I have a feeling that the Alpinestars designers got carried away with their boners, incorporating too many 'great ideas!'. I have hiking jackets with 8 pockets and their zippers, seemingly making the jacket more useful, but in the end adding too much, little used, complexity and weight. There was a jacket made years ago from FirstGear which was effectively plastic chain mail. I personally crashed it on gravel at 55mph and was more than impressed with its durability having not worn through. It is also a giant vent since it is chain mail so it is very cool for the summer. I am not sure why they do not make jackets like that anymore.

@@robbackstrom3365 - One of the things I cannot stand about living in the middle of nowhere is that there are no shops where you can actually try these jackets on and feel them for yourself. At $450, that's quite a gamble to buy online only to find out you hate it. So I need to ask you: How does it feel to wear that Klim Induction jacket? Is it really cool in hot weather? How is your mobility in it?
@robbackstrom3365
@robbackstrom3365 Жыл бұрын
@@vasprofessional1094 They fit pretty true to size. I'm 6 foot one and 200-210, and I wear an L. The induction jacket flows air VERY well. The mesh fabric is quite substantial; some might say it feels over-engineered. It's expensive but built to that higher level. It has that warranty where they will replace it for free if you crash the jacket, as long as you can prove it with an incident report. I can attest. Since then, I've got an additional Klim jacket, the Marrakesh, which is slightly less aggressive (smaller mesh) and super comfortable - it might also be a lower price.

Yeah I had to rewind as I thought I heard '1 sec at 45kph' wrong... I get that a lot of falls are low speed, but that's pretty low. Personally, I'd rather sweat it out with higher protection focused on where the highest risk speed I normally ride at. You may only be on the highway 10% but that 10% will mess you up if you come off with an 'A' jacket. Maybe I'm missing how these work in real life? The exposed protection on the Astars also better be made of Teflon or when that grabs your going to get your limbs ripped off. All about probabilities, and only you know what they are but these seem to be more 'false sense' of security...or better than a T shirt. Which sadly, would still be an improvement, so I guess that might be the goal.

One had loops into your belt (somewhat common) while many other zip together with pants (very common) though I did not see that feature on any of these. Finally, most street crashes are head first so the jacket will not rise up.

Great review! But it still amazes me that jackets are made to be road camo with no or little fluorescent panels for visibility. Legitimate research shows flourecent vests improve roadside construction workers, and can be improved 20 to 40 percent! That's going to be saved lives and significant injuries. Much more than snake oil pads and fabric.
@cmdrgunslinger5955
@cmdrgunslinger5955 2 жыл бұрын
The problem is target fixation. High vis construction vests tend to be in clusters. The wide angle "mass" tends to prevent "target lock". Single High vis acts like the pothole you hit despite staring at it to avoid. I can't tell you the number of times I or a coworker had to leap out of the way because some cager was fixated on us.
@HvV8446
@HvV8446 2 жыл бұрын
@@cmdrgunslinger5955 target fixation can be a nightmare. Both for me and some cager, if i don’t look where i *want* to go, im lying in a ditch. If a cager fixates on me, im kissing his hood. My jacket and pants are black, but they have some decent reflective stripes and patches (3M, matte gray normally, but really bright when hit by light). I’d rather have to ride like i’m invisible, than stand out and cause some cager to swerve into me. Jacket is a Richa Infinity 2 and pants are Richa Colorado trousers.

I get your point, but there are 2 problems I can see. First, lots of people just won't buy hi-viz. It's out there, in helmets, jackets, pants you name it. I've seen the same studies you mention.. but I have a red\black helmet, a black jacket (with reflective piping to be sure) and a black bike. I'm not in any way the most stylish person out there, but I can't bring myself to buy a yellow helmet. Second, you have to wonder... if people miss the chrome and lights, along with the spectacle of someone sitting higher than the roof of the car on a somewhat unusual vehicle... will painting it yellow it really help?

Hi vis' might be great when you're a "human" on the side of the road, or even a human with a GREAT BIG FLAG POST in the middle of it... When you're on a motorcycle, you're no longer a human, just another obstacle that's smaller and less threatening than all the other moving obstacles... Nope... I'll wear the leather and guards to up my chances IF I take the spill, and then ride like I want NOBODY to have a clue I was even ever there. In any case, you can be THE brightest colored and shiniest thing on the street, and it won't do you a damn bit of good if the "other guy" doesn't even bother looking... ;o)
@sivansharma5027
@sivansharma5027 2 жыл бұрын
Replying to everyone here, The main point of high vis is literally in the name! To be highly visible. I know we all say we want to ride like we're invisible, but the reality is that you take for granted that people (drivers and pedestrians) can see you at so many points of potential interaction. Just think of how many driveways you pass every second without actually slowing down or being ready to do an emergency stop in time if someone pulled out. Or if someone pulled out in front from a side road, or an intersection where they were supposed to give way. Or even the dozens of parked cars you pass every second with the assumption that they are actually parked and not about to pull out. Think about it, you don't actually ride around with your fingers and feet ready on the brakes nearly as often as you should be if you were trully riding like you were invisible... But that's ok because people DO see us. They hear us and see us, but what's most important is that they see when we need them to see us. People often look only for cars in their mirrors and/or quick glances. By wearing something highly visible, you are trying to say "hey look at me! I'm not what you were looking for, not what you were expecting to see, but at least you know I'm here now so you don't have an excuse to pull out in front without care" If you just wear black, people will still see you most of the time just fine, but in those crucial moments where they're just having a quick glance, or looking through a dirty or foggy mirror for someone that isn't shaped like you... If your head light doesn't happen to be at the right height to catch their mirrors etc. As for fixation, well it wouldn't be an issue if more bikers wore high vis and it was just normal :P but really, the majority of accidents don't occur in situations where fixation is even possible to occur. As above, a riders biggest issue is being the wrong shape; a much smaller and less visible shape that also kinda looks like a pedestrian. Also, people will fixate on you just because you're on motorbike... Or if you have learner or provisional plates... Or if you're in something fancy/uncommon, like a Ferrari or trike etc. I don't think it's that big an issue tbh...
