Forro in the Dark w/ David Byrne - Asa Branca

Forro is a native music of Northern Brazil. Roughly translated it means 'love' and/or 'for all'.
The music was brought to us over at Nublu, the Ave. C music hub of the LES, by band leader Mauro Refosco nearly 5 years ago. It was then this traditional folk-styled music of their homeland reached the ears of the New York nightlife. What started as a Brazilian birthday party became a sweat inducing dance party that has lasted almost every week of now 4 years! Now with the launch of Nublu Records, and special appearances from famous musicians including David Byrne, Miho Hatori (of Ciba Matto), and Brazilian songstress Bebel Gilberto, Forro in the Dark is steadily introducing the genre across the globe. This video featuring David Byrne was produced & directed by one of the many great artists we house over at Nublu, Karina Correa.
They are currently touring and have national dates coming throughout the next month.

Forro means "For All." Nothing more. I knew a man who visited Fortaleza, the ground zero for Forro. He was a merchant sailor and his ship was shot out from under him off the coast during WWII. It was during this time that the sailors and such would give parties and invite the locals....Thus the term, "for all" was born. So goes the story.

nicely done! thank you for keeping forró alive and for divulging it for an international audience. it is amazing how forró´s thematic is so universal - this becomes obvious when it is sang in English. Asa Branca could very well have been written by Dylan of Armstrong or someone like that. It is also revitalizing for forró to be filtered by NYers. It would be interesting a luiz gonzaga songbook all in english.

Forró doen't means "love" or "for all", but it cames from portugalician "forbodó/forrobodó" which came from french "faux-bourdon". That is it. Besides the description, the music is good in english, but I'd rather keep it on portuguese that's more a musical language for its vowels.

Forró means ONLY "for all". Because in colonial times, the great buanas had a place where people could dance. That place was for everyone, "for all". Not understanding the leanguage, the brazilians called it "forró" and it became the name of musical style.

Não existe música 'Forró'. Forró é somente o formato de conjunto tendo por base sanfona, zabumba e triângulo em que se toca música de baile 'forrobodó'. Asa Branca é baião.

I've loved this song for a long time (first heard it by Joao Gilberto) and this version is original and fun! I missed Forro in the Dark when they were in Chicago last year, but I'll catch them for sure next time. David Byrne fits in so well with them!
