@@BaliMystic No, with the exception of software, calling yourself an "engineer," with no previous work experience, and no bachelor's degree is a fraud. The difference is the fact that they could be sued as part of a civil action, but not a criminal infraction. Software is different as there are old hands like me who have been plying that trade for decades without a specific degree. Plus, software is so loosey-goosey with titles that calling yourself a "software engineer," holds about as much weight as claiming you're the CEO of a company that employs one person: you.

@@BaliMystic i dont think its illegal in the US but there is still a difference between a real engineer and someone who knows alot about engineering. Only certain people had the positions and access to truly see what was actually happening. People tried to speak up and speak out, but Theranos bullied anyone who tried through litigation and threats. If you see the interviews of the guy who ended up being the whistleblower, he said that he could only do it because his family had the ability to afford the legal fees it took to defend against their corporate lawyers. He said he was forced to spend HALF A MILLION dollars in about 6 months. There were apparently several employees who had problems with what they saw and left, but going up against a billion dollar company that can basically ruin your life is just not something most of these people could afford to risk.

Interviewer: "Elizabeth, do you enjoy chewing gum?" Elizabeth: "Gum a is a soft, cohesive substance designed in order to be chewed without being swallowed. Modern chewing gum is composed of gum base, sweeteners, softeners/plasticizers, flavors, colors, and, typically, a hard or powdered polyol coating. Its texture is reminiscent of rubber because of the physical-chemical properties of its polymer, plasticizer, and resin components, which contribute to its elastic-plastic, sticky, chewy characteristics."

Actually Bill Gates was very much a programmer. He did a lot of coding and was the lead code reviewer until other aspects of running Microsoft took up too much of his time. Jobs was not a tech person by any means. But he hired and partnered with engineers. And whether you like or dislike Apple products (then or now), they weren't built or designed to save lives, as Theranos claims to do.
@camplethargic8
@camplethargic8 8 жыл бұрын
+Harrison Brown I interpreted Eric Dew's initial comment to mean Elizabeth Holmes is not a licensed engineer, though she claims to be an engineer in the video. When you countered by pointing out that Steve Jobs and Bill Gates weren't formally trained engineers, and that this suggests the term "engineer" is too narrowly defined, I thought it was germane to point out that Jobs and Gates made their contributions without claiming (to my knowledge) to be engineers, in contrast to Ms. Holmes. The key point of Eric Dew's opener wasn't whether Ms. Holmes has talent sufficient to be considered an engineer in-all-but-the-formal sense, but whether one may accurately refer to oneself as an engineer, if indeed one is not licensed as such. I agree with your point that formal training and licensing isn't the sole measure of talent in engineering, nor many other fields. But, do you see how proclaiming a designation (like "engineer") that is generally understood to imply formal training and licensing, is worthy of a call to account in this context? Would you similarly defend a skilled EMT, who has saved many lives, referring to herself in interviews as a medical doctor, despite no medical degree, and no license? Given the current controversy that surrounds Theranos includes possible deception, I can understand why Eric Dew contradicted Elizabeth Holmes's loose self-proclaiming the "engineer" descriptor. However, I cannot fathom where Mr. Dew was headed with his follow-up comment.
@camplethargic8

Mike Phalin The opposite (Mariah Carey) is proof positive. In Mariah’s case, she frequented the Whistle Register. While she could achieve those notes, doing so repeatedly over time caused immeasurable wear that manifests in the form of nodules. Holmes will do the same, and as long as she tries to keep up this act, she too will experience vocal nodules. That’s my guess. I imagine when she gets out of the pokie we will all find out if she is still using that baritone and her voice cracks each time she tries to reach those notes.

It's quite entertaining and a little frightening to look at comments about her from several years ago. Everyone seems to have bought in. They thought she was beautiful, charismatic, "hot", and a genius to boot. They wanted to work for her. The SAME VIDEOS are provoking an opposite reaction now, anger and revulsion. There's something going on here we need to pay attention to. It isn't just building up and tearing down, as we do to our idols. She has an energy that is something akin to evil.

