All of these emplacements were no longer active by 1943. 5:00 a six inch gun was here. These were medium sized guns compared to massive 16 inch rifles used elsewhere. The rooms with fireplaces were for the gun crews. The windows were for communicating between the munitions storage and commanding officers in the gun crew quarters. 9:40 the gun there was a six inch rifle on 360 degree mounts. Battery Hawley was modified in 1941 to hold these 360 degree rifles. The tower was used for assisting guns on Peaks Island with aim. 14 towers were built for peaks island and this was the most northern one. The tower is open the first Saturday of every month and is the only tower in New England with on observation floor.

That's great to know I was wondering about the tower but I wasn't sure if they opened it anymore, so thank you.

Look at that: no graffiti, no wantan vandalism....and awesome family time. A gem in all regards.

I know there was very little vandalism and it was honestly really nice to just see a persevered fort without it being defaced.

Not easy to find. Way out in the boondocks on the coast of Maine. Well worth the trip because fort Pelham is just before you get to Baldwin.

Yes you are not kidding. I have gone to Popham many many times and had no idea that this historic site was just waiting in the woods. I was very thankful for coming across it.

It is an amazing experience. Come at night. Just carry a stick for the spider webs in the back tunnels.

That is such a great idea. I think that would totally change the experience.

And that is supposed to be a military fort, in Maine, in the middle of nowhere and it was built during the civil war? Fireplaces and finished floors? Look at what you just filmed and then think about what you are saying. That is evidence of an abandoned- highly advanced - civilization. You keep talking about cannons...what cannons? Seriously, those large round steel inserts into the stone...did you look at that steel? The whole structure? Before you even say it was a turntable for the cannons just stop...please. To say that is a military fort built by soldiers, for soldiers, DURING THE CIVIL WAR, is absolutely ridiculous. I would challenge anyone to even try and build the simplest of the structures you filmed with the precision, the workmanship, the design elements, with what we have today and do it using the stone they used. Think about even attempting such an undertaking. And this is supposed to be a military fort built during the civil war? Not a chance.
