It’s not completely random, so if you really want to see the sword pulled it’s more than likely going to be a child. Another way is going right after a dude who tried really hard. It’s comedic for them the release the sword after a strong guy tries. So you can attempt to go RIGHT after a strong guy and possibly be chosen for comedic timing. Mainly children though.

The button is located inside the castle on the second floor. There is a window with a clear view of the sword. You cannot see cast members in the window. Disney would never just have a cast member nearby to ruin the illusion. You will never see the cast member. It is the cast member that oversees character pop ins (castle), the sword in the stone, the castle walkthrough, and the wishing well.

I have been an annual pass holder for many of my child and adult years. I also know several cast members, both past and present. And I have done my research, as I am a Disney fan. I am 42 by the way so yes, I have spent that much time at Disneyland over 4 decades.

I just decide who is worthy or not, and sometimes I take a long restroom break towards the evening. That's why no one can pull it then.
