Settle Down Lyrics:
I wanna settle down
I wanna settle down
Won't you settle down with me?
Settle down
We can settle at a table..
A table for two
Won't you wine and dine with me?
Settle down
I wanna raise a child
I wanna raise a child
Won't you raise a child with me...
Raise a child
We'll call her Nebraska
Nebraska Jones
She'll have your nose
Just so you know
I wanna settle down
I wanna settle down
Won't you settle down with me?
Settle down
Run from Angela Vickers
I saw her with you
Monday morning small talking on the avenue
She's got a fancy car
She wants to take you far
From the city lights and sounds deep into the dark
Star so light and star so bright
First star i see tonight!
Star so light and star so bright
Keep him by side!
I wanna settle down
I wanna settle down
Baby there's no need to run
I'll love you well
I wanna settle down
It's time to bring you down
On just one knee for now
Lets make our vows

I think ahead of time means people/artists don't get the credit that they deserve at the time. But,if it had come out later, in would have been everywhere. Unfortunately, it's a double edge sword to be that. I personally would rather be considered ahead of my time than being everywhere-denoting usually rich and famous. Well, I'd take the riches but not the fame! Lol. I love my anonymity!

@CharacterString
@CharacterString 8 жыл бұрын
The visual story is interesting. 1:24 "I saw her with you..." The girls are competing -- an affair? 2:06 He left. A play on the cliche "husband ran away with a younger woman" -- the wife and mistress are both children. Kimbra is themed in black, a spinster (?), contrasting with the two girls. Yet, a girl sings along 1:57, signaling an association or commonality -- seems like the girl would be Kimbra's younger self, except all three dance together at the end. Playing with dolls, something neither girl does, is a cue for youth and innocence in media, but in reality it an encourages the housewife ideal -- playing house. 0:34 The man is plastic and lifeless -- seems to imply the girls are dolls too. Living out their roles, stiff and mindless. 1:46 most people picked up on the sudden 70's aesthetic -- a time when the gender ideals we know today were strongly being defined. Everything is a little too perfect, contrasting with the story: single mother/broken marriage. The nuclear dream sold to women since they were girls: grow up, get married, have a family -- is a lie, an unfulfilled promise. Told again by the nursery rhyme refrain, "Star Light, Star Bright" the wish tonight? "keep him by side".

@alyzahs
@alyzahs Жыл бұрын
For anyone that's confused, this song is about how girls are taught conform to certain roles like marriage/love, at an early age. Throughout the video, the girl is learning, cooking, cleaning etc(settling), while the man is not doing much of anything (in terms of marriage), for example the scene at the park where the man is still. Showing that the relationship is pretty much as good as a mannequin and mannequins are not really good for anything except display, maintaining an illusion or convincing you to buy into something, when it's not always sunshine and rainbows. The white dress (innocence) and the dolls being burnt shows that the little girls are not left alone to be children and innocent, but instead given roles and values to play etc. Meanwhile, Kimbra is wearing black because she has grown yet still while being influenced by the ideals that society expects from her, she chose to be free from them. There's a lot more to it but hope that gives you some thought, for anyone that did read :)

+Tay♡Bay I agree completely with this interpretation. That's why the video features young girls (the hopes expressed in the song are juvenile) and burning dolls (the death of innocence/childhood as the hopes are fulfilled and outcomes are lacking)

I love Kimbra so much, it's rare to find artists that know how to actually sing, she sounds amazing live or on record. Her creativity is incredible. The girls symbolize how women had to grow up quickly by learning how to cook, and clean etc. to win the "older boy/man" over. Kinda sucks that girls had to go through that back then.. :/ but I love the song

I discovered Kimbra back in 2012 when I had met a nice lad from Hamilton, NZ. He said he knew Kimbra after our music discussions somehow landed on "now you're just somebody that I used to know" and suggested I give her a listen. From there I dove head first into her music and she quickly became one of my favorite artists of all time. I will never understand why she doesn't like Vows. I know it wasn't completely hers or as personal like her other albums but I always wait for the day when I'll hear another album as brilliant as this one. Cheers Kimbra, keep writing your story.

This gave me "I'm not the only one" vibes, where the young girl is trying so hard to be the perfect wife so that he won't go away with the other girl, but he's still not at the table. The powerful thing is that the two girls are faced with one another other at the end, and they realise that they themselves are not the enemy in the situation, but the image of perfect wives and mistresses being a normal thing, and not respecting themselves in letting the guy do whatever he wants and still get away with it - that is the enemy. Therefore; rather than attacking each other, they unite in dance, and the dolls (which represent the whole image and idea of perfect little conforming wives and mistresses, in my idea) start to burn when they come together and the man isn't even a part of the picture by then, because of them being together and respecting each other.
@2DtoSee
@2DtoSee 4 жыл бұрын
I'll also add that the pain in the voice in the lyrics at the empty table part is so powerful for me, in how much she desires for her man to stay and be with her, and has only the "stars so bright" to ask him to stay because that is the only power she has in the situation, and it's so painful
@2DtoSee

I think your interpretation is exactly right. You're a smart cookie. However, it makes me sad, because judging by the lyrics alone I wouldn't have assumed it was more liberal bullshit, but alas, it pervades everything I love. The music video ruined the song for me, but I thought it was beautifully choreographed.
@thevoxdeus
@thevoxdeus 4 жыл бұрын
@@brianstanton8296 Everyone experiences heart break in one way or another. There's nothing political about that. This song and video are from the perspective of a woman, and maybe that woman grew up in a wholesome house with good parents and assumed that if she just followed along with that pattern, she'd find a relationship like that. Maybe she grew up in a broken home and wants the story book domestic life that she never saw growing up. Either way, she found out that life isn't as simple as that and there are a lot of people in the world who won't cherish you the way you want and need to be cherished. It's a sad lesson, but it's a lesson that most people learn the same way. Could have just as easily been a video about a boy or young man who does his best to stand up for the weak, who is honest and humble, and gets walked all over by a girl who just wants the "bad boy."

This video is my absolute childhood. A few months ago I found my small old iPod I had when I was around 4yrs old, and this music video was saved on it. I remember, as a child, listening to her sing repeatedly and watching her dance, I was simply mesmerized & entertained. Obviously; when I was a child, I didn't understand what she was talking about. Although I do remember copying the way that girl's skirt was laid, resting on the ground. I do remember that nostalgic heartthrob whenever I am to watch those dolls burn. Her dancing is also very nostalgic... :) I'm happy.

I do too. My dancing is mostly shoulders, since I dance sitting down and doing other things a lot, and spinning and weird, jerky, just-decided-to-do-this movements. But I guess that's just how white girls dance. I like to say I dance so bad looking because it comes from the 'soul' or whatever you want to call it instead of choreography of any kind. As Eminem would say, you just let yourself go.

By the way, Kimbra in her interview says, that this song she wrote as simply as a joke, reflecting the situation that it's so stupid to be married at the young age, to limit, or bound yourself with relations and especially nuptial knot, so, in this light, the interpretation of Mao Chan looks even better :) Referring to Kimbra itself, I hope, she changed her views drastically about being married and being engaged, I think, not all relations tend to be so pinion and handcuffing. Maybe I even had some small chance to be her husband (dreams :)). Anyway. Kimbra rocks!11!! :)
