I did not know you light fossils Agate, dad. I can send you all you want. I live in grayling Michigan, the Ausble River is actually my backyard I live on the riverRiver is actually my backyard. I live on the river. We find fossils every time we Go for a Walk, including all kinds of Jasper. And of course, aggrets. And of course, agates So when I find some more, I'll send them your way. Love your videos and I have learned a whole lot from your videos.

The one at the beginning that you thought wasn't a Petoskey stone is in fact one. You were looking at it from the side and not the top. The smaller patterened ones were Charlevoix stones. And the long really funky one is horn coral.

Fossil hunters honestly must love this channel. Just having this footage online adds to scientific understanding, even with as little context as there is, by the nature of the medium. The more samples you open up and even glimpse into, the larger the dataset gets. Plus it's gorgeous (looking at the 4:15 mark) every time you open one.

The last one was not a dud, you just need to polish the outside of the rock. The coral that turned into petoskey stones is usually shaped like a dome. I have found some still imbedded in the host rock near Petoskey Michigan, and they all had a dome shape. It is likely that your cut was just below where the coral was attached to the stone.

I live a mile from East Grand Traverse Bay and most of what you have there are Petoskey and Charlevoix stones. Every once in while they have some agate-like characteristics. The cold water agates are a much different looking stone, usually orange, yellow or tan on their husks (from my finds). What I have found with both the Petoskey and Charlevoix stones is some polish up great and others may be such a challenge that I just chuck them. The most rare finds may include Petoskey, Sponge, Horn Coral and/or Charlevoix in one conglomerate type stone. Most of us in my area refer to the black and white (with the crinoids in them) stones or portions as fossil soup.

We live just outside of Petoskey and have been finding cold water agates at the pier in Petoskey. Idk why we are just finding them recently and never before

I've always been fascinated by fossils. My Dad claimed he'd confiscate my body weight in Petoskey stones from me before we went home from a vacation in northern Michigan. I still have a collection of polished and natural Petoskeys of various sizes, some cut into charms.

How to tell a fossil from a pebble is ut due to texture and weight ?
@LauraNickolai-yb8id4 ай бұрын
I was a kid. Petoskeys were easy to find. I could pick them up right from the beach. Other fossils were all imprints of shells and odd bits I could see when held them up close. My search technique was "oh, cool! What's that?"

I know these are found in Michigan. But ive never rock hunted anywhere but Oregon, Washington, California and Idaho. Haven't cut mine open yet but the outside looks the same. It was in a creek bed that dried up eons ago. I was looking for petrified wood. The area didn't appear to have anyone living close by or previously. I dont know. I happy to have one regardless!

I just got a 6" hi-tech yesterday. Sorry to put my comment on a very cool random video but I have questions! What upgrade blades do you recommend and sharpening tool? Thanks!
@paulwells7824 ай бұрын
Yeah it’s a Petosky Stone.
@BradleyBellwether-oy2qi23 күн бұрын
The first one you picked up is a petosky, but you're looking at the cross section. Petosky look way better when you cut them with the hexagonal facing away from the blade. That gives you the look that most people associate with petosky.

Polish the outside for Petoskey stones instead of cutting?
@BradleyBellwether-oy2qi23 күн бұрын
The scratches are because the material is so soft. Some are calcite and others are limestone, and neither have a moh's over 5. But that's also why they polish up so phenomenally. And quickly.

8:08 First was a side view of petoskey stones. Favosites are awesome. Easy to work stones as they are usually a 3 hardness. Some may have cracks that may break. I prefer cutting horn coral cross ways cut. Cladapora is really awesome in dark matrix. Lovin this!
