Professor!, in an interaction of a photon with a free stationary electron, is it possible to predict the scattering angle of the photon? Or to predict a probability distribution of this scattering angle? Predict it only in terms of the initial state of the system.

Because of Heisenberg uncertainty principle we couldn't dedect position and momentum of an electron simultaneously. Thus we can not predict before collision of electron and photon.

The energy of the photon hf is observed completely by the electron in photoelectric effect. But in Compton effect the photon transfers only part of its energy to electron and scatters with less energy. Doesn't seem contradictory? Could you please explain the physics behind this..
@Pavan_Gaonkar Жыл бұрын
I think the reason is the if you want to take out the electron from the atom you need to provide a certain amount of energy .. otherwise it won't get out of the atom.. but in collision there is no such restriction..
@Abhi-mu2cy Жыл бұрын
@@Pavan_Gaonkar I too think the same infact in photoelectric effect photon's energy must cross certain threshold energy but in Crompton scattering there is no such conditions
@Abhi-mu2cy Жыл бұрын
But the question arises that for high energy photon Crompton scattering is dominant so which one happens photoelectric effect or Crompton scattering? (The photon energy is above the threshold energy)
@maazsarfaraz2269 Жыл бұрын
If you remember in P.E.E we have a work function of emiter and to emitt electrons energy of incident photon should be greater ,but here there is no such condition , and we also have x and gamma rays that cause comptons effect ,it s that only x and gamma rays cause comptons effect

Terrific lecturer. Explains topic very well, clearly and concise. I do have a question. How can a scattered electron obtain a velocity of the speed of light by colliding with a single photon?
@rajeshvaghela125 ай бұрын
i think electron would not have speed of light, or if it does then it must be moving around nucleus at that speed, photon just give it other direction while colliding. in fact in current, electron just move by micro or nano meter, it is wave which travel speed of C

Hi there, I just wondered why many people seem to imply it's the 'hits per second' that counts as 'higher energy' instead of a single wave / photon approach which would be the acceleration curve of the wave on the electron. Frequency is not a good term to use in conjunction with the photoelectric effect to me as it locks in the idea of multiple waves needed to free an electron, instead of one short wave = very fast electron acceleration.. I know it's a convention and makes sense from a wave beam / oscillating system point of view but not photonically. More photon hits should produce more electron photons if the incoming photons are above the atom's energy threshold.

This is a nice mathematical shortcut, but unfortunately for Compton, we know that electrons can not absorb fractions of photons. The math might work out right, but the physics here can not be correct.
@FortheLoveofPhysics3 ай бұрын
Electron absorbed portion of the photon energy, like a ball absorbs portion of energy upon collision
@Naomi_Boyd3 ай бұрын
@@FortheLoveofPhysics Yes, that was Compton's theory, but as I said, we know that can not happen. Also, you use a stationary electron for an example, and we know that can not happen either. The billiard analogy is like Bohr's planetary model of the atom. It works as a mathematical tool, but it is not an accurate model of reality.
