Procedure And Formula To Set Up Our Slug Reloads

The Ross type roll crimpers are available at The Reloader's Network. - - For example, we might pick up some Winchester AA HS or Federal Slug empty hulls from the range - Hulls we have not used before for our slug reloads. What are the procedures whereby we can establish column height for best results with our roll crimps or perhaps even a fold crimp...?

The AA HS hull is a great design. I have loaded some up to 8 times in 410 and shot them out of my Governor with great results! Thanks for another fantastic video!

JB - Many lamented Winchester going away from the one piece injection molded hulls, but they have managed to make the AA hulls just as good at lower manufacturing cost. Kudos to Winchester...I've become a believer in the HS hulls as well... Good shootin' to ya, FC

I have always used the classic lee loader for 12G. However, I can definitely see the benefits of those 12g dies for fold crimping. I would regularly have to use super glue to keep mine closed tightly.

Will you have a follow up video on the three piece AA hulls performance? I would appreciate that even if it was very short. I truly have been blessed by your knowledge and your informative presentations. I started reloading over a decade ago because of your videos. I may have shared this before but it was your love of cast bullets that made me get into casting as well. I finally tried powder coating the other day on some .44 Lee 240 grain SWC. It worked out very well. I have had the pleasure of teaching each of my kids casting and reloading. They are all adults now and I just want to thank you for helping me have the confidence to reload and cast.

Thanks for going into detail on roll crimp and also about the different type of hulls for slugs. I do both myself and I do not use that type of slugs . But I always wondering about how much to leave to roll . Now I know thank you .

Nice video and great tips Steve! I've learned so much from you and have done a lot of slug shooting and custom loadings using BPI's Thug Slugs and their DGS Slugs in 12 GA. I'm now trying to replicate the high quality and accuracy of the Remington Accu-Tips and Hornady SST loads in 20 GA for my SAVAGE 220. Prices and lack of inventory for both of these shells make me want to come up with a custom loading using a high-quality bullet perhaps either a Hornady 45 caliber XTP or a Barnes copper. I'm a deer and hog hunter, and I live in Connecticut which is a shotgun-only state. I have some RIO primed hulls in 20 GA, but the boys at BPI insist that you cannot substitute or deviate from the published data which calls for CHEDDITE hulls. I did run into some pressure issues when I loaded some solid copper slugs in 12 GA primed Fiocchi cases, using Green Dot instead of Unique which caused my JC Higgins Model 20 to seize up, and not eject the cases. Had to go to my local gunsmith to remove the expanded cases. Oh Well, maybe you have some thoughts and loads that might replicate these 20 GA loads in a fully rifled barrel. Happy New Year!

Jesse B Outdoors - I have loaded up huge amounts of trap loads - we used to start up the competition season by going to the Concord Range (lots of trap shooting) where they had a store that stocked big time quantities of shotgun primers, hulls, wads and shot. Typical was picking up 4 jugs of Red Dot, a case of wads and 300 pounds of #8 magnum shot (high antimony). Then I'd run my Dillon 950 and fill up a half dozen bins with trap loads - go through 450 of those on a weekend of trap competition in the NorCal League - doesn't include tune up and practice during the week. Since I stopped competing and only shoot trap for fun and social, no longer need to reload as trap loads weren't that expensive. The current atmosphere has changed so I might fire up that 950 once again. - - Loading shotshells is easy - much less involved than loading metallics. However, you have to do your own cost computations vs the amount of shooting you do - trap loads are not as expensive to simply buy factory and availability is not a problem at this time. Many years ago, I bought a large bag of about 200 unfired Winchester AA three piece cases. I loaded up with #4 shot and put them away - promptly forgetting about them. Some 25 ~ 30 year later I came across the "newly loaded" cases stored in several .5 Cal steel ammunition boxes. I thought I'd go to the range and have a bomb up. What I found was that almost all the cases had separated at the pressed on band at the base of the case. I actually found out by accident as after firing the first couple, I had an extraction problem. On investigating the "problem" I discovered the separation and then checked the reminder of the rounds - all wasted!

those russian slugs are good. I when I started reloading them I bought new shells for the perfect fit so I never had to learn any of this. I didn't know there was a step in some shells

I have this setup. Old AA hulls 3 pc, red dot powder, and 8 shot. And lee slug mold. Havent done slug loads. So great vid. What about a shorter wad? Thx fc45/steve -blake

Great video. It's been about 12 years since I've looked into reloading 12 ga slugs (when Winchester discontinued their 2 3/4" Partition Gold saboted 385 grain with +1900 ft/sec.). I still haven't found the components for making these myself. But I'd be curious about both what you're able to get your costs down to make 100, 500 or whatever and performance out to 100 yds and beyond. I really miss the accuracy at extended range of the Partion Gold slugs in my Mossberg 695 and I can't seem to find anything close.

Interesting video. I just started shotshell reloading and based on the info I gathered I purchased Claybuster wads (CB8118-12) for use in Remington and Win AA tapered hulls. Can you load a wad for tapered hulls in a straight wall hull like Federal?

Why are you loading the slow Blue Dot? I think the shotgun needs very fast powder, such as Bullseye. I would be glad about a short answer. Greetings from Germany.

Captain Obvious - Don't have a 00 mold, but have the 000 (they are good for loading in 38 Specials also). The 00 stack better in buckshot loads. The range that allowed buckshot shooting closed up about 4 years ago. The range I currently shoot at doesn't allow buckshot as the tendency is for the target stands to be destroyed by wayward shots. That is the reason I haven't shot any buckshot in the last 4 years. But it sure couldn't hurt to do a reloading video on buckshot... Have a great day, FC

I am very new to this slug loading but have reloaded my own shotshells for many years and I'm trying to learn how to load my own slugs and #00 Buckshot so please excuse any dumb questions I ask like is slug and buckshot loading a lot more difficult than loading shotshells? Is misidentification of a fold crimp on a slug the main problem with fold crimping a slug or is there other dangers to a fold crimped slug that I haven't learned yet? Once I taught my wife how to load #7 1/2 shot I rarely had to load any shells at all to shoot clay pigeons or go rabbit and crow hunting and luckily I bought and still have a few hundred pounds of #5 to #7 1/2 shot, bags and bags of different Claybuster and other brands of wads and a ton of of Blue Dot, Red Dot, Green Dot, 700x and 800x powder and primers along with a good supply of the same needs for pistol and rifle rounds ETA: If it matters I use a Mec Jr. as I have 3 of them

T - Actually, we all wish that the ammo factories would make available their proprietary slugs and wads for reloaders, but they don't do that forcing us to buy their high cost factory slug loads. Printing up or casting the Russian slugs would be the way to go - current supply shortages of the Russian slug molds and wads is putting a crimp on our operations... Have a great day, T... FC
