It blows my mind how Pete can look at a little bone and tell them not only what it is but the Latin name for the animal too.

Was thinking the same thing. That's how good a top paleontologist like Pete can be at recognizing what to nearly anyone else would be an unrecognizable fragment. He spent a lifetime developing that kind of skill, and he gets to use it doing something he loves, the lucky dog.

All three of those finds were really cool. I like that Coyote's had a story behind it, both his and the animal's (with his trip to get it and with the tooth mark from a Hyeanodon), and Mario's was also really cool and really big. In the end, I have to say I personally think that Mark's was the coolest. It was the only confirmed fossil of the day that came from a predator and even cooler, it was from an actual Saber Tooth. Congrats on the amazing find, Mark!

Not all fragments. There need to be certain identifying characteristics to bone/exoskeleton/whatever fragments to get an accurate ID. Some fragments are worn to the point of only being unidentifiable fragments. These are usually dubbed "Chunkosaurus" in the fossil forum i frequent.

It might seem lame to some but this is seriously one of my dreams in life; to go on an actual dig, somewhere as significant as the badlands and find something. It could be anything, I don’t care if it’s little or not as exciting as a t-Rex skull (that would be pretty amazing though!). I’ve wanted to do this since I was a kid and not really had the opportunity since my spine screwed up. But one day! I have to ask, how would someone go about getting on an expedition?

Research local colleges, see if they have paleontology programs or paleontologists who work there. Get in touch with them if so. Also look for local Paleontology groups, join if there are any. They often have field trips and will be able to get you in touch with paleontologists. If you are patient, you can realize this dream. Good luck!

It would be amazing for yall to come to Alberta, Canada. There's so many places, obviously Drumheller but there's also a place 40 mins North of Banff National Park there's a Wolf dog sanctuary that allows you to actually get in and see them. There's also SO MANY DIFFERENT ecosystems in the province. Badlands, wetlands, mountain, forest, prairie, it's honestly amazing. There's so many places to go & see!! Definitely recommend

all three of those finds were really cool. By Ethan Clausen
