I’ve always said that Queen Latifah is the best representative of a confident Black woman we’ve seen in film/tv. I think she’s also uniquely rare when it comes to heavier set Black women. In NONE of her roles has she chased after a man out of desperation. In fact, the ball has always been in her court. Kadijah James stayed with a fine ass roster, Leslie Wright had the choice to take Scott back or not, Cleo had a BADDDD biddie on her arm, I mean the list goes on & on. I just love her.

This movie has always been one of my favorite romantic comedies; so glad you reviewed it! But I've always thought the Scott character was way too naive/dumb as hell to be a NBA player in his thirties and not detect Morgan's game. In real life Scott would be able to spot the Morgans of the world coming from a mile away; his mama certainly did. To me Scott's stupidity towards Morgan might have been believable if he had been a rookie.

Shit! I also got hit with the opposite… I’ve met multiple guys approaching with the flirtations, yet (surprisingly) being very straightforward about their *intentions*. I have one guy not so subtly say he ONLY wanted a physical relationship, not even a ‘friends with benefits’ kind; he only wanted to “date” (as in wine and dine, nothing else) if he could get some in the end. Another guy, during a date (a first date getting to know the man mind you), was bragging about his pullout game and how he doesn’t need Condoms; then has the nerve to do a call over a weekend later for some casual play. Guess I’m not that type of woman who enjoys flings (just meeting a man, no matter how he looks, doesn’t instantly make me want to drop my pants for him), but I keep meeting men who do. 🤦🏾‍♀️

I remember not understanding the themes of this movie and just viewing them as entertainment. Now as an adult, I don’t like what it’s trying to tell us. Scott had a lukewarm attraction to Leslie and chose her more feminine presenting and “conventionally attractive” cousin over her as soon as he had the opportunity. Sure he was under a false impression but after that facade was shattered what was the reason to take her back? She showed her true colors unapologetically. She was a gold digger who was too damaged to love period. She only came back once she was sure he was back to being relevant. He did Leslie so dirty and then tried to pretend that’s not what he did. Leslie could’ve done so much better. Any man or woman would’ve been lucky to have a genuine person like her in their lives. Too bad no one could see it except her father.

Yay! I am so glad you are covering this one. My mom and I watch this all the time and has not gotten old yet. Count how many times I yelled at the screen, “how come after that instant connection you fall for her cousin” so many times. Glad he made the right choice in the end. Also, not people acting like Queen f’ing Latifah as not beautiful. Are you kidding me? I am glad Morgan and Leslie made up in the end and stayed good friends. I mean, they are related, but glad they are able to get back to where they started. Also, once Morgan did see how much Scott and Leslie liked each other, she backed off. I appreciated that. Scott and Leslie are a favorite couple of mine and do agree that they had amazing chemistry in a mature and friendly way.

Loved your input on the movie haha especially the never ending commentary because it is definitely all of us when we watch those parts. FYI: Morgan was Leslie’s god-sister not cousin. Still family just not blood related.

25:24 what bothers me about this movie is…. She’s 100% right. The reason he broke up with Morgan is because she revealed her hands too early when getting back together and gave Scott a chance to finally wise up to the bull. He picked Morgan first cause that’s who he wanted. On one hand I’m rooting for the main leads to get together but on the other hand I want Leslie to leave his butt behind because how dare he? She forgave him too easily and I was not satisfied. I was still angry with Scott 😭

Watching this as an adult, Morgan and others like her dont look at the big picture. There's nothing wrong with wanting to find someone who is financially well off. But most people who are rich/wealthy usually are with someone that has something going for themselves (career, money, etc.). There are cases where people like Morgan succeed, but for the most part, its not often. Leslie was a better partner because they were equally yoked and she was driven in her career, interests, and had confidence. Looks only get you so far and Morgan was coasting on that too much.

I love how when we are shown what's inside Scott's secret room, we see both Leslie and Morgan's reaction to it. Leslie was interested in hearing Scott play the piano, but Morgan asked him if she could close the door as he played. She showed no interest in what he enjoyed. Morgan ain't ish!

This movie showed the switch up Scott did was the result of a heart broken person not dealing with those feelings and being confused when the person that broke your heart comes back in your life. It also didn’t help that Morgan was good at manipulating people to get her way. Now I still think it was a dumb move to allow Leslie to leave so easily but he needed to deal with his feelings for Morgan before he could be the person Leslie needed him to be.

I have watched this movie so many times!! I absolutely love Queen Latifah! She doesn’t play when it comes to portraying black women in the dating world and I love it! In regard to this movie I absolutely hated her mom….her daddy was literally my favorite character. Morgan was true to herself but just for that reason she would’ve never known I was going to Scott McKnight’s house. I also feel like Leslie should’ve said something from jump cause it was clear she liked him and was lying to herself. O and I love Scott’s agent…he was so messy lol he knew Scott would feel some type of way about Leslie not working for the Knicks.
