by Devon Carver: "So a couple of notes that I can share. 1) This was not, repeat not, a pre-version of Edge of the Mists. I can see where the overlap would be, but that's not what this map is about. 2) You would not be wrong to blame Tirzah for the moogle, although in her defense, I don't think she expected the art to get out with the moogle still on it. 3) Because it was Tirzah working on the art, you are correct to say it is awesome. 4) **While there is nothing that says we will bring this map back, there's nothing that says we won't**. If we really wanted to do something silly, we'd put it literally on a table somewhere. :P 5) This is a particularly grand scale example of the development process and iteration. This is not the only thing we've worked on that was scrapped and inevitably the reasons that we cut things can be idiosyncratic, though they usually fall down to if they are fun enough. I'm sure that just piques your appetite without bedding it back down again, so to say, but that's a bit of the history behind the mystery." www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/33i9hn/fortunes_vale_the_map_that_went_missing/cqm0p6w

I see people asking why they never told us about this. The problem is Anet could stick however big a label on it saying it might not come in the game, as soon as Anet shows something off, people will expect it to come no matter what. You would then see a lot of QQ on the forums when Anet has to announce they have abandoned the project. Announcing such a project is almost like a promise of content in the eyes of some people, even if it's not. Don't worry guys, Anet have their own team of internal testers, and they sure as hell know what they're doing. If it they didn't see it as fit to be in the game, then it probably was for a good cause. Let's just be happy they didn't show it off and then crush our dreams :) Peace!

SneakyGrizzly I agree, however i feel that we (the players) should also have a say in what content we would like. This map, for example, I would really like to play on. When I get to the end I would be happy to receive a popup window asking me to rate the map and then ANET could make a choice of whether to keep it in the game based on the ratings it gains from the player base. I personally feel it's a waste to make cool maps like this and then just throw them into the "Meh, can't be bothered to finish it" pile. Personally I feel that right now the game is running a bit dry on content, especially since the living story ended. Wouldn't now be a perfect time to introduce a few new maps like this as a trial period? They did it with SAB and other dungeons... why not do it with new maps. If they are popular maps then ANET should keep them in... Heck they could even make a gem store access token to enter the map (which they have also done with the airship passes). ~Coopz

A simple map is not a finished gamemode by far. Before adding it into the game, they would have to code it, design the events, exploit proof it, test it, fix the major bugs, etc.. All this costs time and resources, which Anet as a company have to manage strategically. At some point they had to make a judgement call and at least postpone, if not cancel it's development, so that they could work on other stuff which they felt was better for the game. As I said, we can not deduce that just because the map layout is there and some voice-acting has been done means that the game-mode is done and polished ready to just be dumped into the live client. They have testers who work for them, so if you want to test every SINGLE idea that Anet has, feel free to sign up :D

Really nice walkthrough WP! Its amazing how much work, not just on the map, but the fact they got voice recordings in. I wonder how much testing they did and then realised its not going to work out. If ArenaNet were much more open and showed off things like this and asked the community by having it as Work In Progress materials - like Edge of the Mists was supposed to be. Perhaps have a section were new ideas are tested in a "Beta" section, so new PvP maps, PvE ideas, WvW changes are all tested and players are aware that this section of GW2 may never actually come into the game.

This is absolutely fascinating! I actually hope this video forces ANets hand, in a way. Not to add the content to the game, but rather, now that this information is more widespread, I would love to see a development blog talking about how this was supposed to work, and why it was ultimately scrapped. I always find that kind of stuff fascinating. It's one of the reasons I love Riot, for example.

The amount of work and effort put into this is astounding, but the fact it is not in the game says to me that Arena Net really care about what they put in their game. Which gives me a lot of hope for the expansion.

