Love the mitre saw station (it’s beautiful and damn I love hickory, I’m building a solid hickory vanity soon) and the outrageous big plywood storage! I’d loved to have seen the full build but I get it! That’s a lot to film and you needed to get it done. One thing you ought to try with your swing out ply and wood storage cabinets are heavy-duty gate spring loaded wheels! Wood Whisperer uses them for his massive plywood carts and what’s so nice is the spring loaded wheels adapt to floor depth change. You might be fine, your floors look pretty flat but my floors have a hideous crack and deep downward slant. Basically anyone can do a hinged ply cart if they use these spring loaded gate wheels

So I was watching again, I like to rewatch favorites every once in a while so I don’t forget ideas and anyways you mentioned using water based poly on the hickory, I’ve finished the frame or structure of my hickory vanity and now just have the solid wood drawers and doors and I’m basically done but I went with Osmos Polyx in Raw since it’s a finish I can work with in the future incase of damage (it really does reapply no problem and without any lines or noticeable changes since I missed some wood glue when finishing) and it’s now my absolute favorite for hickory or really any light hardwood! It brought out depths of color and tones I didn’t see until applying it, then I did the second coat with Osmos Polyx in satin clear and it gave the raw a bit more life or warmth without yellowing whatsoever. Incase you build with more hickory, osmo Polyx in raw first and clear second leaves a phenomenal finish and it does seem more protective than I’ve heard from others yet you can still feel the grain and again I lightly sanded the missed glue and reapplied it and you can’t see where I goofed so anyways keep building we’re watching and thanks again! Ohh and you weren’t kidding about hickory being difficult to tool! I used a rabbeting bit for the back of my vanity and that was interesting but it worked out in the end. Climb cutting worked the best where the grain ripped out and that was with 1/8” depth cuts each time. The other major issue I had was using mechanical fasteners! Pocket holes… forget it, I broke sooooo many screws into the wood when installing the bottom which was my stupid move avoiding another joinery method worth time lol so I didn’t attempt the nail gun but it makes for some stunning joints. I finally tried and succeeded pretty well for my first time with bridle joints and half laps. Such an underutilized wood for sure

Great video! The cabinets look amazing. Do you have any issues keeping your sawstop slider square? I've had mine about a year and I rarely use it because it's so easily knocked out of square and the detents have too much play...
@FortressFineWoodworks
@FortressFineWoodworks 4 ай бұрын
I agree with that. It's not actually slop in the detents, it's slop in the pin housing (on mine at least) I adjusted mine so that when I slide it on, I pull the right side toward me with a little bit of pressure then lock it in. This ensures that I'm getting 90 every time. It took some time to adjust it to do this perfectly every time, but it's worth it

I think it's because we can make things how we want them. So it gets... a little out-of-hand at times. Thanks for watching!

You have a funny relationship with precision. On one hand you appear to hold precision as a standard to maintain and on the other you make comments that diminishs holding a high standard calling it OCD or perfectionism as if you need to apologize for being true to your own standards. So is it ok to have high standards and not apologize for having them? I think being true to whoever you are being is maintaining integrity. Anyway, if you don't your peace of mind is out the window as you acknowledge so the question becomes does peace hold more value than looking good if you have to trade one for the other?

I think both can be true. My ocd and perfectionism can exist, as well as high standards. And being honest and transparent about what I'm experiencing is integrity.

There’s nothing wrong with working up to your standards no matter how high and even having unattainable ideals is ok. I have them too and I suspect so does everyone else. My issue is with the baggage that comes with the labeling OCD and perfectionism. For me, when I engage with doing things and those terms arise, I then feel guilty as if I’m doing something I shouldn’t be doing. It becomes something I have to hide to a degree as if there is something wrong or broken about me that should be fixed somehow. It certainly isn’t something to celebrate! I get that sharing those practices in a diminishing way may seem honest but there is something untrue about self-diminishing. I find discovering that I have been mislabeling things has been a major and exciting form of learning so I suggest considering being true to yourself and the practices you label OCD/perfectionistic might not have the relationship you suggest in your writing.
