In this next fossil prep video, I'm prepping the skull (both upper and lower) of a 30 million year old carnivore called Hyaenodon horridus. This comes from the Brule Formation of the White River Group of South Dakota, USA. This time lapse video condenses around 15 hrs of prep work into a few minutes. At the end you'll see both the upper skull and lower jaw mounted onto a custom mild steel mount that I welded specifically for this specimen. I've listed below the tools that I've used for this job for those that are interested. Hope you like the outcome!
If you'd like to watch more of my fossil preparation series, please subscribe and check out this playlist below where I'll be adding more videos most weeks.
FULL FOSSIL PREP PLAYLIST: • Fossil Preparation Series
TOOLS USED IN THIS VIDEO:
Pnuematic air tools (linked to large air compressor operating around 80psi):
Paleotools ME-9100 - Air tool with pointed stylus to remove the bulk matrix from around the skull
Zoic Palaeotech ZPT Microraptor - Lower pressure air tool with fine point for finer detail cleaning
Consolidants:
3-4% Paraloid B72 & acetone - helps penetrate into the smallest of fractures to give the bone strength.
Custom Mount:
Mild Steel mount, MIG welded. Matt Black Plasi-cote spray paint for metal

Im loving how often you're putting out these videos. Ive been waiting for someone to start putting out fossil prep videos more frequently, and im ecstatic that its finally happening with cool fossils like these. Well done!!

Thanks Kenneth. Glad you like these. I've been putting shorter prep videos up on Instagram for years but thought it would be better to have some longer ones available for those more interested in the details. I've got plenty more videos in the works for uploading and will make sure I upload one every 2 weeks - that's the plan anyway! Next up is a massive Yorkshire crocodile bone block - 200 million years old.

Thanks for sharing & what you are doing. I really don't get why those fossile preperation videos don't attract more viewers.

How common would you say these mammal fossils are?
@PalaeoArt
@PalaeoArt 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. Carnivore fossils are much rarer than herbivorous mammals. That’s simply the factor of generally more herbivores than carnivores in any ecosystem. Hyaenodon are very well represented in museums but they are still rarer to find in the field vs Oreodonts or Poebrotherium