This map seams to have a lot of PvE to be a WvW map and many narrow spaces and secrete passages to complement big scale PvP fights. I can imagine this map as a PvE map similar to the Silverwastes, a huge end game instance with 3 paths, a small scale event/tournament PVP map with 2-3 groups of each server participating, or maybe this could be a guild hall map in which different guilds will fight to gain access to a guild hall. I will stay around the Guild Hall idea for a bit, this map combines all the different elements of Guild Missions: escort, jumping puzzle, defend and kill different kind of enemies all in one big map. Maybe this is the ultimate Guild Mission, find your way, fight and compete with other guilds to gain your Guild Hall. This map looks very exiting to me and I hope it will have some use.

maybe it is a 15 man raid? (3 parties) i'm not much of a gw1 player but i could imagine this to be above brisbane wildlands (at the broken bridge portal) Edit: I got this idea very early on in the video but after watching the whole thing i am even more certain of it. the starting area doesnt seem like it would work in wvw... the portals get you to lions arch and maybe 3 of the home towns (it appears that the npcs are from different races. my guess would be human, norn or charr and asura). the dam-region at the end perfectly fits with the data mined area above DR. the only thing that does not fit is the snowy are but maybe this map would end up somewhere near harathi hinterlands. due to the karka in lions arch (since the last update - it is hidden) i believe that this is a first hint that the karka will come to tyrias main continent at some point. maybe the tree parties arent fighting each other but the white mantle instead... there were hints about them whne we entered the silverwastes... this could end up as a quite huge lore bomb which is another reason that i dont believe that this is wvw

DriveThru Just because it was stored in the PvP area early on (perhaps the only way they had for multiple parties to be together at the time) doesn't rule this out IMHO. And it wouldn't have to be placed in Tyria.

Nice video, WP. Things like this, keep 'em coming, even if they are almost all speculation. Who knows, maybe it will spark something in some creative dev team that we'll see in an ExPac after HoT. Some alternate theories on the map: There are 3 WvW server but there are also 3 factions. Suppose the Norn was Vigil, the Human was Whispers and the Asura was Priory. This map, then, could have been a co-op world event type of map for the members of those factions. Each has a separate goal but all have to get to the Vale to accomplish it. It would be something like a faction super dungeon. There are just too many interactions with NPC races for this to be a WvW map. Unfortunately, while whatever idea they had may have seemed awesome, I expect it was shelved due to it's development time and initial play testing. Consider: as you say, the map is huge. With the number of events that would be necessary to complete it, I expect this is a minimum 4 hour map from start to finish. Almost no one would invest that kind of time in a single event chain unless the rewards at the end were stupidly awesome. Also, this would have been back before megaservers so lightly populated servers may never have been able to complete it.

WP, I feel like the dialogue about the bandits, skritt, and ogre civil war was actually referring to the bandits and skritt from before, along with a civil war amongst the ogres, which was why the asura pointed out that they were enslaving their own kind. A civil war would also not be between rival factions or races, and would instead be within one faction or race, which is why it's called a civil war. Just my interpretation on what was said. Love the videos, keep up the amazing work!

Personally i'd love to see this brought out as a special event, that way it wouldn't interfere with regular WvW but we'd still be able to try it out. And the devs would be able to gauge player reaction to it. See what parts the players really enjoy and what parts they don't and then apply that knowledge to new content.

aRestless But it's crazy how far along this got before "not good/fun enough" was determined. Surely voice acting wasn't needed for internal testing, etc. So, what does that say? Either Fortune Vale's initial testers were wrong/biased or the final call was wrong/biased. Besides a worry about spreading PVP community too thin (jk stronghold), really hard to imagine what could've caused such a delayed dissatisfaction.

It's never explicitly stated that this is a WvW-style competitive map. Are you sure that's not just a bias you're putting on this? The exits to previous parts of the map could as easily suggest the map can hold up to three 'runs' at once, with the possibility of people going back to support a previous group rather than hinder them. Either way, I really, really hope they reuse this map for something. It looks gorgeous from just the collision map alone, plus it's a lot of work to throw away if it could be recrafted into a fun side mission or maybe a few fractal sections.
@clolton
@clolton 9 жыл бұрын
CuriousMoth Yeah, I think a competitive PVE map makes more sense (and would've certainly filled a gap in GW2 endgame). Wait in queue until 3 groups are formed and then race each other to the end. No direct PVP, claim the NPC camps to hinder the other teams, etc. Have seen dungeon races in other games, could've been ANet's spin on it.

