Karen had many "relationships", including Mike Curb, Tony Danza, Terry Ellis, Mark Harmon, Gary Alley, Tom Bähler, John Adrian, Steve Martin and Alan Osmond, but was just so busy, they never went anywhere, or they were scuttled by her family. Next? How about something from her solo album(If I Had You is really good)

My three favorite songbirds from the 70's, Karen Carpenter, Marilyn McCoo, Linda Ronstadt. Each supremely talented with otherwordly voices. Although slightly different voices and tonalities each has a voice you could listen to forever. Try Marilyn's One Less Bell To Answer" or If I Could Reach You. For Linda, try Long Long Time or I've Got a Crush on You.

I've not read through all the comments but am responding to some of the questions you are asking in the reaction video. And they are great questions, Fabian. When it comes to dating, Karen tried to date but their schedule was ridiculous. Richard still talks about it in interviews at times how difficult it was for them both, but when "Close To You", their first #1 hit and second single released as "Carpenters" went #1, everything changed for them and suddenly they were on all the top TV talk shows - Ed Sullivan Show, Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, Johnny Cash's TV Show, The Carol Burnett Show, The Fifth Dimension Show, etc., and etc., and they started touring, too, in addition to recording more albums. They hit it big with "Close To You" in 1970 which started the touring craze. By 1974 they were the top touring act in the business from the USA, performing over 800 shows (I've read as many as 805 to 812 shows) in one year. Think about that, in 365 days they performed 805/812 concerts plus traveling to each venue all over the world, Japan, Europe, and etc. Plus, as if that was not enough, they released their "Live" album from Japan in 1974 & started recording their sixth studio album, "Horizon" in late 1974, early 1975 that was released in the summer of 1975. By the summer of 1975, Karen had lost over 40lbs from all the touring, album recording/studio work and etc., and now we know that she almost died by the Fall of 1975. She had dropped weight to approximately 89lbs. Some resources say 83lbs, others 79lbs, etc. Bottom line, she had dropped too much weight during this difficult & punishing schedule. Idk how the heck anyone could work that much and not ultimately crash. But anyway. They had to cancel their European Tour scheduled for the Fall of 1975. She was too sick. Ppl whom knew her well have commented that she was so upset about that, and felt guilt about it, but my gosh. The poor woman, both of them were extremely overworked during those years. Very few, if any other groups had that kind of hectic recording and touring schedule. No wonder they both began to have some cracks showing by 1975, 1976. Richard eventually can't physically hold up to all the pressure either and by 1978 he had developed a qualuude addiction. Thankfully he got treatment and rehab for that. But they were NOT machines, but human beings run into the ground. Karen had no time to really date anybody, even though she had a few boyfriends off and on through the years. But her schedule was punishing. Bless this beautiful angel. That, too, was part of the start of her downward spiral. 1974/1975 was the telltale time that something was going off the rails for them, too much work, too much touring and traveling, and it was slowly killing her. It is well documented that the disease she had has a lot to do with feeling out of control of one's life, and it's an attempt to try to regain some sense of control. Karen always said that what she really wanted was someone to love, a loving husband to share her life with, and especially children. She had really wanted more than anything to be a mom. Bless this beautiful, sweet young woman. She never got to experience the one thing she truly had wanted, to be a mom. So heartbreaking. It seemed so simple, yet it never happened for this beautiful, sweet, endearing young woman, which makes her passing even more tragic to me. The irony of all the classic love songs they recorded, and she sang them every night while touring, yet she never got to truly experience what she sang about night after night after night. I cannot imagine what that does to one's soul. 😞

Richard and Karen's schedule was so intense they were on the road all the time she hardly had a chance to breathe let alone date it's a matter of fact most of the guys she met she met through the the group being members of the band or whatnot and this guy she was introduced to by a friend and he was a complete clown and player and for someone like Karen who was so soft spoken and kind-hearted she just didn't have the strength to withstand the blow he put on her.

Karen really only wanted to be loved, to get married and raise children. Unfortunately, the man she married lied to her, he had a vasectomy before they got married and didn't tell her. Then he was spending all her money. Her brother was the very favored child in the family and she grew up without feeling that her mother loved her. Personally, I'd like to find the creep who said she looked fat and tell him off since they lead to her death. I have always loved her voice, and was lucky enough to see them in concert. I cried when she died and miss all the music she would have made if she had lived. I am just glad to have all the music they made before her death.

Karen was way to thin by this time, audiences were shocked and thought she might have cancer! But she thought that she looked good. To answer your question, her mother and A&M manager blocked Karen from seriously dating for their own selfish reasons. Karen couldn't leave home until she was nearly 25! And even then it was in the same house with Richard a short way from her parents. Potential boyfriends were threatened with being fired if they did not break off with Karen. Mom chose Karen's stage clothes. The parents and Richard went on vacations with karen. No one truly cared about what would make Karen happy because she was their money maker! Sorry, but that was the truth. Fabian is it any wonder that Karen needed to control something in her life? The poor girl never complained nor blame anyone for her issues, but she must have wondered why her happiness was so unimportant to those she loved? Losing weight made sense to her even if it doesn't to us. We know that she was beautiful, but she thought that she must be lacking something. Karen took a lot of criticism in her life, none of it deserved! She was beautiful, talented, kind and basic! She was one of a kind and we are all the poorer without her.

@@BO_Riddle Not my assumptions, a man that Karen dated has publicly told of how he was threatened by A&M with dismissal if he kept dating Karen. Others described the tight reign put around Karen by A&M that kept men away from her. It has been reported that her mother believed that Karen would fall for a "gold digger" and so discouraged any long term relationships. Agnes definitely wanted to be the sole person to control Karen. I believe that mom and A&M did not want her with anyone who might encourage her to insist on making her own decisions. I do not believe that anyone meant to hurt Karen, only that the people around her acted selfishly. If anyone believes that Karen was given the encouragement that she deserved, then they are fooling themselves.

Such a beautiful song. But so hard to watch Karen at this point, withered away to become the frail person she was in this video. This would be The Carpenter's last charting hit. Her anorexia, within a year of this hit, would plunge her body weight to under 80 pounds, before she was finally able to have herself admitted for treatment in New York in September of 1982. Anorexia Nervosa was such an unknown condition at the time, and very misunderstood. So much of her music dealt with loneliness and pain, it was hard to distinguish the emotion in her music from her harsh reality. Some time after her passing in 83, a comedian joked that if Cass Elliott had just given Karen Carpenter that ham sandwich, they'd both be alive today. Crude, but not without a sting of reality. I was 22, the day that Karen Carpenter died, and I remember what a sad day that was for music. The pure and innocent emotions of her music, in my opinion, were the last of an era. No one since, has been able to match the raw feelings Karen Carpenter brought out in her songs.
