Fossil Hunting Plesiosaur Bone Surprise!

We are fossil collecting along the Jurassic Coast today. We are going to look for ammonites and fossil marine reptile bones. One clever lady on my recent fossil walk found a beautiful back bone of an Ichthyosaur, so I’m really in the mood to find more- like Georgina did. I hope you enjoy the geology, palaeontology, fossil wood and more. I’m going fossil hunting along the Jurassic Coast, in November.I’m heading West of Lyme Regis for the low tide and to see the ammonite pavement at Monmouth beach. Some people have said to me there is nothing left on the beaches to find-where have all the fossils gone? It has been “fair weather “fossil hunting in the Summer, there hasn’t been any rough weather around. Now the real Wintery weather is arriving the mudslides will get activated by the rain. The big waves and rough seas will wash fossils out of the mudslides and onto the beaches at low tide! I’d like to find some of the beautiful little pyrite ammonites that wash out along the beach at low tide. Little nuggets of gold delight, saved from the shifting sands. I recommend wearing safety glasses and sturdy rubber gloves when hammering the right little rocks. Remember the cliffs are dangerous and liable to fall suddenly and without warning. Keep away from the dangerous cliffs, the best fossils are washed out onto the beaches at low tide, by the sea's actions. Look out for the slippery seaweed on the ledges and rocks. Thank you 🙏 it was really stormy ⛈️ November weather and the sea washed the fossils out onto the beaches at low tide . I certainly was lucky to have some fossil collecting fun out there . I’ve got a good video called “ Ammonite Lyme Regis,” it shows you how to find the small ammonites beautifully preserved in iron pyrite. Beware of the dangerous cliffs that are liable to fall suddenly and without warning ⚠️

I remember finding one in a plastic bag that someone had left on the beach - the tide revealed it . Then Martin Foster bought it for his collection that ended up in the Cardiff MUSEUM

It’s a nice place to visit at low tide, along the beaches you can see fossils everywhere in the rocks . In summertime it gets almost too busy at times on the beach, and Winter it’s much much quieter