I think this map goes too far on the PvE side of things to fit in with WvW. On another side of this, though, I could see lots of potential here as potential Guild Raid Content. This feels, to me, more close to what Silverwastes and Dry Top precursors than a WvW map. The presence of specific vendors throughout in the hubs could make it potentially a really cool raid style environment. Given that Guild Halls might end up being in the mists, this could still find a place as a raid down the line. Personally, I like to see this type of thing talked about (by the devs especially) since itdoes show that there is work behind the scenes and that there are things happening. I would love for a dev to say what this map is/was and even some lessons learned and ideas tossed around from this.

I think it'd just take too long to complete for the average GW2 player to be able to be there for the whole thing if it was a raid type thing. The scale of the map fits closer to a WvW type map where people can pop in and help some when they can and leave when they need to, and not be chastised by their guild or whatever for not being able to dedicate a chuck of 3-4 hours or however long this would take to complete.

Hey WP, nice video :) . Perhaps this gamemode would have been for four servers, one defending and three racing to the end. Maybe somewhere along the way a server gets eliminated. Anyway, this show how Arenanet does things. The game is in good hands. A lot of preperation goes into everything. Fortunes Vale seemed to be already big and development was already a good deal on the way and did not make it. Think about the things that made it. Things they've released, but they were already thinking of at, or even before release. And think about things yet to come.

WoodenPotatoes thank you so much for putting this all together. It's amazing to see maps like this, however I can see some pitfalls that may have derailed this if it was a 3 way race to the top. Namely choke point camping specifically the spawn. It's scenarios like this that leads to the current break out event in wvw. Couple it with the predictable npc path makes it hard to push. I would love to see this enter the game as a holiday event. Best would be tweak it into wintersday. Such an epic map would be fun over an extended holiday like that. Though ideally for this to work ideally anet would need to figure out some way for the sides to team up temporarily so they show up as friendly or at least neutral to each other for short periods of time to better communicate to the masses that they should work together against the third at that moment.

I do reckon a PvE endgame content that put emphasis on each Order, but not in a race, but rather a Cooperative Mission. The portals are most likely to be entrances to each Order's home base, with the 4th maybe to LA. With no dialogue indicating they were against each other and the layout of the map is too linear to become a PvP zone.

I agree with the others that have stated that this appears to be more of a large scale PVE map. Contrary to 3 NPC's working against each other a'la PVP or WVW with the assistance of a small player group, I think there are 3 groups of people pushing towards a common goal either as a race, or maybe one of the "challenging" gameplay options ANET has discussed possibly related to guilds.

I think the map is way too linear to be some regular pvp/wvw map. I mean what if the npc's are close to the end of the map when you join in? Run all the way over there to miss out on everything? And having multiple copies of the map would potentially cause way too much people of one server and not enough of the other server on the map (making the fight potentially very unbalanced). What if they were experimenting to see if they could create some big wvw-dungeon like map? You create your party (as you would for a dungeon) then register for this map, wait for 2 other teams to register and then the map would load. You can work together (with the knowledge that your attacks can still hurt the other teams, like the 'obsidian sanctum' jumping puzzle were people can choose to fight each other).Maybe each team could represent a different order (for example red server would be order of whispers) and the events you see would be dependent on the order you represent that week? And in order to progress each team needs to do their events for the npc to be able to go on? The map may have been way to big for that. Maybe the map got killed because it was either too big or way too linear? I like the idea though :p

That was a really impressive map, kinda depressing to see it get scrapped in the end. I would like it to be in some way recycled later.

considering the scale of the thing,i believe the reason they abandoned this, is because server limitations. think about it, if anet could allow more people in wvw, why woudnt they? now consider this giant map, with the same amount of people a regular wvw map has.. i believe the big encounters would be few and far between, and testers feedback would have reflected that. considering this problem is near insurmountable, they would have to scale the map down a whole bunch, and then you might as well start over and make a new relatively smaller map, like the wvw queue maps.

