Love Forsythia as it gets us all hyped up for Spring and the new growing season. I have some sitting in a beautiful vase with some forced daffodils and tulips. This one looks great, thanks David! 💐💐💐

Sounds wonderful, thanks for mentioning that👍. When we drive around neighborhoods and see all the neglected plants still putting on a decent, uplifting display, it is a testament to the toughness and reliability of Forsythias. And, when plant breeders are able to perfect outstanding selections like this one, it only makes them easier and better to enjoy😁.

I wish someone would take Forsythia Northern Gold and breed it with these large flowered varieties to extend the range into Zone 4.

We will pass this on to some of our breeder friends and see what kind of "wizardry" they can come up with. Meanwhile, since this one was bred in the cold climate (of the former) East Germany, it may be hardier than it is currently rated at (Zone 5). Sometimes, because plants are only trialed in one zone (in this case Zone 5), that's the information that they go with. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about subscribing, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), it will turn up automatically in your feed. And, as you find our videos helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that helps other people find the information as well.

how hard should you prune it back? I have a very large 20 year old 6 foot tall bush and also some new bushes I planted last year that are only a few feet tall.

This one can be cut back HARD! It flowers very well on the new stems, so taking it back every year to 8-12 inches will encourage it to make strong, upright stems that you will have noticed in the video are crammed with flowers. Conventional Forsythias, are usually thinned by taking out about a third of the older stems (on a 3 year cycle). Older plants like your venerable specimen, can be thinned more aggressively, and if it is overgrown, ungainly and contains lot of congested, old, unshapely, woody stems, some people (like myself), would be tempted to cut back it back hard (possibly foregoing flowers for a year or so), to start off again with vigorous, productive and a more shapely plant. All of this would be done immediately after flowering finishes 💪😉👍💚
