Simple Fix: The three base and OF umpires by seniority/ whatever metrics MLB and Union want. Home plate is three man rotation with #1 rated ump working games 1, 4, and 7. #2 works games 3 and 6. Third best ump works games 2 and 5. Older umpires get to have their legacy and be on the field for WS but only the three best umps in the games should work the plate.

If I may provide insight. There are requirements for umpires to be eligible to work the World Series. First off, the majority of the umpires are call ups or young guys that just got hired. They have to work an LCS before they can work the WS, so like Kratz said the majority of the top 20 are ineligible this year. Second, Maybin is right that the league could've selected better guys but some of the best worked the WS last year or the year before. The league goes 3 years between assignments typically, with the exception of Alfonso Marquez last year. Third, umpire auditor is an unreliable source. His whole purpose is to make umpires look terrible so those rankings, take with a grain of salt because by no means are those rankings official. Fourth, yes there is some favoritism in assigning these big games, but there is A LOT that goes into play besides plate accuracy. Replay numbers matter, situation handling matters, among many other things. This is not a bad crew, a very veteran crew in the biggest series this century. Mark Carlson is a top 5 crew chief, great situation handler, calm cool and collected. Five, Maybin come on man, that was a decade ago! Fletcher has improved overall the last 5 years I can promise you that. Yes he's not an elite plate umpire but he was an acting CC all season and did a fantastic job. Sometimes simply working hard and continuing to put in the effort will reward you. Lastly look at how these guys performed in the DS behind the plate. Torres didn't work a plate but the other 6 did and they all nailed their assignments. The thing with Torres however is the league is emphasizing minority umpires working the big game every year, it's been a point of emphasis since 2017. Torres had a great regular season but his postseason was not strong and he should've been left of the WS roster plain and simple especially after last night. MLB should've gone with Cory Blaser or even Adam Hamari who actually worked plates in the DS this year, though Blaser was way better in his assignment than Hamari

I've hated umps since I was a kid. They've ALWAYS been a problem. Huge egos and corruptability. They need to get these guys out of there. I don't care about tradition. I care far more about integrity of the game. Especially now that there is high stakes gambling involved. We have the technology to call the game electronically, with far higher reliability...I'm not watching this Series. I wish Ohtani the best, but I just don't care. Because I know that at some point in this series, just as happens all year long with these guys, there will be one of these mediocre umps putting their thumb on the scale and twisting a game. Why? Because they can...

This is gonna be the most watched WS ever. This will force the umpire union's hand to agree to the automated strike zone if the ump's have bad games. The public outcry will be overwhelming.
