I listened to this track over and over in 2020, when everything was locked down. It seemed to be a Lent that did not end. I drew comfort from the idea that in the end, Christ triumphs.

Thank you for uploading this; a good timeless traditional hymn...very challenging words, too.

Forty days and forty nights Thou wast fasting in the wild; Forty days and forty nights Tempted, and yet undefiled. Sunbeams scorching all the day; Chilly dew-drops nightly shed; Prowling beasts about Thy way; Stones Thy pillow; earth Thy bed. Shall not we Thy sorrow share, And from earthly joys abstain, Fasting with unceasing prayer, Glad with Thee to suffer pain? And if Satan vexing sore, Flesh or spirit should assail, Thou, his Vanquisher before, Grant we may not faint or fail. So shall we have peace divine; Holier gladness ours shall be; Round us, too, shall angels shine, Such as minister'd to Thee. Keep, O keep us, Saviour dear, Ever constant by Thy side; That with Thee we may appear At th' eternal Eastertide.

I'm not a musician, so I can't really put this accurately, so forgive me if it isn't quite right. I hope you'll get a sense of what I'm trying to say though! In our Church, the organist played the final note of the final verse of the hymn in a major key, not the minor key of the ends of the other verses. It sounds perfect this way, as the major key of the last note uplifts and gives a sense of the triumph of the Cross at the end of all the labours of the Lenten season.

I think I do get what you’re saying. Yes I agree that would sound nice. Well said.

You just have to make sure that both the organist and the choir (especially the tenors) have all got the memo that the modulation (as it's called) is going to happen !