Together, we are revolutionary in our approach, committed to appropriately levels of confidence in our product, data and strategy. Copy pasting a reply from a Reddit User "/u/meeblek" about Theranos. Do read it. Preface: I am a med tech and have managed a lab. This looks like bullshit. She's invented a marketing campaign for her lab. Her 'nano-tube' is the exact same thing that already exists, called a 'microtainer' made by BD. These get used in hospitals right now every day. Finger pricks also get done daily, usually on kids. Finger pricks are undesirable samples for the following reasons: 1) Manual manipulation ('milking') the blood out of the finger results in higher chances of hemolysis - which can render the results of many tests invalid. 2) Finger pricks have a higher volume of interstitial fluid in the sample, possibly skewing the results 3) Finger pricks take longer 4) Finger pricks actually hurt more than a needle 5) Finger pricks tend to clot in the tube, a big no-no for CBCs. Modern chemistry and hematology analyzers only use microlitre amounts of serum per test. Every day labs do full chemistry panels on microtainers of blood - so I'm not sure why her system is better. Now cost. I'm sure that in the US testing costs a lot more than in Canada (dat profit) but in my lab the cost of reagents to do a standard panel (electolytes (Na, K, Cl), glucose, kidney function (BUN, Creatinine), liver function (ALP, AST, ALT, Total Bilirubin), automated CBC) would be on the order of $4-6 (and this is in a fairly low volume lab). If a stat sample is delivered to me I can have results back in 15-20 minutes on any modern chemistry analyzer for the above mentioned tests. The reasons we take tubes with 'large' amounts of blood (I put 'large' in quotes because each tube holds about a teaspoon of blood, I could literally take 100s of them out before you'd feel the effects of blood loss) are: 1) It's a better sample - less recollections 2) We have extra in case there is a problem in analysis - less recollections 3) The Dr. can add on more tests if something comes back weird - less recollections 4) The Dr. can order immunoassays or esoteric testing that requires more volume - less recollections Are you seeing a pattern here? The lab does NOT want to be recollecting. It's a waste of your time and a waste of our time. Why not take extra that you're not going to miss in the first place instead of having to come back a second time? Unless she has some breakthrough testing methodologies that require significantly less blood than is currently used. And I don't think some Stanford dropout working in her garage is better able to develop these tests than multibillion dollar diagnostics companies. Trust me, if some company came along with an analyzer that required 10x less sample with no downsides, they would win the entire market and sell billions of dollars of reagents. Of course they'd be doing it if they could. She goes on about 'automated analysis' in her interview a bit, but labs are already HIGHLY automated. The trouble comes from shitty collections (fingerpricks) and shitty delivery times. She mentioned the problems of people not coming to get their bloodwork done because scared of needles - this is a problem, but its a pre-analytic problem that is not going to be solved with a new micro sampling technique. Bullshit.

"I'm an engineer.". LOL All the engineers I know have a college degree in engineering from an accredited university and passed the rigorous licensing examination. This woman didn't even finish college. She's an expert BS artist, however. She doesn't sound particularly smart, either. I'm amazed so many were hoodwinked by her nonsense.
@bitadiomande4771
@bitadiomande4771 3 жыл бұрын
Either hoodwinked or went along for the ride hoping to cash in on that baseless valuation. I'm not sure how innocent the investors really are. You can be conned at the beginning but when you have no interest in the real results or even listening to whistle blowers, it is either gross incompetence or turning a blind eye. Even Shultz seemed to only pay attention to his grandson's claims after the PR became too much and they couldn't hide the story.

It's insane how people let her get away with these long, rambling and ultimately meaningless answers when you get an F in school for doing just that in reports or exams - rightfully so. Basically the bare minimum of what you have to offer seems to be a higher stake in 8th grade than in Silicon Valley.

The fact that she didn’t have anyone with healthcare or a science background pretty much sums up her thought process. She didn’t want real experts calling her con out. Instead she chose folks in other areas who were powerful people meant to draw more people into her con for sake of publicity and getting more investors.

"A) the government, FDA, is making us do one test at a time for approval, but we could do more B) the magazines wrote incorrect facts about us to say we could do 200 tests on one pin prick. But we can do 200.". So, were the magazines wrong or not? Who told them you could do 200? YOU DID. Lies and self-contradictions all to see if obfuscation can keep the public still impressed with you.

I don’t know what the end game was for her, she knew the technology did not work at all. She knew she couldn’t just keep lying forever. Even in this interview she knew that all her lies would be exposed. There was never any way for her to get out of this. The only possible thing she could have done was delay it, and try to take more time to develop it, why she went ahead and sold the product before it worked is beyond me, she knew she was doomed once she put her broken product in customers hands
