sharing needles.

Amen to the remarks about how to treat neurodivergent people. I have a son with moderate-to-severe autism and it is not an easy life for him to begin with, but especially with how a-holes treat him.

Friend! You've never seen Forrest Gump?? I love that for you. This is a movie I wish I could see again for the first time. I already suggested this to FoxTaco but another good movie, if you haven't seen it, is District 9. I think you'd enjoy it. Lots to ponder over during the movie and after it ends!!
