Afraid you're mistaken, there is no road to Wheeler Pk. You have to hike it.

I live close to where you were at on the ride and camp. Lower Johns Creek, Prestonsburg, Salyersville and down to the Gorge. Beautiful places. Especially in spring and fall. The reason the roads were sand with washed gravel we had had a major 1000 year flood event in the area. many people killed and devastated communities and towns. Just now recovering from it. Good vid. For how large the GS is, it handles tight roads and corners exceptionally well. The balance is almost unparalleled. She glides like a plane and carves like a scalpel, especially with performance street tires. It's one of the best compromises you can have as a commuter and toy. It's fast enough to keep up with and stay ahead of newer riders on RRs. It has plenty of cargo room, and it's decently fuel efficient. My GS has been my best friend for 6 years.

I know you posted this a long time ago but it gave me the inspiration I needed. I’m an old fart at 80 but I still have to fulfill my only item in the bucket list, riding down Baja on my motorcycle. Nervous about untertaking such a trip at my age and alone but it what’s the worst it can happen? Death by stupidity? Can’t think of a better way to go. Thanks again, I will follow your route and if I make it there I’ll hang out in La Paz for a few weeks. There is one thing I have lots of…time, as I’m retired. Ride safe.

Tim, all your tips are extremely useful. I use them for many years, particularly in International trips. In very hot and dry days, I wet my shirt to work as an AC.

If you visit Europe, the coast road out of Italy and in to France, down to Monte Carlo is epic. Also the Route Touristique Gorges de L'Ardeche, and of course any of the high passes through the Alps.

Best thing you can do is run a volt meter off your battery, you can see first hand the state of your battery and when it starts to drain

By the way, I am in Northeast PA. If you ever are coming East, let me know and I would love to meet you for a motorccle camping trip. My one buddy that I ride with is getting too old for these trips and I can't get my wife on the bike, so I now go alone. I love to hike and PA, NY, NJ has some cool areas. You seem to like the same scenery and experiences that I do.
