I love this. The home study can feel intense when you are in the middle of it, but once you are done, you can look back and see it wasn’t that big of a deal. There can definitely be some interesting requests-like you need to have certain vaccinations or tests done-but in the end, it ends up being nothing. I can relate it a little bit to the prenatal visits…once you are connected to your kiddo, you forget about the discomfort.

Thank you so much for making this! It’s very helpful. Will one spouse being unemployed stop them from saying yes during a home study? I have chronic nerve pain and have not had a job since shortly before my husband and I got married (10+ years ago) mainly because we don’t need 2 incomes and i always knew when we adopted that I’d be a stay-at-home Mom. I live with my mom and don't work. I do get survivor benefits or Social Security. Will that disqualify me from adopting? I don't have bills to pay so living off of survivor benefits won't be an issue

You are welcome! It can vary state to state, but typically you will still have to go through the foster care licensing process. The difference is that you already know what child you are planning to foster or adopt! You can reach out to your county's children's services and they should be able to share the requirements with you for where you live :)

Great information, how long did the process take from applying to become a foster parent to getting approved ? Can you be in a rental or do you have to own a home?

You can be in a rental! As for timeline, it can vary a lot depending on your agency and when they offer their classes. 3-4 months is about average with a private agency, but sometimes going through the state can take longer. Thanks for watching! :)

Yes, that would most likely be your home safety check and possibly the interview portion of the home study. I hope it goes well! :)

Does anyone know what the typical room size requirements are, and if you can have more than one child in a room?

I'm not sure when it comes to room size, but I know you will need to have an egress of some sort for fire safety! You can usually allow children of the same gender to share rooms! If the children are under the age of 5, you can sometimes have a boy and girl share a room. Hope that helps! :)

What if i dont have any friends and i just moved to a new state lol how do i do the recommendations

That is definitely tough!! I would personally give yourself some time to adjust to your new living environment and meet some people before jumping into adopting. Even if you give yourself like 6 months to a year it could help a lot! Adoption is already such a challenging transition that I don’t recommend doing more than one adjustment at a time. However, you can probably also meet some other adoptive parents through your trainings/support groups which could be a good way to build community:)

Does anyone know how long you have to have had your job before being qualified financially? I was out of work because of covid from March 2020- Dec 2022

That probably varies state to state, but I think as long as you have income now where you can care for the child you will most likely be fine. Just explain that upfront to your county/agency before you get started.
