Professor John Lennox speaks from the book of Daniel, and the theme of 'Confident in the truth', one of the UCCF values at Forum 2018.
UCCF: The Christian Unions is made up of over 200 Christian Unions representing 20,000 Christian students from all sorts of church backgrounds and denominations. We want to give every student in Great Britain an opportunity to hear about Jesus and experience his love and kindness.

We really should address the social acceptance of large numbers of people speaking a fantasyland vocabulary & openly indulging in the deceit of religious belief as a tool of fascism. These are the wolves in sheep's clothing, we know them by their works: A wicked generation seeking signs when Jesus The Nailed says faith is worthless if you can't move mountains by issuing verbal orders to one. Freud wrote the antidote to Christianity is literacy. The Christians slapped their books on the Old Testament, & the Mormons glued theirs on to them both, thus proving Christians lack quality-control. Look at the verbose podium jockey speaking of faith & prayer as if we all should have a preference for travel with one foot in fantasyland. Nothing fails like prayer in a children's hospital, & there is talk as if God does not have a perfect record of doing nothing, as if we had no reason for the saying: God helps those helping themselves. A house divided cannot stand. We vote because Christians have no quality-controls, & we desire those governing not making suggestions travel is best done with one foot in someone's fantasyland. 'Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.'' It was secular law & order ending the inquisitions & witch-killings. One might expect a deity to make itself known to everyone without work performed in interpretations of old literature by guys like our verbose podium jockey. Theologians acquire grand titles without certification from a deity, & project certainty using fantasyland vocabulary in an academic setting to compensate for lack of reason.

@@StupidityindexWhen I first read this, two possibilities popped into my mind. Either you're trying to be edgy and provocative by being intentionally dense, or this isn't the writing of an actual person but rather a chimpanzee let loose on a keyboard. Nowhere in your ad hominem filled- i.e. "podium jockey"- juvenile diatribe did you make anything even resembling a valid argument. First, you need to provide a definition for "fantasy land vocabulary." I think you meant to label it "language that confounds my senses and must therefore be summarily dismissed, on account of my philosophical and theological ignorance and ineptitude." "Religion as a tool of fascism." This gave me a good chuckle on account of the knowledge that the founding father of fascism, Benito Mussolini, was an ardent atheist and materialist. His move from left to 'right' never actually modified his secular perspective. Even as late as 1944, when Mussolini was installed as the head of the puppet government in Salo, and shortly before his death, he still professed a profoundly anti religious worldview. Of course, none of this matters to an unreasonable and a-historical mind such as yours...because you weaponize words(like fascism) in an attempt to make some absurd comparison between religious belief and authoritarianism, as if to say the two are mutually exclusive. It is interesting that you mention "secular law" as being such a saving grace. First, western conceptions of law, human rights, justice, and our approach to crime and punishment more broadly, are undergirded by Judeo-Christian ethics and principles, rather than some atheistic conception of morality(which is overwhelmingly relativistic) that emerged, completely whole cloth, out of the ether. What secularism and materialism--both atheistic in theory and application--actually did, was unleash the deadliest century in human history. The idea that man could achieve, of his own accord, a global utopian cooperative devoid of God by perfecting his own nature, resulted in unspeakable human misery. Lenin, Stalin, Pol Pot and Mao(with honorable mention going to the Vietnamese and Cuban regimes) were mass murderers on an order of magnitude multiple times anything that occurred during the Inquisitions which, at best, cost the lives of a few thousand people. Of course the National Socialists pursued similar utopian goals--albeit with a racist and ethnocentric component that took its cues from the widely popular secular progressive science of the day, eugenics. And before you attempt to invoke the nonsensical "the Nazis were Christians" argument that Christopher Hitchens did- unfortunately, quite persuasively to his mostly young and impressionable fan base, I'd caution you not to engage in such historical revisionism. According to his own logic, the Bolsheviks must have all been Jews and Orthodox because they were nominally 'raised' as such! Wow! How utterly embarrassing. As for Freud's quote on literacy: He should have thanked the early church for introducing Universities to the world, not to mention the birth of Natural Philosophy and Science, the latter of which belongs almost entirely to the deeply religious Sir Isaac Newton. Likewise, the many missionaries who made their way throughout the known world preaching the gospel, also inculcated the importance of biblical literacy and education into many of their adherents. A primary example of this would be Patrick in Ireland, an island full of illiterate pagans at the time of his missionary work, that was thusly transformed into a bastion of scribes and scholars, who diligently copied(along with the Bible) some of the greatest works of antiquities. While the remnants of The Roman Empire were being ransacked and burned by pagan hordes, the newly Christianized Irish were preserving vast amounts of human knowledge and wisdom. A few final points. Your snarky quip regarding prayers in children's hospitals is just further proof of your inability to grasp metaphysical concepts. The problem of suffering has been intensely debated for centuries. There are a number of philosophical and theological perspectives on this topic, and none of them somehow disprove or otherwise debunk the existence of God. Further, there have been a number of well documented scientific studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of prayer in general, but more specifically with respect to terminally ill people. I've yet to see any data indicating that the lack of belief in God, and thusly the absence of prayer, generate any positive outcomes with respect to this demographic. Lastly, John Lennox is a mathematician, Bio ethicist and Christian Apologist...not a Theologian. I cannot fathom how Lennox is afforded so much respect. He's a member of The Oxford Center for Christian Apologists that promotes the lie that man lived with dinosaurs. Per his OCCA colleague Simon Edwards: "What everyone agrees on in fact is that god created the earth...everything on it, including the dinosaurs. Dinosaurs and human beings did live together at a certain time."

