Originally part of a 5-member band called the Paramours, Hatfield and Medley broke away to form a duo. During a performance at a military base, some of the black marines yelled out "you guys sound righteous, brothers" due to the soulfulness of their sound. The name stuck and they were nicknamed "blue-eyed soul". Sadly, some white radio stations refused to originally play this song because their sound and name of the group led the station to assume they were black artists. The song received air time on black radio stations until the stations called them in for an interview; when they realized they were white, they stopped playing the song for a while as they assumed their audience wouldn't listen to "two white guys". Fortunately greatness overcame those circumstances and this song became the most played song on American radio and television in the 20th century with over 8 million air-plays by 1999.

@@FortWorthFabian Phil Spector is in prison now for murdering a girl in his mansion. But literally his "wall of sound" was a basement wall system. He would record the studio version, take the masters down to a basement with concrete walls, and record it with the echos off the walls. Genius!

@@mikeschumacher9715 Check out a documentary about the "Wrecking Crew". It's sometimes included in the Netflix library. They were studio musicians that dominated the music recording scene in LA back in the '60s. They're the one's Phil Spector used for his recording sessions. They give the explanation for the wall of sound. They recorded in an open studio and had a lot of bleed through of sound from each instrument's microphone. That gave the sound that echo quality. My brother, they were not even related. Bill Medley is the bass singer, Bobby Hatfield is the guy with the high pitched voice.. Two southern Calif boys in the early 60’s singing blue-eyed soul, and they were named The Righteous Bro’s. by a black Chicago DJ. Playing their vinyl with no idea who they were, after the records were played, the DJ would excitedly exclaim “That’s RIGHTEOUS, brother!” Bobby died in a motel room in Kalamazoo, MI some years back the night before their performance there. But their music was from their inner soul, you can’t “teach” something like this. This shows me, time and again, how music transgresses our daily differences from others. Go out and show some love today, my brother. Hey, from a (white) guy in Kansas....I love you, my friend! God bless you!

This song was recorded by The Righteous Brothers in October 1964 & released the next month. They are not related though - Bill Medley is the lead singer on this song & Bobby Hatfield is his back up partner. This song holds the title as the most requested song of the 20th century. I think with all these KZbinrs reacting to it in recent years that it may also earn the title for this century as well. It continues to live on, with a renewed breath through the younger generations that are discovering all this great music from the past. :-) "Soul & Inspiration" is another great song by them together. Bobby sings solo on "Unchained Melody" Please also check out Sir Tom Jones (aka The Voice). He was dubbed with that moniker decades before the competition-reality TV show of the same name. Tom is held in such high regard not only by fans, but also his peers in the music industry. Elvis Presley really admired Tom's vocal talents - such a powerful, booming, yet so melodic voice. Some of Tom's big hits that other KZbinrs are reacting to lately are: Delilah, I'll never fall in love again, Green green grass of home, It's not unusual, She's a lady... oh, and he did a cover of KISS (by Prince) with the band, Art of Noise, back in 1988. He's still singing strong & touring at 80 years old (his b-day is tomorrow June 7th)