Wait, it seems like there is already some of this content in gw2. If you capture Stonemist, it is a similar mechanic to "owning" Fortune Vale.

I find seeing cut content in such detail fascinating, though it certainly makes you wonder how many things like this they've done that didn't make its way into the .dat file. Could perhaps explain why it seems like content takes so long to come our way.

Maybe it might have been their version of raid content with all 3 servers pushing their npc to get to the end first, all of the routes back to previous areas would make sense then because if you are pushing your npc in front then you can double back and try to slow the others down. seems more of a capture map rarther than 1 server defending and 2 servers attacking.

could this be not a server v server thing but players allied with the 3 factions in the game get split into groups or vigil, order of whispers and durmand priory? each character seems like they are from the respective orders, considering mists is for server pvp and this seems more like either way It would be nice to see something like this added into the game

Wouldn´t it be fun to have a Map rotation. 1 Week Fortunes Vale Tour next week Edge of the Mist. And perhaps 1 or 2 other WvW Maps that dosnt give points.

Looks awesome, but how long a game would last ? Probably hours given the map size, so it's likely that is the reason for Anet to not include Fortunes Vale, because few palyers have this amount of time to give just for one game type.

WoodenPotatoes True, but in an escort type of game, the number of players in each side should be approximately the same, if people start to leave/join whenever they want it might unbalanced the forces. Moreover there is the problem of the huge surface area to cover, this game mode would probably ask for a lot of players, and as you said in the video it might split the WvW community. Anyway we don't have enough informations to know what exactly was Fortunes Vale, I hope that the devs will speak about it now that it's public, but there are very good ideas, like those chariots to push that remind me the payload mode from Team Fortress 2. It could be a cool feature for a new sPvP mode, or new way to carry ressources for an evantual new borderland map.

lol WP, that last audio file. I could draw so many lines from the asura to you. Anyway: Cool map! I could imagine that being one weekly event that goes for 5 hours or so... However I am wondering how that dead could come back. Given that this map is so large, way points seems to be necessary. Maybe the towns would serve es check points for each server? Making the dominant server more powerful and the need for two servers allying up more strong.

Maybe there was far too much going on in the map which caused server issues? It seems like it would have been a fantastic alternative to the regular game type but it might have had lag. Maybe they believed that wouldn't be very popular or too oriented around NPCs? I'm sure there were a lot more factors but I feel like those two may have been big ones.

Id say it reminds me of the old Alliance battles from Gw1 mixed in with the similar style of The deep / Urgoz warren, where there would be teams fighting towards a single objective but there being different areas with different styled effects. Id have like to have seen this not as in a WvW map maybe, but maybe an elite Fractal where 3 (or more) groups can spend up to a few hours in this one map alone, fighting to the end chest.

I could definitely seeing this sort of map being used in a Guild vs Guild "raid" sort of challenge (that could be accessed from the guild halls?!?!?!!!) Allowing for more competitive guild challenges. To me this would be a great idea and could definitely be called difficult end-game content / raids.

Well it's certainly interesting taking a look through this map, but I think it's just way too big to function in a WvW set up and it's understandable that this didn't make it into the game. Most of the map would probably be vacant most of the time with players simply huddled together around the npcs and without some serious waypoint unlocks and such it would take forever to catch up to the npcs if you get into WvW late, or die and have to waypoint or what have you. Not to mention that if the npc paths are linear or mostly linear then it's probably going to get old after a while doing the same escort over and over in the same order. Very cool looking map regardless, but not without massive problems I think.

It is a huge shame and seems a huge waste of resources that they never finished this and added it to the game. Just seeing the map here, imagining if it was textured, it would have been an incredibly beautiful, flavourful, and varied map, and it's a real shame we'll never get to explore it with our characters.