Without the word "soul," there couldn't be any religion. All stories are based on what the soul is thinking, and what the soul is doing, and where the soul came from, and where the soul is going after death of the physical body. Fortunes have been made by theologians who taught that the soul is a gift from God, and that women must never have abortions, because abortions offend God's gift to humanity. Evolution of the soul is a huge seller in religion. It means that your soul is ever upgrading and will hopefully soon make the grade of God's "entire" approval of enlightenment and salvation … or … that in the afterlife something horrible could happen to your soul. If you remove the word "soul" from religion, you will not have anything but ground zero.

But I thought the professor is against the western connected culture including facebook, google, and KZbin. At the same time the connected culture is the one that has more gender equality than the bible! It also allows minority voices to be heard. It also abolishes slavery unlike the bible. Without the connected culture, I would never hear this. I think there is a different kind of god. Perhaps it's not a Christian god?

@@fredshortname6331 You argue that the Christian God doesn't exist because western culture holds to values that you prefer? My question: by what standard can you declare that the western standards (which are based on Judeo-Christian values) are better? Do you have any ontological foundation for your morality, or is it just your opinion?

I don't know how is this related to my comment that the professor is against western connected culture. Most in my family do bible study through Facebook only. But since the professor is asking to try e-Fasting . Does this mean he suggests to stop bible study using Facebook? I mean does the professor encourage such family to only avoid any technology when doing bible study including KZbin?

1 Do electronic fasting 2 Read the scriptures every day and take them seriously, read them in a approach to know what god wants to tell you, where you can have confident in the truth to set you free from the culture lies. it's a sin Christians should repent for not to read and take the scriptures seriously.( Nabil Qureshi story when he didn't believe in the books of Moses) 3 Learn German from the bible. 4 Don't be afraid to share the gospel and the truth that changes your life, by questioning and protesting against the culture in gentle, firm and smart manners. Ask questions, listen carefully to people before you give an answer, it's okay and normal to say I don't know if you don't have an answer. Seek , knowledge, help, growth and fellowships with other. Jon 3:10 KJV And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not. Act 19:4 KJV Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. Exo 13:17 KJV And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt: God repented more than anyone else in the bible (Jonah 3:10) We can repent to sin, not only from sin (exodus 13:17) Repentance for salvation is to repent from trusting our works or anything we were trusting and put trust on Jesus as God and Saviour for Everlasting life (Act 19:4)

Long before the words Jesus, or Christian existed, those in many other religions, were also certain they knew the one and only spiritual truth. Without Judaism, there couldn't be any Christianity. The Jews were certain that they were Jehovah's chosen few. All religious stories are based on egoism. From my perspective, we have two choices. We can either believe that the universe was created by an entity that designed suffering as part of its plan ... or, we can believe (as did Stephen Hawking, before he died) that the universe always existed, and will always exist ... no plan involved. I prefer the second choice.

There are 14 million jews now out of a world population of 7.7 billion. Strange how this mystical being chose this small illiterate tribe as is chosen people when he could have selected an advanced society with a much greater population such as the Egyptians, Indians or Chinese. Oh perhaps it was because this small tribe invented god.

