Yeah, I remember the morning I heard Karen died. I cried for days. She was a beautiful, talented spirit....I was lucky to see them live many times and I played drums in high school because of Karen. Meeting them once backstage in 1975 was a thrill I still remember so well. Thanks for doing this documentary.

Wow, what a privilege! I was just a young teen at the time of her death, but I adored her voice so much and still do. If it were possible to meet any vocalist in person among those both living or dead, my hands-down choice would be to meet Karen Carpenter. She seemed to be such a sweet person with a wonderful sense of humor. How I wish she were still here making making more beautiful music with that golden voice!

I still get teary-eyed watching this, especially at the end. With all that they both accomplished, Karen still never did get to enjoy and experience what she had truly wanted, someone to love, and them love her, and her own little picket fence with some kids - her/their kids! - running around. So heartbreakingly sad. I don't know how she sang those love songs night after night without it ripping her heart into pieces. I agree with one of the interviewees that she needed some time as much as anything; some time off to take a breather, chill out, and time to really think, and begin to figure out what she truly wanted in her life and for herself. Most ppl go through this between our 20s and 30s. It's a natural progression of things. Yet, in a lot of ways she already knew. She just wasn't being able to find the time to find her own family, her partner in life and children. So sad. And p.s. I LOVE her solo album. It would have done fine if it had been released when it was supposed to have. It would have done fine for what it was.

Well, I'm crying again. You know that thing that one of the guests said about the stigma? You're not the only one marveling at the Carpenters today, but when I was a kid, it was SO not cool to like them. I was one of the sissy boys who just loved beauty and not the loud rock that was really exciting people. I remember talking to a friend of mine about her, and he said, "Yeah, but she's not exciting like (I won't mention the name of the female artist). The female singer my friend liked was a loud, overly embellishing, screaming, look-at-me-I'm-in-pain singer. There were a lot then and a lot of people these days love singers like that too. Just watch a talent show on TV and just try to find anyone who has the balls to JUST sing the melody. Oh yeah, and the ones who just can't for the life of them sing the actual melody without adding several-hundred extra notes to show everyone, "Look what I can do." I mean, you forget what the melody is when you listen to that. Yeah, everyone today is so nice about appreciating them, but I wish I could take you on a time machine to when I was kid. Carpenters...cool? Nope. That didn't sway me from loving them, but it was still irritating. So again, this is why I like your channel. Like I want to grab you and bring you to the house so you can hear Karen on my Stax electrostatics. You'd fall over the sound is that beautiful. It's like she's whispering in your ear. Thanks so much for doing these. I have a friend I'm going to tell to watch these.

I was 11 when she died and I just remember how shocked people were when the news broke. Her voice was so special, but even then I don't think people realized how special it was and that we were actually hearing one of the best vocalists of all time. The fact that people who weren't even born yet when she passed are now discovering the Carpenters and are totally blown away by her talent is her true legacy. It's also worthwhile to mention that Karen's death put the perils of eating disorders on the front page, which in turn, increased public awareness and improved clinical knowledge, diagnosis, and treatment. It's just so tragic and so very sad that she had to die of anorexia because, at time, it was neither a well-known nor well-understood disorder. RIP Karen -- you're so very missed.

My first concert was The Carpenters in 1972 when I was 12. It was when their song Sing a Song was popular and they chose a few 5th and 6th graders to back them on it. We all tried out, even people like me that can't carry a note. It was a wonderful night.

The issue was that he confessed to Karen that he had an vasectomy and Karen of course wanted to have kids. Karen told her mother she didn't want to marry him. Agnes's response was that it was too late to stop the wedding and that she made her bed and had to lie in it. Seeing her smiling and happy on day of the wedding knowing she wanted out of the marriage is tough to see. The collapse of her solo album and marriage just added to her anorexia issues. RIP Karen.

I believe she had low esteem of herself from childhood and her mother didn’t see that she put Richard first so often. This caused Karen to rely on ‘ men’ to tell her what was good for her. The tabloids were cruel back then too.

Her mother may have loved her but she was unbelievably controlling and critical of everything she did. Karen had no control over anything in her life and that came from Richard as well. It makes me angry! Watch the movie The Karen Carpenter Story, it explains a lot. Cynthia Gibb plays Karen. Richard Carpenter was a director of the film so you know it's factual.

"Other Worldly" is just the perfect description. Since I am from that "back in the day" era, I remember it all about the true ridicule that they both went through for nearly a decade. The know-nothings that commented on them because it was the real beginning of the cancel culture, even then. Even without "social media" The "tolerate" crowd was actually the most intolerant of all. Just like today, only a 1,000 times worse. Most women of her day just could not bring themselves to step out of the feminine mold to even say gently - hey, wait up a minute.....I'm taking a break.....I'll call everyone when I'm ready to come back. So...of course, as we know now.....putting something in your own mouth was a 100% way to control her own life. Even at her own demise. The family dynamics of the Mother/Son vs her own daughter was just yet another pile on. But there were no Dr. Phil's back then, to point out to Richard that maybe he could have jumped out of his own narcissism for a minute or two, and have a deep dive with the Mother about her lack of acknowledgement for her daughter. Who knows if it would have helped. They'll just never be another voice like hers - ever. I feel grateful that I was able to follow them through the years, as the history was unfolding. Thank you for caring enough to listen to this icon, and learn her story.

