Excellent tips, Tim. Weather can throw in some unexpected expenses if having to hunker down for an extra day or two. I like to carry extra freeze dried meals for those unexpected delays to save a few bucks and avoid venturing out again after getting a room.

best tip from a workmate who while over 1000 miles from home with his daughter on the rear seat,,,,,his credit card was compromized and cancelled. Had quite a time getting it resolved,,,carry a spare card or two or three......

yeah i always have an alternate card and i carry some cash too. in a real pinch i call my daughter and she books a room for me or whatever else i need. she's like AAA with love lol.

I managed my last trip of about 4000 miles over 13 days at around $100 per day, which was more than I had expected. Like you, I like to stay at campgrounds in national forests, so camping ended up being cheaper than I had budgeted. I also cook dinner for myself, but I like a nice breakfast after I ride a little in the morning, which added up. I had to replace a couple of pieces of equipment due to my own stupidity, and I stayed in a motel once, which was not planned. On this trip, I visited my son, so in the middle of the trip, I got a shower, but a lot of my bathing was in creeks or lakes.

Most don't realize that costs & needs traveling by bike costs what it does, not much different than cars, with one exception, we as bikers are on a better journey because we are with nature and experiencing what inside a car doesn't give you.....thanks again! My last trip from Dallas to pikes peak and back cost me $231. I bring plenty of snacks/peanut butter and jelly, refill my camelback at gas stations, sleep on the dirt and eat out once a day. I rode my Zuma 125 for 4 days just over 2000 miles and had the time of my life!

One of the things I like to do when budgeting for a week-long ride at least for accommodations is I will just do 125.00 a night in the event that I do end up staying in a hotel every night but also leaving myself a little extra to be able to get a nicer hotel if the cheaper hotels are not available and then just make the attempt to camp each night. I tend to estimate on the high side

3 hole oil change before and after trip: $100 x 2 = $200 Approx 1/3 of a back tire = $100 Motels $150/day (Your estimate seems a little low. Taxes jack up the price and motels close to parks are high) Gas $60 per day. Food can easily be $25 per meal if you're not careful. I like to eat very light when out on the road. Eat breakfast at the motel if they have it. Skip lunch or get a chocolate milk at a gas station. For supper get a few items from a grocery store. You may need 4 bottled waters per day at $2 each at gas stations. Park entrance fees approx $20. I've kinda given up on camping. If it is cold or hot or rainy, camping to me is not fun. If you stay in a motel you can get started earlier in the morning and can go longer at night. Also, the camping gear takes up alot of precious space. A typical vacation is approx 3000 miles and approx 7 days. My estimate is $2000 per trip.

Tim im 70 and travel light my last trip month out 2 motels camping boonies mostly i dont like camping with 50 noisy people babies,dogs,drunks. gas biggest $ maybe eat out 1 or 2 times a week being out on the road should be fun and soul food! People have different budgets all is good #1 get out off the freaking couch and ride! It dont matter what you ride they are all adventure bikes stir you soul! Jus saying

Good advice Tim. The only thing I would challenge is skimping on boots. If you’re going to be adventure riding, the boots are arguably more important than the helmet, but at least as important. You could probably skimp if you’re sticking to the pavement.

Yeah I came back from a 32 night trip. 13 camps, the rest hotels. Only twice did I find a hotel under $100. And I searched each night for the cheapest I could find.

Helmet recommendations? I don't currently do big trips, but log several thousand miles per year in commuting to work plus fun day trips and I can't stand how much wind/road noise transmits to my ears. For the first time in my 30+ years of riding, I'm now using ear plugs if I'm going more than 5mi away from home.

I really like the Arai XD4 and the Shoei Hornet X2. Both are pricey but they last for ever. If you can I would try on both and go with the one that fits better. They are for different shaped heads so the Hornet fits me better but I loved my Arai too.

Really been enjoying your channel. Having recently purchased a 1200 Tiger Rally Pro and being new to ADV riding, I have been going through a lot of gear upgrades and travel philosophy changes... One way to save some money is on an "America the Beautiful National Park Pass" annual pass for anyone that plans on visiting US national parks on a regular basis (or just a series of parks on a trip). It cost me 80 bucks plus ten in shipping for a year long pass, It more or less pays for itself with just a few trips (and is convenient as there are often separate lines for pass holders). I am in SoCal, so have Yosemite, the Sequoias, Joshua Tree, and Death Valley within a half days ride.

Have the exact helmet. What i like about that helmet is everything is replaceable. In fact painted mine from the Gray/Silver to a shiny black. Still need to replace the cheek pads, as they sre showing some wear. Its the only helmet i have found with a vissor that seems to never be effected by the wind. Meaning on the highway you can look up without your head being thrown backwards. Yeah i avoid hotels as much as i can. But those i find in route that are cheap, like on the Idaho BDR, in Riggins, ID there is a hotel for $60 with laundry. So great place just off route to refresh and wash clothes for cheap. So its also factored in in the costs. Agree with what you said. Helmet is most important and I would add waterproof stuff as a must. I always carry a nice tent and for those quicl roadside relaxing spots, a small lightweight hammock that can be thrown up in about 2 minutes.

Good tool for estimation is also to calculate all the (variable) costs afterwards and divide it the qty of the days on the road. It seems that cost per day at least for me is pretty much the same every year, with some adjustment. 1000 usd per week has some headroom with my traveling habits, but it's good to have that headroom.

Great question! I don’t travel with a spare. If I had tube tires I would carry spare tubes. But not tires. Just the puncture repair kit and a pump. Haven’t gotten a flat I couldn’t fix, yet, knock wood!

Thats just me im retired dont have to go back to work in two weeks ya i did that for a long time if thats all the time you get from work then splurge and enjoy! Main thing get out and ride any bike is an adventure bike go for it!

I don't usually do much in the way of budgeting, mostly because in the UK I am never any further than 500 miles from home, so it is all relatively 'local' stuff, even if I am in Scotland for a week. BUT, I am currently looking at a trip to Morocco and that is going to need some serious planning and budgeting.
