In this video I go over some of the basics of a Talon MTRS (Military Tracked Robotic System) with infrared night vision.
Specifications:
TALON is a lightweight, unmanned, tracked robot designed and built to remotely operate in harsh, dangerous or other hazardous locations. It can be used to inspect and manipulate objects in hazardous or tight confines.
The TALON robot system features modular design incorporating a broad array of sensor packages that can be attached to the robot. It is quick, durable and easy to use. The robot has a high payload-to-weight ratio and can be deployed in all environmental and terrain conditions.
The robot measures 34 inches long, 32 inches wide and 11 inches high when the arm is in the stowed position. It can carry a payload of 100lbs on the chassis, drag up to 200lbs with the gripper arm, a tow capacity of 700lbs and a maximum arm lift capacity of 25-30 lbs.
TALON features a disruptor-ready manipulator arm, 360° rotating wrist, gripper, microphone. It is equipped with intuitive joystick controls for the arm. The lower arm can move 180 degrees and 270 degrees on the upper arm.
The robot can be configured with a number of optional sensors to detect gas, chemical, radiation and temperature in HAZMAT duties. It can also be fitted with a heavy-duty rotating shoulder, longer reach for heavy lift operations and a range of weapons for special weapons observation reconnaissance detection system (SWORDS) duties available from the manufacturer.
Additionally a GPS compass, two isolated firing circuits, RE12-12 disrupter mount, portable X-ray mount, recoilless PAN disrupter mount, shotgun mount, wire cutting tool, heavy-duty tracks and sprockets can be installed.
The TALON tracked robot is controlled by a water-resistant operator control unit (OCU) through a two-way radio or fibre-optic cable link. The OCU features a quad screen display. It can be optionally powered by rechargeable BB-2590 lithium ion, BB-390B/U and non-rechargeable Alkaline batteries.
OCU:
The OCU (Operator Control Unit) is 19 inches long, 16 inches wide and 9inches high. It uses digital / analogue line-of-sight (LOS) propagation to transmit / receive radio signals in a range up to 800m. The data can also be transmitted or received using fibre optic communications within a range of 300m.
Sensors and Communications:
This TALON robot has four cameras to provide a comprehensive view around the robot to identify and move suspicious objects from a safe distance.
The robot features three fixed-focus infrared illuminated night vision capable cameras mounted on the gripper, elbow, and rear the robot. The fourth camera is mounted on a mast that can remotely raised and lowered featuring pan, tilt and zoom with an LED light for night or low light operations.
The robot is equipped with one-way audio transmission (microphone on the robot arm) with an option for two-way audio transmission. It uses USB and Ethernet communication ports and two RS 232 serial ports to control optional payloads.
TALON robot performance
The robot is powered by six standard BB-2590/U batteries with up to an 8 hour run time. It can run on just two but run time will be shorter. It also has a battery hot swap feature that allows you to swap batteries without shutting the robot off.
The robot has a maximum speed of 4-5mph. It can climb stairs up to 43°, negotiate side slopes of 45°. With 3 inches of ground clearance and rugged tracks it can navigate through rubble, snow, puddles, and rocks.

Where are batteries available? The surplus robots seem to not come with any batteries.

I bought a pair of these and they have been the bane of my existence. They didn’t come with the battery tray so I had to backtrack the 16 pin battery plug and I figured out there’s 4 positive, 4 negative and 2 other wires that I have no clue what type signal they output but it’s what turns the electronics “on”. You seem like u know a lot about them. If you can help me get it running I will pay you. Seriously.

There’s three types of battery’s that will power them. The original Talon battery pack, or one of the two 2590 tray types. I’ve never looked at the actual output but I do know the trays do the following. The three batteries on each side are combined in series. Then the two sides are wired in parallel. I do not know the pinouts for the battery to the chassis. All the pinouts are the same across the battery types since they have to be universal for the chassis.

Have our connected the fiber optic reel assembly? I am interested in getting the speaker function on the robot working which is incorporated into the reel assembly. I have attached the reel assembly and connected its cable but there is no audio output when the PTT switched is pressed on the OCU.

I have the manual but it has a security code that has to be verified every time it’s opened. I had called the company that bought out foster miller and they were nice, the guy sent me the field manual for my specific serial number on my robot. They don’t have any details of any of the internal components, unfortunately