The problem is that by 1979 disco was dying fast. There was a lot of dislike for disco at the time. As one example witness disco demolition night that summer during a White Sox baseball game. People who liked the Carpenters were not the same people that were going to follow Karen Carpenter into the disco craze.

Well. Idk. I personally think that she deserved to have it released, especially after putting $400,000 of her own money down and behind it. It's horrible that the studio waited until just 24 hours before it was to be released to officially shelve it. The official word is that she made the decision, but did they give her much of a choice? Quincy Jones himself, along with Phil Ramone, had already reworked some of the arrangements on it. Besides, there are some songs on that album that are not disco. There's a little blues, some easy-listening, and even a duet with one of the hottest male singers at that time, Peter Cetera of CHICAGO on it. Jeez. Duets with him were huge in the early 1980s. That would have caused a buzz. Karen Carpenter singing a duet with Peter Cetera? I'd guess some radio play for that one. It may have bombed, but at least she would have had some fun with it. One of my favs is her original take on "Make Believe It's Your First Time". Wow! Beautifully, masterfully done. So intimate. She's singing to just the person in the room with her, without all the extra voices and orchestration throughout the song. Just two ppl and her singing about them considering making love. Such a beautifully intimate take on the song. Heck, she'd have probably been so busy enjoying all the buzz about KC goes blues, disco, and singing duets about making love in the afternoon, I rather doubt she would have had the time for a quick engagement and wedding, leading to the eventual hubby that came along. When she got engaged just two months after meeting him that says a lot. It was the final straw to an eventual deadly downward spiral. Bless you, Karen. You deserved so much better. You are still so loved, and your legacy lives on through the music. Thank you! Karen's solo album, Wikipedia: "The production of the album cost $400,000 of (Karen) Carpenter's own money and $100,000 fronted by A&M Records. The $100,000 fronted by A&M was offset against Carpenters' future album royalties."

I just wish she'd dare to take up some more space! To say, what the heck. I'm doing this for myself. Personally I think she wanted to reveal the well hidden parts of herself that were'nt under the influence of all the well wishing people around her (mostly men in the role of big brothers and fathers), and of course her mother. But it's so complex. Many people are very angry with Richard and Agnes. But let's face it, we know SO little, just what we've been told through interviews of friends and family in books and documentaries. Richard does'nt even answer more questions about the cause of Karen's passing. A brother lost his sister, and a mother her daughter. That's horrible no matter what family issues might have been.
@CaptainJess1994
@CaptainJess1994 3 жыл бұрын
From what I gather, Karen's self-esteem/worth issues stemmed from her childhood when her parents showed that they valued her brother Richard more than they valued her. She must have grown up and lived the rest of her life in acceptance of the lie that she was less than her brother, even despite clearly being the star of the duo in the eyes of the audience. By that point, it was already embedded in her mind that she was worthless and could never be as good or smart as him, which likely developed into a personality disorder, in addition to the eating disorder. Richard was even jealous of her at some point in their music career, supposedly because he was used to being the one on top. And how is it that their family and friends got him the proper help for his addiction but not her for her anorexia? Were they still treated with the same inequality in adulthood? Wow, man.

You are very understanding and wise. I agree with everything you said about The Carpenters. I still have their vinyl records and adored Karen's voice. I loved singing those love songs and always felt that I understood her pain and need to be in control of something in her life. Besides sharing the same Christian name, I also starved myself as I always felt unwanted by my parents. I nearly died in 2002 but an underlying condition I was born with, that I knew nothing about, paralysed me from the neck down. I have since recovered to a certain degree since then but still have some problems but the one thing that upsets me most is I had lung cancer a few years ago, although I never smoked, and had a lobectomy which has resulted in me losing my ability to sing along to those beautiful ballads of Richard and Karen Carpenter. Keep up the good work.

Karen Carpenter simply wanted her own family with supportive husband and good kids. That is what her songs were all about and very easy to understand. And it's hard to believe her family and friends apparently couldn't help Karen with getting the balance she needed to be happy and healthy and successful all at the same time.

I bought Karen's solo album when it was released after her death. I listened to all the Carpenters albums until they were worn out. But the solo album, I listened to exactly twice. Her voice was still her voice but the songs didn't work. They were wise not to release it during her career. It is easy to make judgements from a distance and with limited information. But those judgements are rarely valid.

Fabian...you're learning about them now, but I have all their albums and bought them when they first came out. They are my favorite group and Karen is my favorite singer of all time. I love them and love her, to this day. I used to argue with friends who were all listening to screamers and loud rockers, which I hated. Well, I bought her solo album, listened to one or two songs and put it on the shelf. I don't like it. There is lightning in a bottle that was Richard and Karen together, but the arrangements on that album left me dry. Her singing was sublime as usual, but not the album. So you're hearing from someone who's loved them before you were born. So your appreciation for her is absolutely wonderful, which is why I look at your site every night. Actually, I love the way you appreciate all the music you encounter. But I could take or leave that solo album.

