However, countries with populations and industries that are more resistant to leaving ICE for electric cars have seen the writing on the wall and are now adapting and will make great progress to catch up within the next few years. In the most optimistic scenario, assuming the trend towards protectionist policies doesn’t too dramatically change current interconnected global commerce, tariffs could be used just in the short term to give domestic car companies a chance to catch up - some breathing room in the face of China’s EV industry’s largely unforeseen incredible growth. A tariff is not the same as a ban, which I doubt would happen as long as Chinese car companies comply with trade, safety, PRIVACY and other regulations, and necessary processes

American, German, and Japanese governments subsidizes their car companies as much, if not, more than Chinese car makers. The only difference is Chinese car companies actually use that money to do R&D making their tech better and improving efficiency. While other car makers use that money to pay off investors. For example, about 2 years ago the American government announced a massive $100 billion dollar subsidy to American car makers to improve their EV tech. Instead of adding that money to their R&D Funds to improve their tech, they ended up paying massive dividends to shareholders the very next quarter. Their R&D budgets changed very little. Western countries won't be catching up to Chinese EVs anytime soon because their industrial/political system has and will continue to ensure that ICE vehicles remain. Unless you think they can or even want to beat the all powerful multi-billion dollar Oil Lobby(Which is why they got behind in the first place). The West are capitalists. Which means their companies would rather shell up in their home markets and depend on protectionism rather than spend the massive amounts of money and take on huge R&D risks trying to compete with the Chinese. The goal of capitalists is to maximize quarterly profits, not to spend Billions fighting China in some long term competition that won't pay off for a long time, if at all.
