So much history. I am American, with Scottish & English ancestry. I have located family in Birmingham. I cannot WAIT to make my way to the UK. I am obsessed with history. My dream is to see these historic sites. One day! 🇺🇲❤🇬🇧

I remember going here before covid, I'm sure looking closely I saw the occasional bit of stone on the motte's surface that looked just like that of the surviving part. I also remember how difficult it was to find parking ;) .Great video

Thanks for the comment! Yeah there is a small amount of stone ontop of the Motte, but the only real remaining part is near the river. (Which is a huge shame!) I agree with you about parking, but it’s a really lovely village!

A very good film about one of England's most important,yet largely unknown sites.Sad as the relative absence of tangible remains is, there is a certain poignancy in the undisturbed nature of the location.

It is so sad that even these huge stone castles eventually are no more, or in serious ruin. It just shows how much nothing lasts forever… that’s the great reason our preservation of all things historical is so important.What a marvelous place it must have been!

Really quite interesting stuff! I hope to visit there one day. I recently learned my 2nd Great-Grandfather, and the few generations before him, lived in Fotheringhay before immigrating to the states, and his relatives and are buried at the church there.

I was under the impression that James I (VI of Scotland) had the castle torn down, I suppose to cleanse the site of his mother’s execution. Understandable at the time, but disappointing for us today. I don’t think this was mentioned in the video? As Northamptonshire born and bred I did not know of its Yorkist connection which was very interesting.

Selsey/Pagham, West Sussex was the site of an early Norman castle. The earth works still remain just by Church Norton. Close by is the site of RAF Selsey, a temporary airfield from where Spitfires shot down the first Luftwaffe aircraft on D Day. If only I had known this when I was a kid.

The church used to be 3 times as big as well. There's a model of it inside the church, it was roughly twice as long and also had the college buildings beside it

That brought back some old memories! As a kid I lived nearby in a small village called Warmington ( no, not 'On-Sea' as in Dad's Army! Lol). We used to walk our dog here and I vividly recall being chased by a bull because of our dog being a little pest and we all had to run up to the top of the Motte ( while my dad had the unenviable job of scooping up the dog and making a run for the car!). We used to ride our bikes the few miles there also and play " Saxons V Normans " haha, that was thirty years ago! Bloody hell where did that go?! Scary! I think I'll take my two daughters over there actually, my family and I live in Northampton now and I'd all but forgotten about Fotheringhay and these old memories, so thanks for the inspiration! Love your channel not long discovered it but that's ok as I now binge watch whenever I get to slip away said still Xmas powered excited two and seven year olds! My eldest daughter is showing interest in history now ( particularly the more gruesome! Lol typical!) So a trip out here should be great. We recently visited Rockingham Castle in Corby ( if you get the chance to have a walk around there and make a video that would be epic! I'd love to hear your commentary and insight on that!) I was lucky enough ( if you can say living in Corby was lucky! - sorry Corbyites but you know!) To live nearby this castle too for about a decade as a kid also, had great summer holidays poking about and I recall getting chased off from the grounds! Such a lot of history in this area and the whole country,we're lucky. Look forward to your next upload, thanks so much!

Elizabeth wasn’t Mary’s close friend.. they were cousins. Which is why Elizabeth was so quick to turn her back on Mary, because she was an heir to the English throne and that made her a threat. Mary’s grandmother was a Tutor. Henry the 8ths sister Margaret, was Mary’s grandmother.