I enjoyed so much your comments about this documentary, and the truly heartfelt loss you have felt along with the rest of us over losing Karen at such a young age. You show a lot of wisdom in your analysis of the whole situation. As many have expressed through the years, it's too bad that more wasn't understood about eating disorders back in the eighties. The sad thing is that Karen NEVER was chubby or overweight, but it was during the time period that "Twiggy" , a very skinny model was all the rage! What an awful body image to have to aspire to! Many of the models at the time ate Jello with cottonballs to make them feel full, but not gain weight. Crazy times...such a shame!

Awesome job sir. It's obvious how this story has affected you. You have a compassionate, considerate heartfelt soul. 40 years after this tragedy broke my heart I am still sitting here with tears in my eyes. They say she died of anorexia nervosa but I personally believe she died of a broken heart. Brought on by an accumulation of emotional events in her life that weighed heavy on her. I hate to say this but I believe one was her relationship with her mother who favored Richard who was a very talented child prodigy with enormous potential. I can't help but feel Karen desperately sought her mothers love and acceptance. From what I understand, the morning she died she was alone in the house with her mother downstairs and had gone up to her room. They found her a short while later in her room. It's obvious Richard dearly loved his kid sister. Wish she could have found the TRUE LOVE she so desperately sought from others because you can tell from her ANGELIC voice she deserved it! SO SAD. One thing I think they missed mentioning in all this is their wonderful collection of Christmas music. Wonderful job Mr. Fabian. Thank you!

I own Karen's solo album and I must say that her vocals are perfect, as usual, and I did enjoy a few of the songs and the chance to hear her higher notes in head voice. However, none of the songs made me cry or gave me goosebumps like her albums with Richard had done. Phil Ramone didn't take as much advantage of her glorious low notes and the arrangements and song selections were not as special as Richard's. There were a few songs that could possibly have charted, but there was a feeling for me that some of the magic was missing. I wish it had worked out for her to have it released while she was still alive. 😢

Hey, new to your channel and am enjoying it. As to your thoughts about Karen's label killing the disco album, I completely agree. Do it. Just take a chance. About 6 months ago, I heard a couple of comedians/actors talking about how Hollywood kills talent and imagination. Mike Myers was one of the actors who talked about it. He said something like, "I was noticed and then signed because of my talent and creativity. The second they had me in their system, they tried to prevent me from using ANY OF IT."

You said you were lost when it came to the official cause of her death. From my understanding, when there isn't adequate nutrition the body looks for any source and the heart loses its size and becomes weaker and unable to function. It's obvious you felt strongly about this terrible circumstance, just like everyone who was shocked when it happened.

See, the plan was that Richard was going to be the superstar. You can't really blame him though. He had real talent but her talent eclipsed him. She was the star. This has been difficult to watch. Sadness filled my heart. My kids are grown but I am doing my best to show them love and to tell them how wonderful they are. Every single word counts man. Everything we can do to let our loved ones know how much we care about them is so important. We have to say the words to them.

Your mad about Karen not releasing her album. Don't be. She was not meant for disco or high notes. In other words she wanted to be singing and as skinny as Olivia Newton John.

I agree with you that a lot of this is really upsetting. Anorexia is about controlling your body & food intake, because you have no control in other aspects of your life. If Karen wanted to try disco, Richard should have supported her. Those solo album songs are on YT & theyre great. The last line line of the Goodbye to Love documentary said it all: "Karen's career, like her mother's love, belonged to Richard".

I was aware of Richards struggle with drug abuse. The thing that both surprised me and then angered me was Richards callous attitude about Karens death. In interviews he was noticeable pissed! All he could could see and talk about was how selfish Karen was for not taking care of herself, of all of the money that they could have made had she lived! He was pissed because her death cost HIM millions of dollars! What a dick!

Fabian, understand that Karen made everyone in her family and at A&M wealthy beyond comprehension. Karen was treated poorly by all of them from childhood to her solo album and marriage! Her mother never once told her that she loved her nor acknowledged the talent that everyone was amazed at! A&M was broke until Karen started singing for them. They all blocked Karen from finding a true love. After her passing Alpert and Moss sold it for millions! Herb Alpert (a married man) even tried to have sex with Karen! Karen's husband stole her money and denigrated her. Karen deserved better. We still truly love this divine person.

You picked up on the way Karen was shafted over her solo album 100%. Richard was incapacitated, and as sick as Karen was, she wanted to keep working, but more than that, she wanted to spread her wings a little and create her own identity outside Carpenters. I can just see all the men in that studio afterward, men she trusted, just scowling with their arms crossed. And all because of this: 1. Disco; 2. She sang more in her higher register; 3. She sang about sex; 4. Control.

11:48 One of the reasons was the new husband didn't want children and already had a vasectomy which he never told Karen about. Even today his background history is vague at best.

The solo album was better than most of the albums being released by other female singers. The problem was that the producer Phil Ramone did not record her utilizing her strengths which were her one of a kind deep range and intimate style of singing lyrics and melody. He seemed to be trying mimic Olivia Newton-John’s range. Huge mistake and a lost opportunity.