@@peterbatterham8522 I suggest that long before the words Hebrew, or Jew ever existed, ancient humans did not know any science, and while trying to understand their existence, sat around campfires and made up stories of gods and goddesses talking to them. Plagiarism in religion is common. For instance, the Christians plagiarized the story of Adam and Lilith from the Jews, and changed the story to Adam and Eve. And the Jews, no doubt, plagiarized the story from earlier religions and changed the story to Adam and Lilith.

@@peterbatterham8522 Here is another myth that has ancient mythical roots. From the book Weather Lore, Reader’s Digest … Floods After Noah, the best-known hero of the flood sagas is the Babylonian hero Gilgamesh, whose account is enshrined in the Epic of Gilgamesh. In ancient Sumer, the man chosen for survival was Ziusudra (meaning “he saw life”). The god Enki warned him of the gods’ decision to destroy mankind in a flood. His tale is found in the Eridu Genesis that dates back to the seventeenth century B.C.: Ziusudra is instructed to build a large boat. The flood persists for seven days, at the end of which, after making sacrifices to the gods, Ziusudra is rewarded with the gift of eternal life. The correspondences between the sagas of Noah, Gilgamesh, and Ziusudra are so striking that historians believe that they all emerged from the same oral tradition. There is some tantalizing archeological evidence that an actual catastrophe may have formed the basis for the proliferation of these myths. Excavations in Iraq have shown evidence of a flood that took place about 2900 to 2750 B.C. But flood myths have arisen independently thousands of miles (kilometers) from the Middle East. In ancient China the gods brought a flood on humans that lasted 22 years as punishment for their wayward behavior. The Mayan and Aztecs had similar flood myths.

@@peterbatterham8522 If a scientist is asked the question, “Do you believe that the universe was created,” and the scientist answers, “Yes,” that is not science, that is religion. Before he died, Stephen Hawking believed that in one form or another, the universe always existed. If he was correct, that would explain that consciousness always existed, and that suffering in all forms of life was, and is, natural, no creation or creator ever involved, to in turn, reward, or penalize. Concerning how we treat each other the onus is on us.

jcismyall you obviously don’t get science. It’s not a religion, it as no absolutes, no authority, it’s simply a process of determining what’s factual and what needs falsifying with looking at the actual physical evidence around us, and analysing the data by testable means. Look at what we’re doing now, writing on a smart phone/iPad/laptop/desktop. What are they products of? SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENTS. Science WORKS. Religion goes on scriptures written by ignorant, deluded , uneducated peoples who didn’t have the slightest idea of how the world around us or how the universe began. A world away from objective science.

Actually "he" is nowhere. The grave contains some bones and "he" exists no more. Do you really believe that the bones of all who have died since mankind evolved are going to grow new flesh and organs? What will happen to the powder of those who have been cremated? Also what age will the resurrected humans be? Some say all will be 33 being the age that Jesus was when he died and they will remain 33 for eternity.

So you attribute much of your success to being born in a good Christian family. But if born to a Muslim family you'll be totally different. So isn't the secular family is the best for nourishing free thinking? I mean why mention religion x to a child when the child may become biased to it. Isn't it better to discuss evolution first and let the child discover her self?

fred shortname No! If you don’t raise your child in Christian principles including the love of beauty in the world and nature, and animals, as well as the love of people around us and in the world, how is the child to “figure it out” when they’re older? You start a child in basic math and language skills when they’re young, then introduce simple sentences and math problems, and build skill from there. Same as the Bible tells us that Jesus loves the children and said, ”Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come into Me: for of such is the kingdom of Heaven”in Matthew 19:14. And to “train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it”, Proverbs 22:6. And how Timothy was trained by his mother and grandmother in the Scriptures; Paul tells us this. The Lord left instruction that we are to teach our kids about the Bible and Jesus Christ while they are young, and to live out a Godly life before them. Patience, kindness, honesty and being firm when needed-kids learn from us. How will they know when they haven’t been taught? That’s a most important job as a parent. If we fail, the schools will fill their minds with everything but Godly ways and wisdom. Children are SO precious! If my child rejects Jesus and is not in Heaven when they die, what good is my life? Oh, I know some children go astray as adults. But I’ve laid the foundation as a Christian parent.
