You could not get more arbitrary when it comes to hair length. Age of consent IS somewhat arbitrary but setting it to 18 works decently well at protecting people from being taken advantage of. If the 17/18 system is bad, suggest a better alternative. the guy is wrong and its why many muslims dislike self proclaimed Sheikh who often like to appear very religious by being a hardliner but by doing so often misrepresent islam in even more hardline way then its actually is. the Hadith about imitation is more about intention then action and about religious custom then everyday life or general thing, like wearing shoes, shirts etc.. islam never asked ppl to stop adopting styles for themselves and just stagnate to what they had 1400 years ago, this more about religious custom like xmas and other religious trend which might be adopted by some, its more if u gonna adopt all this custom from this religion then why don't u join it? in what way these custom gonna bring u closer to islamic religious custom? and how much are u willing to risk from this to happen over time. this more about making religious habit and custom purely islamic without lighting it morph slowly with other non-islamic stuff. the second about not trying to be girly, again this more of about intention vs usefulness then ur perceived girly not girly, for example Mohammad himself had a long hair at least to to above his shoulder, lets say u have a long hair, long hair is annoying and cause many issue, what common ways to fix these issue? oh i know pony tails which like how most girl solve these issues, u having something that u perceived as girly doesn't have to be girly, pony tails isn't a girly thing by itself its functional thing for long hair which is often used by girl for those function. with marines line about not about Qaza but about imitation, this how armies often cut because its functional and easy also don't want soliders to focus on their hair or even their look.
