I: Philip Two
Y: We’ll see the way the no.1 specialist in the West of Japan shines shoes
I: It looks like you brush your teeth.
Y: It’s really a brand new stuff.
I: I practice, I study, and I stole experts’ techniques.
Y: Good morning. This is Kojiragu-Yanaka. Today I’m in Shibuya. I told you in the program on New Year’s day that I do a program on shoes. Today’s program is its vol.1. Lately the price of leather for shoes gets higher and the work of shoe polishing gains peoples’ attention all over again. Then I heard that a specialist in the West of Japan opened a new store in Shibuya, so pay a visit to experience his service.
S: Wow, everything changed.
Y: Yah, the whole town has changed. Totally changed.
S: Under construction everywhere!
Y: So let’s go there now. This side of town has been totally changed…Wow, Shibuya totally changed…Amazing. Lots of shops were gone. It’s been awhile since I visited this side of town, but when I was younger, I had fun times at ROOMS. This shop is a familiar one for me. UNION WORKS. It’s an old good shop. Repairing my shoes at a traditional brand. Wow, it’s a new room number. It reads “Call 111”, which used to be “001”. UNION WORKS.
Y: Good afternoon. Nice to meet you. I’m Yanaka of Forza Style.
I: Welcome to our shop. This is Iwami.
Y: I know this place just because I’ve been seeing your website. Is this shop located inside UNION WORKS?
I: No, we just succeeded its first shop, which was alive for 22 years.
Y: Succeeded? Wow!
I: We THE WAY THINGS DO does all the operation.
Y: By the way, I heard your Tokyo branch got started in January, 2019…
I: Yes, it was the 7th of January.
Y: So it’s literally a brand new. What does THE WAY THINGS DO offer?
I: Show polishing with cream, which is 1000 Yen, 2800 Yen for one week program, and express polishing on site costs 4000 Yen.
Y: So my shoes on site, please.
I: PHILIP II
Y: Yes. I’ve made up my mind to put a pair of expensive shoes on. I hope you do an outstanding job since I’ll wear them long term.
I: Sure. Thank you.
Y: I’m just wondering if you could show me special techniques of the specialist in the West of Japan
I: These shoes are ordinary ones…
Y: That’s right. You have Rose Gold as inline, also Edward Green-colored Westminster in them, Square tows named 888, I like their sexy, kinda erotic features. So I chose this color deliberately, later on I figured they also offer a silver color just in Japan upon requests… Anyway, my boss also wears the same color.
I: First, I’d take all the dust off.
Y: Just curious…Is this brush your original?
I: Yes, it’s an original one.
Y: Would you recommend house hairs brush for taking the dust off?

It's very much in line with some Japanese apprenticeships actually, in some trades the apprentice sits next to the master and "steals" the techniques by observation.

Your video proved me how prescious and unique Japanese culture is. You make every, even the simplest work interesting! Your craftsmanship in almost every area becomes an art. Your devotion to your jobs, your humble respect for it, your polite attitude towards other people is so beautifully intense! Now I understand that even shoe polishing can be a professional calling and give the sense of fullfilment! It is great that you take pride in every single detail. I respect and admire your culture of work so much. Greetings from Poland :)

@@turbocavalli While your comment is true, I don't particularly think its a bad thing either way. For example, when I spent time in Japan, by the time I was ready to come home the formality of their culture felt confining and very ummm...uncomfortable. You can't express yourself in Japan or speak your mind. Cultures are different, but neither is better or worse than the other. It's just different. Another example...many foreigners say that they don't like Americans because we're loud and that's makes them feel uncomfortable. But we're not being loud to make anyone uncomfortable, we do it because that's our culture.

Crazy, I use to use a very similar technique polishing my combat boots. The biggest difference is the quality of the leather, the quality of the product and the environment the boots got subjected to especially in Western Europe. It would take me at least 40min per boot. I still polish my shoes. I have 4 pairs of boots and every week they would be a mirror finish at the start of every week. 1 pair only required a touch up since they were my "dress" boots.
